I'd buy the Mazda. My wife's 2012 Honda Civic has needed a new transmission, an air conditioning compressor, a radiator and a starter. Would never buy a Honda again. My 2013 Mazda 2 has run flawlessly.

Well some people will claim that it gets a harsher ride, which may be true depending on the particular vehicle. That said, Mazda switched from a multi-link rear suspension to a torsion beam rear suspension, which is the older style, because they found that in a car that small there's not a lot of benefit to the multi-link set up. Additionally, it limits what you can do in the rear end of a car that size.

Consumer reports says the Mazda is actually more reliable than the Civic, and given the well known issues reported with the civic (engine oil contamination) it makes sense. Plus I think CR is far more reliable than JD Powers. CR is a nonprofit that is not affiliated with any manufacturer, whereas JD gets all of its money from the very manufacturers it is evaluating. No possibility of bias there right?
@captainjack6890
@captainjack6890 Жыл бұрын
The same CR that ranked BMW as 3rd most reliable? That CR? Here's the thing, if I was shopping in this segment it would come down to these two. They are miles above the others. The Mazda is more luxurious and looks better, the Honda more practical and more efficient. In terms of reliability and resale, I would lean towards the Honda, based on my experience with them for over 10yrs now. But thats not to say the new Mazdas aren't reliable, but they have to be tested in the fire of time.

I am a CR subscriber, and I have issues with how they rank things. I do believe Mazda is better than Honda at the moment, but they're very VERY close. CR STILL doesn't really consider long term reliability based on previous models, mostly only new reviews. They only get info from users. For example, I had a 2014 Nissan Rogue that had 0 issues whatsoever, but I know lots of people who's had tons of problems with theirs. I was the only one to upload their experience to CR, and now the 2014 Rogue is considered to be extremely reliable, and it may only be because of my car, before I submitted they had no data. So take CR with a grain of salt. The more paid subscribers sharing their experiences the better.

@@jldkrank I believe they take input from more than just one person. Had a 2016 Maz 3 Hatch. When I test drove the 2020 Maz 3 for a trade, I rejected the vague Torsion Beam Suspension instantly. The look of the car is splendid, with an equally pleasing interior. BUT, we are surrounded by our Mojave Mountains and it's ALL ABOUT HANDLING around here. Instead, we bought the last one of the new Gen X Civics, which handled far more briskly (Independent Rear Suspension)with great road/driver communication, for our Daily driver. We love it and the 35mpg AVR out of our 1.5T is excellent. Best of all, not a single problem in 55k miles!

A lot of people don't know much about this topic but you also have to mention that the automatic civics only come with a cvt. The Si and Type-R are only manual while the Mazda 3 sedan and hatch do not have cvts in any trim. Mazda's come equipped with a 6 speed manual or 6 speed automatic. That is very important when talking about reliability, although cvts have better gas mileage, they do not last long and are expensive to maintain/repair. I would pick mazda not only because I avoid cvts like the plague but Mazda does a beautiful job with their designs.

I have a 2021 Mazda 3 hatch, one step up from base (no leather or moonroof) with AWD (we live in Northern MI) and it seems like a bargain. Under 26k but AWD, auto cruise control, a great stereo, and everything else I could want. It’s fantastic in the snow, as well. That said, I do give Honda credit for making the manual available in multiple trim levels while Mazda only offers it on a loaded HB with FWD.

Pointless observation by all the Honda fanboys. I'm a previous 2003 Honda Accord EX-V6 owner, too. So, I’m coming from a place of eleven years of owning a Honda. I owned it till 2014. It was a great car-dependable, alright but not exceptional. Honda is down a few notches of the reliability roster lately. Mazda is second to Toyota. It's pathetic that consumers don’t do substantial research and make decisions based on some observations done years ago. The only reason Honda looks a little better these days is all thanks to Mazda. Mazda has showed mainstream car brands that just because a car is built at a price point doesn’t mean that it must look like a bland and an uninspiring shit-box. MAZDA ALL DAY FOR ME. Mazda is the only brand that breaks away from the pack to do what they’re enthusiastic in creating. A car is not just about touchscreens. Bland and uninspiring consumers will always move in herds towards what the easy choice is. There will never be changes there. But consumers who like a little bit of thrill will gravitate towards vehicles that are created to give the thrills. I can boldly say that Mazda is the only company right now that has been able to crack that fine balance of dependability, exterior and interior designs, and an array of intricate and exceptional engineering.

I'll stick with Honda because they actually stand by their product on trade in. I was a Mazda owner / leasee (Protege 5 lease, Mazda 3 purchase and Mazda 5 lease) 1st one was ok; owning never again because they start to fall apart after 5 years; then Mazda scammed me on the last lease, they charged me $1,100 for a few scratches / dents even after I had paid for the lease insurance! Whereas my first 2018 Civic LX lease, Honda called me BEFORE the lease was up. I was running a spare, all the tires were bald, desperately needed brakes and it had a few scratches and dents and they didn't charge me a dime! They got me into a 2020 Civic Touring and loved it so much that when they called me BEFORE the lease ended again back in June 2023, I signed for the new 2023 Civic Touring as they gave me $9,200 off the list price because my 2020 only had 38,000km and was basically still brand new (needed tires and brakes again, but no scratches or dents). $0 down and my new lease payments are the same! Honda keeps earning my business even though they already did on the first lease!

I went back on forth between these two many times on my most recent car purchase. The pro and con list weighed almost equal. I found a dealership for each willing to meet me well below MSRP as of November 2023.. I guess they wanted to move their lot for the winter.. so I got equal OTD offers on each and it was a TOUGH choice. The mazda almosttttt had me with the more luxurious interior ( despite the pleather ) and bells and whistles - but ultimately the Honda just spoke to my style more. The Mazdas body has some curves and angles that just don’t do it for me. I also preferred the handling on the civic. The Mazda’s steering was a bit tight and heavy for my driving style. The backseat was also tiny ( although doable ). The civics sound system is very disappointing ( in the EX anyway) - but ultimately that didn’t seem like a big enough deal break or make for me.. I’ll just have to upgrade.

I try to buy the best, take care of it and get as much out of it as I can. It came down to the honda and mazda. Like you I got a civic. Sport touring. April 22 msrp+ 2k for add ons but no mark up. 18 months 15000 miles. No problems No regrets and certainly no post buyers remorse. In fact I am happier today than the day I brought it home. Absolutely convinced I unequivocally made the best choice I could. Good luck and happy motoring.

In Puerto Rico the honda sport is in $34,000 and the mazda 3 premium is on $30,000. So the honda sports have a 7 inch infotaiment screen and a 2.0 n/a 158 hp, cvt transmision vs mazda 2.5 n/a 191 hp, conventional automatic transmision and the 8.8 inch infotaiment screen. I think theres an obvious winner. However I will test drive both to see which one I buy.

Excellent review. I will call BS on the quality rankings. JD Power is a marketing firm disguised as an unbiased quality ranking firm. Do not believe any of their rankings, they take huge sums of money from all auto makers The biggest donors win each year. Do not believe me? do your own research and also consider they routinely rank Chrysler products with awards. Mazda has teamed up Toyota in recent years and Mazda quality across their line is second only to Toyota. Honda is a nice 3rd place but continue to have issues with oil dilution and trans problems. Mazda is your better bet for reliability in this comparison, but I will admit we are splitting hairs. Both very good

base engine comparison: so civic has 180 hp but goes 0-60 in about 7.5 seconds but mazda even with 191 hp goes 0-60 in similar 7.5 seconds? all the while civic has better mpg according to this video so is mazda's engine in base model poorly designed or something? @@akgonen60DO NOT buy the Mazda 3. The 2.5L aspired engine is horrible and lazy and thirsty for such a large capacity engine. Worst it doesn't go fast either. You 'll hate it everyday in this Mazda 3. Woeful engine with a lazy automatic gearbox. Just lousy gearbox which doesn't know which gear it should be in. When look can be a deception and in this case, it is a deception! It is very lazy, whinning as it tries to shift gears and when you look up, the much heavier 1.5L Honda CRV is already 2 body lengths ahead of you😢. I see some dudes here keep commenting on the CVT but this Mazda 3 is the most offensive as it sounds like a cheap rent with the whinning and dronning gearbox😢. Thanks to the genius Mazda engineers I want to swap for the CVT😢. I don't own the turbo version but it s the same genetic. The Mazda 3 is basically let down by the self shift gearbox whether you choose turbo or none turbo. Rolling speed is fine with meaty power but lazy at idle and no top end power either even it hits the red line so quick. If you are happy with the premium interior and good handling, corner grip and communicative steering wheel then this car can offer you those. But you ll get embarrassed most times as you ll need to keep the rev so high to keep up with an old lady in the SUV at traffic lights😂😂😂😂
