For my 2020 hatch if I put it in manual mode and floor it but not hit the button at the bottom of the pedal it wont upshift for me. It will stay at whatever gear and hit rev limiter. I really don’t understand the hate in these comments. For the price of this car and the segment it’s in you get a lot. So much nicer and more powerful than any civic or Corolla aside from the gr but that’s 15k more expensive. You have Hyundai and their N cars which have more performance but look like hot wheel kid racer cars. It’s cool if you’re 18 but not for everyone. This Mazda has the best style in its price range while also giving you a bit of performance. You smack an Audi badge on this car and for CAD 38k people would be saying it’s the bargain of the century.

Couple of points: first, you can't get the Mazda3 sedan with a manual. It's only available in one trim, the premium hatchback with the naturally aspirated motor. I was actually seriously looking at one a few months ago. Second, good luck trying to get a GR Corolla or a Civic Type R at MSRP. With allocations so low and demand so high for those, most dealers are tacking on outrageous ADM which prices those right out of this category. All that being said, I've got a deposit down on a Mazda3 hatch turbo premium plus that I found in transit to a dealer. Got it for under MSRP (only $750 under, but better than nothing and I would never pay above sticker for any vehicle). While I prefer a manual, the wife can't drive stick, and she needs to be able to drive this should the need arise. Rear seat room is a non-issue as it's just the two of us, and I'm looking for something with a bit more comfort and daily driveability to replace the modded Fiesta ST I picked up a couple of months ago which, while great fun to drive, I find tiresome on a day to day basis. And I've still got a 2022 Camaro 2SS 1LE, with a manual, for nice weather, weekend fun drives (which may also explain why the tighter cockpit of the Mazda3 appeals to me!).

I find it perfect for my needs and I prefer the look over the hatch. The car looks great in Platinum Quartz. I do wish the Preferred pkg. provided the gloss black trim instead of chrome and also the black wheels and mirrors. It sets off the body color much better. I find most videos on this car funny in trying to find this into a hot compact, which it isn't. If that's what your looking for don't buy this car. I have an '01 3 liter BMW Z3 for that. Finding a mazda3 gt like new for under 30k is very easy, finding a civic type R as new under 50k + is very difficult. I’m not sure I agree with you that because there are other cars that each do something better than the 3, the 3 is a bad purchase. The Civic Type R and GR Corolla are great hot hatches but have sporty interiors and are manual only, which rules them out for the vast majority of customers. The Civic hatch is more fuel efficient but has a worse interior and less power. The premium trim NA 3 has less power. The Integra doesn’t have AWD but does have a CVT. The A2/A Class are more expensive. Instead of focusing on cars that beat the turbo 3 on individual aspects, I think we might benefit from investigating whether another car can match or exceed the holistic package of the turbo 3 at its price point. In my view it’s a premium compact car at a discount available in either hatch or sedan.

Something I never see anyone mention in reviews of the hatch is, you cannot fold the rear seats unless the person infront is like 5'0 in height. I'm small at 5'5 in boots and with the driver seat in a comfortable position for me I can not fold the rear seat from its upward position without moving the seat forward, and with a power seat it is a minor ordeal not just a quick handle to grab and yank. You gotta wait, fold the seat, then either hit memory so it moves back automatically or move it back yourself. Its because of the rear headrests, which do not appear removable. Repeat process for when you want to lift the rear seats back up, because the headrest gets jammed into the back of the seat infront unless you move it again. 22 Turbo hatch owner.
