His ability was obviously levels above them all, but his pacing must have been a huge advantage, it's totally insane going out in 1.00.30 as a 2.05 runner and expecting not to suffer through the 2nd half, Kiptum was running at practically threshold for the first half then starting the 2nd ready for a straight half marathon race, what's unbelievable though is that he could open in 60.45 and then effortlessly glide through the 2nd half well under an hour, something no other athlete has ever even dreamt of - really makes you wonder what he was capable of but I think sub 2 was in his reach for sure

I first ran the Berlin Marathon in 1984. Around 7,297 finishers, a printed program booklet and a printed certificate in the mail. A few Deutschmarks entry fee. Moving to 2024. 205 Euros entry and 50,000 runners = EUR10,250,000. I sincerely hope that a little bit of money was left over for the organizer after the race, given that there were also quite a few sponsors. Races like these are now really only affordable to hip surgeons and lawyers and not running enthusiasts like myself.

Sure as hell isn’t even close now but he’s still like 23; I’m sure in 10 years he’ll leave the 1500 and 5k behind and become a HM/Marathon runner Both Kenenisa Bekele and Eliud Kipchoge were phenomenal 1500 and 5k runners at the beginning of their career so obviously it’s possible
@joelmacinnes2391Ай бұрын
@theperfecteraser5988 but neither Kipchoge or Bekele is the best marathon runner to date, by the look of it, the earlier you get into it the better, but to even suggest that he might break it is just totally disrespecting Kiptum's legacy, never mind Bekele, Kipchoge, Lemma and others who have devoted years and years of their lives to training specifically for the distance - sure he could be good, but he isn't touching these guys

Marathon is finished.... Rip Kelvin and good retirement for Kipchoge
@Stellar-CowboyАй бұрын
Disagree. Kiptum wasn’t a WR challenger until 2022, and then he beats the WR the next year. It’s very much possible that we see a rising talent in the next years become a WR challenger 1-2 seasons after. The marathon has never brought more people. It’s more popular than ever and the technology is growing fast. Assuming the distance is finished is just moronic.
@joelmacinnes2391Ай бұрын
@@Stellar-Cowboybut before Kiptum, Kipchoge and Bekele had been going strong for a decade, Kiptum came along and seemingly carried on the torch from Kipchoge and then he died suddenly while the other two have reached retirement, we're not gonna see anyone push these guys records for a while, at the moment Lemma, Kipruto and Tola are by far the best on the scene and they can't even open at world record tempo while running huge positive splits - a guy like Kiptum only comes around once in a generation at best, plus he wasn't exactly anonymous, he had run several 58.xx half marathons already and as a big negative split runner with that level of endurance, he was made for the marathon
@nichokituku4799Ай бұрын
@@joelmacinnes2391 I completely agree. There is a gap. Kipchoge was marathon king... Unbeatable and unbelievable consistency. We all knew age will catch up with him.. and we hoped to get another unique talent then just on time Kelvin kiptum showed up at Valencia marathon and everyone knew this is the man to succeed kipchoge. Unfortunately he ran just 3 historical marathons and we lost the heir at young age. We are still waiting for such unique talent to come around. Meanwhile there is a gap.

For the thousands of people, who just want to run sub 4h, sub 3h or sub 2.5h, it's one of the easier runs, because you have lots of pacers and the course isn't that hard. Still harder than downhill Boston of cause 😉.
