A few months back, we took a look at the fully electric version of BMW’s all-new eighth-generation 5 Series sedan. But we know, and BMW knows, that not everyone is ready to jump on the fully electric bandwagon just yet. So, BMW has wisely kept internal combustion engines as part of the 5 Series portfolio, and this week we put one to the test.

Looks nice, thanks for the review, been eagerly awaiting this one. It's a hard choice between this and the E class. Many deduced that the E-class is the superior vehicles but there are a few things the BMW has that I value greatly. Fuel Economy, weight, passenger volume and reliability. I'd be upgrading from a Lexus IS200t, so I'd want notice the increased room, and I've heard many say the E class feels cramped. Seeing that Toyota had a hand in improving BMW's mass market motors, to where the 530i has port injection, that alone sways me heavily towards the 5. And also seeing an E class at the dealership, and seeing a 5 series on the road, the 5 certainly has more presence and comes off more like a 7 series. Not to mention that most of the comparisons compared the E class with RWS which the ICE 5s don't have.

BMWs haven't been sporty for a long time. Having driven this car it is less sporty than a Honda Odyssey Minivan.

Looks too tall and frumpy for a BMW sedan, likely to accommodate the battery packs on the i5. The 5-series and i5 should've been built on separate platforms and body, what works best for an EV doesn't work well for an ICE.

4 banger, no physical buttons, digital gauges, and really unfortunate styling. You have to spend $70k for a 5 series just to get a decent version.

the irony is EVs work WORSE in cities. yes the distances are shorter but there is nowhere to charge them at all unless you own an entire house in a city in which case congratulations you're a millionaire.

in the slalom the car can be seen rolling like a 30 year old Lexus and they are saying it has "minimum body roll" ... LOL ... i drove this car and was DISGUSTED by how much it rolls ... and 6 second acceleration ? that's barely faster than Camry Hybrid ( a.k.a. NYC taxi ) and you are calling this "sports car" ? i don't know if BMW paid you of if you're just delusional but you lost all credibility with this "review" ( advertisement )

Amen! Former G30 5-Series owner and this G60 is disgusting porker of a car. Went for a new Arteon SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion instead and could not be happier. For nearly 45% less than the cost of this new ugly 5 Series, my Arteon decimates with 4.7 seconds to 60 acceleration and 13.1 seconds quarter mile @103MPH.

All I can think of reasons not to purchase this car: 1. Ugly as heck. A geometric mess of obtuse nonsense. Reminds me of the Bangle error with the introduction of the E65 7-series. Looks like an Accord on the thumbnail. Heck, this actually makes the new Accord beautiful in comparison. 2. An inline 4 that is anemic. Heck, the Honda K20C produces much more horsepower. My Honda 2017 Honda Accord V6 manual is faster than this bloated mess. 3. Interior is just as ugly with that tacked on screen. Truly a level of lazziness. At least, Mercedes is straying away from that iPad drilled into the dashboard look. 4. Minimal physical buttons is asking for an unreliable mess. Screens go out, another 10k in repairs for a non functioning car. 5. At least, the ZF 8-speed is a masterpiece. But still ugly as hell. 6. A bloated heavy mess. Ugly as hell. 7. Did I mention it was ugly.

My 2023 Arteon SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion is faster than this thing and costs 40% less plus looks leagues better: 0-60 4.7 seconds and quarter mile: 13.1 seconds @ 103MPH.

Another nightmare from BMW that is designed for poseurs. And God forbid you keep it beyond the warranty. BMW lost the plot years ago, and that is very sad.

i will give this car one thing - compared to Toyota Camry ( which is about the same size inside, but 1/3 the price ) it definitely feels much more refined - but it isn't any faster or sportier unlike what this review claims. the i5 M60 and M5 probably ARE sporty but i haven't driven them. don't think you will get the base 5er and will have some kind of rocket just because it says BMW on the badge. the 530i is for grandmas.

BMW's used to be great cars! This 530i is 4 cylinders and does 0-60 in 6 seconds! Slow. And it's $62,000. Expensive. Regarding the looks, can we agree on "not much in the looks department"? I don't know who this car is targeted at, but I'm going to read the comments and predict it's not well received.

Agree on all counts but keep in mind a 1990 BMW E34 M5 used to take 6 seconds to reach 60 MPH and that was considered super car performance 34 years ago.
