@BinaryBlueBull Жыл бұрын
I disagree that the C-class has a top tier interior. It used to have that, indeed, but the last few models has seen a dramatic drop in quality. It's all cheap plastics, creaks and rattles. These days you have to step up to the E-class to get on the same level as what BMW is providing in the 3-series. And this is coming from an (ex) Mercedes-fanboy. I think it's a disgrace, the quality they provide on such an expensive car as the C-class. This is of course only my personal opinion, though I've heard it repeated often, but the interior quality on the base 3-series and the base C-class are incomparable, they don't even play in the same league, which is a shame because Mercedes' interiors do look amazing, more so than BMW I think, they're just very cheaply made on anything under an E-class (or a C-class AMG top model and trim perhaps)
@MrAuell Жыл бұрын
@@BinaryBlueBull I agree that the C-Class interior is cheaper. I recently tested the MB and the BMW, and I bought the BMW. My old car is a C-Class. I don't like the huge Tesla-like display that takes up most of the dashboard. I would only but E class and above now. They retain the quality I expect from MB.
@BinaryBlueBull Жыл бұрын
@@MrAuell This is precisely my opinion as well. I have tested equivalent models of both of them and the dramatic quality difference is undeniable on the new models. If someone doesn't see that, he or she is blinded by brand prestige and not objective. I also don't like those huge screens, especially not because more and more brands, including BMW now too, have done away with all climate control buttons and it's now all touchscreen. I really don't like that. At least Audi still retains physical buttons, for now. If I had to buy MB, it would have to be E-class or higher. For BMW I can go one model lower (3-series) and get a higher interior quality than C-class

Great review as usual Alex. I owned a 2010 3series and loved it. However, after a few rattles, lack of ventilated seats (personally my biggest gripe, but then that was not available on most luxury cars in this category), run flat tires which are on the firm side and their resulting expense, the over-alI cost of ownership after the expiration of the warrantee. Example, the cost of a 12volt battery was over $400 at the time and then my battery installer had to call BMW to reset everything on a Saturday evening when the dealerships were closed, I switch to the Lexus and have never looked back. You just said " the benchmark does not have to be the best in every thing..." well, Lexus was good at most for me, including said ventilated seats, excellent standard safety features, comfortable and smooth ride, and higher resale value. To me, lack of reliability translates to lack of quality and although I did not have any major problems with my 3series I would never buy a car just based on so-called "innovation" especially when that car technological wise, is not really giving anything more when comparing apples to apples in practical everyday livability usage.

@Mark-de4hj Жыл бұрын
@@shawnx7806 I personally did not find anything that was "cutting edge" on the BMW when compared to the Lexus. Although I wanted a small luxury second car I also shopped their upper level trims to find what I wanted and even then could not find ventilated seats or intuitive controls. Handling was good and the ride was firmer, (rougher) than I liked, but I enjoyed the sportiness of the suspension overall though.
@shawnx7806 Жыл бұрын
@@Mark-de4hj I think the term cutting edge prob is too exaggerating, but I was referring to things like the zf-8 speed (mechanical), the new idrive-8 (infotainment), the dynamic adjustments (suspension, steering, throttle response) of the drive modes (performance), as far as I know Lexus was kind of held back on those categories, other than I know the IS RWD has a pretty good transmission.
@Mark-de4hj Жыл бұрын
@shawnx7806 That assessment would be incorrect. Lexus does not use the name "Idrive" for it's infotainment system, and each brand has their own term, but they do provide on-the-fly suspension adjustment capability and handling on some of their vehicles. Bottom line, feature for feature Lexus provided more usable options for the money. I used the term usability because we get duped into believing fancy names for the same components translates into a better product, but it doesn't. At the end of the day, we all can make choices as to what fits our needs. I consider myself smart enough to ignore the hype, but I absolutely believe we should always buy what we love.

I honestly think the 330i was the superior vehicle to the IS 350 in most respects. The ways in which is wasn't superior probably don't matter to most shoppers of vehicles in this category - styling, better-bolstered seats, a naturally-aspirated V-6 instead of a turbo I-4, and the promise of dependability. The 330i simply feels more modern all-around. However, I agree with Alex that the IS 350 is the one I'd rather throw around on a back road. Even though the 330i feels lighter, it also feels more distant and vague, and the fake engine sound that can't be defeated is a real bummer. However, on day-to-day journeys, the 330i feels effortless and agile, making it arguably the better daily driver. Of course, the IS 500 is a different story. Having the V-8 means it, too, feels effortless around-town, while having about 10 times the character of either the IS 350 or the 330i and more straight-line pulling power. It's not really a fair comparison. I've never driven an M340i, so it would be interesting to see how it compares with an IS 500.

@naveenthemachine Sadly, I never would've considered the M340i. It doesn't have a V-8, and I've heard the steering is not very connected. But I'm sure it's a fantastic automobile.

@@layne4376 What's that? I can't hear you over the piped-in digital engine noise. Maybe I'll just go back to listening to my V-8. Besides, for me, I specifically wanted the IS 500. The M340i does not matter at all.
@Bravo1VE Жыл бұрын
Even though I love the IS500 and have even auto crossed it, the interior honestly feels older in it than even the outgoing 3 series interior. The V8 does sound awesome but also the fuel economy is equally horrible, so better really want that sound. The M340i is a beast especially in AWD form, but as far as a long term investment, I think the IS500 may be one of those rare gems. It's the last of the V8 era in a highly reliable package. It is entirely possible for the IS500 to appreciate over time if the mileage is kept low.

I think this reviewer has eloquently expressed the reasons I bought the BMW 330iX over the competition. For me it wasn't close. I found that the Mercedes was a disappointment in the C-Class for me and doesn't seem to have the luxury OR the sport that the 3 series has. I don't find too much road noise in mine. Maybe I'm going deaf! The factory tires in my 330iXDrive model are not as smooth as I would like, and I'm not a fan of run flat tires. I might buy a spare and go to a higher quality tire (not run flat) when it is time. I think the base sound system is very good for a base level system. It doesn't compare to the premium systems on any of the cars that I drove that had that, but for base level, it's great. The front seats have enough room for me and I'm a very large man (6'2" and well-padded). I don't feel cramped at all. I don't care too much about rear seat room because our medium sized pooch is the usual passenger. When my wife and sister rode back there recently on a short excursion they were quite comfortable but they are both around 5'3". My last sport sedan that I purchased is a MB C-Class and I loved it but it is old and retired. I may use it for a winter car. We have a Jeep but my wife likes to drive it all the time.

I test drove a 2021 BMW the other day (I own a 2011 328xi) and I was quite disappointed with the hard noise the doors make when you shut them. In a luxury brand, I expect the door to do a low "thump" noise. Even my daughter which is clearly not a car enthusiast noticed it. She thought she slammed the door too hard but after a few gentle tries it was doing the same hard noise. On another front, I thought the front seat would give me a bit more headroom (I am 6 feet) after a few generation after my current BMW but I have to push the seat almost all the way down otherwise my hair brushes the ceiling. I don't know if the A4 is the same.
@MrScalius Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explanation. You make a point there. I would think though being a luxury car that a talented engineer would find a way to to smooth this. I shut the door several times by applying less force at each attempt but it was making the same metal to metal hard noise. Maybe rubber placed at strategic places would make the job. Or maybe BMW could ask the engineer that designed my toilet cover that silently closes down or Ikea for their silent drawer/door system. Lol

Totally disagree, the BMW’s styling is not better than an IS. I do agree Lexus has sacrificed innovation for lower maintenance costs, but I’m okay with fewer trips to the dealer and needing a courtesy car. (Bimmer, Audi, and Mercedes.) And the IS is most definitely a luxury car.

The exterior styling is simply so Toyota. And though it's very nice to have a wide display like this, this looks so awkward. Jacked up on the dash like it's an add-on bought from an aftermarket accessory shop. From the look on the entire interior and exterior styling, I can't see how it can be a benchmark for any proper car. This is definitely made for people who buy a BMW because simply 'I want BMW'
@naveenthemachine Жыл бұрын
Wrong. As Alex said the 3 series is the Honda accord of the segment There’s nothing where it falls apart in. The exterior is handsome not as say the gulia or s60 but it’s more attractive than average. Much more attractive than Lexus. The cabin is luxurious again not THE best but it’s better than some (Lexus) The tech is really good for the class, legroom headroom are decent, trunks a good size, it’ll age very well, and the driving experience is one of the best while still being very comfortable quiet refined and just easy to live with all for a good value with above average reliability

It was a sad day for BMW fans around the world. The company had decided to fire all of their car desingers, who had worked tirelessly to make their cars some of the most iconic in the world. But instead of hiring new talent, BMW management made a shocking decision: they would copy the lines of a Lexus IS, a car that had already been on the market for years. The new BMW cars were cheap imitations of the Lexus, with none of the innovation or style that had made BMW a household name. Fans were outraged, and sales plummeted. The once-great company was now a shadow of its former self, struggling to stay afloat in a sea of mediocrity. The desingers who had once poured their hearts and souls into creating some of the most beautiful cars in the world were now out of work, replaced by a team of copycats. The saddest part of all was that the new BMWs were not even good copies. The lines were clumsy, the materials were cheap, and the cars were prone to breaking down. As the years went by, BMW became a cautionary tale of what can happen when you abandon creativity and innovation in favor of imitation. The company that had once been a symbol of excellence was now a joke, and no one wanted to buy their cars annymore. It was a sad end to a once-great legacy, but the lesson was clear: never abandon the unique voice that made you great in the first place.

Lexus IS should not be in the comparison. People buying cars from this segment would rank the hike of algeneline as their top priority. If people want a car that's reliable and has good longevity, they can pay 1/3 of the price of an IS to buy a Corolla or Camry, and they perform the same.
