@stephenherring I don't believe anyone knows what speed they were traveling at, the roads in Kenya are atrocious - he supposedly hit the ditch and lost control of the vehicle. If you ran into a tree at 10mph you'd give yourself a concussion, now imagine hitting it in a car at even 50, you're dead near enough whatever speed you're moving at

Unbelievable 30.15 10K is just 15 seconds outside women's only WR. HM 64.16 is the fastest HM of this year. Incredible!! Second half 65.42 is the fastest ever in women's marathon. USA Z Panning men's ran second half 66.56 , C Albertson second half 64.57 and she finished ahead of all other USA pro runners. Stupendous!!

The record has fallen from 2:14 to 2:11 and now down to 2:09 in the last few years. Call me a skeptic but I’m not buying any of these times as being clean. This is just my opinion and it is not based on any other information except watching marathons and new world records over several decades. The second place female was almost 8 minutes back! It’s amazing how she was able to run, with her flag, so effortlessly after the race. Maybe it is a secret interval workout that nobody else has ever thought of before that allows her to run so fast.

I agree. I've been following the sport since the 1960s. I remember 2:08 being set by Derek Clayton in 1969, and no one even got close to that for many years. @laurenmp7486

And the crazy part is, while the temperature and humidity were great for a marathon, the wind wasn't. And Chepngetich still went under 2:10. To do that with the winds we have here in Chicago today just takes her time to another level. Like imagine what she could do if she didn't have to run into a headwind or swirling winds for miles. On top of that, she's self coached. She's got no one telling her what to do in training sessessions or helping with race strategy. Also the absence of Kiptum really stung, because if he was here, a course he knows, he'd be going for the sub 2 hour marathon.

Love ur vids Andrew. Someone brought up pronunciation... You do a pretty good job with names generally...and I know Kenya isn't your favorite country rn, but here's some tips for Kenyan names... Chep'ngetich: emphasis on "tich", no vowel on the '...think chepneteach. Kiptum, emphasis in "Tum"...think kiptomb. Kipyegon, emphasis on ye, not kip...kipYAYgon. And one Ethiopian tip...Kebede... The first and last e's are more like uh and the middle one is like the first half of "bird"... kuhbi(r)duh

Solid advice, though TRP doesn't butcher the African names as much as others do. The one name nearly all American/Euro journalists/media butcher is Cheptegei, where the 'ei' understandably becomes 'ai' in English. I've watched so much TRP content I nearly found myself saying 'Cheptegai' 😂.

I was shocked about the women marathon result. Breaking 2:10 for the 1st time ever in history didn’t expect this at all. This is a really huge accomplishment of not only a women runs sub 5 minute mile pace for the entire marathon but breaking 2:10 marathon by a few seconds at the same time. Crazy part is that exactly 5 years ago Euild Kipchoge 1st human ever to run a sub 2 hour marathon. 5 years right after Ineos 1:59 marathon completed on October 12, 2019 now a women broke 2:10 marathon on October 13, 2024. This is one of the greatest world records of all time. I didn't think it was possible - at least, not before Assefa - for a woman to run under 2 hours and 10 minutes for the marathon. She has SMASHED Assefa's world record by nearly *2 minutes.* I really don't know which is more impressive; Kiptum's 2 hour, 35 seconds run or Chepngetich's 2 hour, 9 minutes, 57 seconds run. Id like to point out that Korir ran the 2nd half in 1.00.25 - thats unprecendented, although Kiptum ran 59.45-47 twice, this is faster than Kiptums 2nd half in Valencia (1.00.30) and 20 seconds faster than Kipchoge and Bekele's fastest closes (2.00.45-46) - I suspect he'll soon become the best in the world quite comfortably - it was similar huge negative splits that led Kiptum to such a huge world record, and Chicago isn't known as a fast course either - I fully expect him to become the 5th sub 2.02 runner and look to overhaul Lemma and Bekele

It was a good race, but my hopes of seeing a sub 2:00 time in this decade died with Kelvin Kiptum

remember asking my running coach if the women will brake the 2:10 barrier soon and he said yes very soon and that was like 6 months ago

He’s rattling off these numbers but I’m not sure it’s possible to comprehend just how insane they are. Marathon runners are the greatest athletes in the world.

The fact that as a track runner I can barely run that fast for 400m is insane

When did they start allowing pacers? The drafting benefit is easily worth a few mins

If Kipchoge's sub-2 marathon doesn't count because he had pacers then the same should apply to women. But, they get pacers who block all the wind for them for the entire race. Hmmm

I suppose it was allowed but..........

Theoretically a male marathon could also be paced the entire distance (lol). But kipchoges pacers changed every 5k, it wasn’t an official competition and there was something about him picking up his nutrition

Kipchoge's sub 2 hour doesn't count because it wasn't an actual marathon race.

I think you misunderstood how that race worked. 1. There were rotating pacers, something that isn't allowed normally 2. It was a closed competition. Nobody else was allowed to enter the race besides Kipchoge and the pacers 3. There was a car that had used laser tech to show the pace of a 2:00:00 marathon so the pacers could have a consistent pace below 2:00 If you want a summarization of all of this, Kipchoge's sub 2 marathon didn't meet the IAAF requirements for it to be considered an official WR

It's a mixed race and to be fair Kelvin barely used pacers in Chicago last year nor in London with bad weather running alone.

I'm curious how that compares to men's timing. That's got to be better than a sub 2 marathon for men. I definitely did not comprehend her time at all when I first saw it. Idk if I've ever been this shocked by a world record.

So if Kiptums 2:00:35 world record is 1322 yeah it's gotta be sub 2 equivalent. Unbelievable performance. The points system adds a whole extra layer of fascination to it.
