What was Magnus' motivation for asking for a split? It is pretty clear to anyone who watched the full match. Magnus had been losing momentum and was quite depressed about how the last matches were going. In each sudden-death match, he was the one under time pressure, and his position was almost always worse. In other words, he pretty much realized that moment he cant easilly convert it and there is a fairly high chance of losing the title.

Sorry, but the high jump comparison is not valid (even disregarding the rule that the competitors can share the prize) - as there comes a point in the high jump where it might be impossible for either jumper to jump any higher and, assuming that both jumpers have the same maximum jump, a sharing of the prize is the only possible outcome. In Blitz chess this ceiling doesn't exist and statistically (especially between Nepo and Magnus) there has to be a winner after a certain number of games.

People here pretending as if a sudden-death blitz tiebreak will go on forever. Unless the players themselves pre-arrange rhe draws, its highly highly unlikely to happen. All this drama with two manchildren "too tired" to play on and decide a champion, will now force FIDE to change a perfectly sound tiebreak system that exists in the World Cup and World Championship itself. What happened already happened. It is what it is. The right thing to do now is for FIDE to come up with a clear rule explicitly prohibiting the sharing of the championship. We should understand that the FIDE Rapid and Blitz championship titles are not there to carry and the term "reigning FIDE Rapid Champion" or "reigning FIDE Blitz Champion" is not a common usage unlike for classical chess where the Champion carries the title throughout the time he won the title until it is wrested from him and appropriately referred to as the "Reigning World Chess Champion." I respect a dissenting opinion though (like that of Hammer). But hey, after getting these criticisms from many GMs and top players, would that spur Carlsen to make a comeback (at least on classical chess) such that it will motivate him to work really hard to once again dominate the chess world and demolish everybody!

After looking at the Freestyle tour rules and how each Grand Slam is selecting their participants, I can confidently say it will be a much bigger circus than any WCC cycle. Even the GCT feels more legitimate than this new Freestyle Grand Slam tour. Maximum tour points will decide their champion, instead of a proper 1v1 matchup at some point -- 😂 what a joke. And the field in each Grand Slam can vary a lot -- which means the few constant players who play all Grand Slams will be the most likely to gain more points and win the Tour. I have asked this in many different fora and as yet not got an answer. What would have happened if one of the eight quarter finals had become an twelve hour long match like that Isner/Masud Wimbledon tie that ended up 70-68 in the fifth set? It is all very well saying a final should go on until a result is reached, but what about a quarter final? Would both the womens and the open semi finals be put on hold until the marathon finally was over, possibly in the middle of the next day or something crazy. (And don't say it couldn't happen. Nobody imagined a tennis set could end 70-68 until it happened). Obviously some form of "rule breaking"would have occurred at some point from FIDE's side for the sake of the other players, venue bookings and broadcasters if nothing else. In my opinion, within the framework of this tournament's rules, Magnus was well within his rights to make the offer and Nepo well within his rights to accept it. FIDE should IMHO have said no but then "bent" the rules by saying you play 1, 3 or 5 more tiebreaks and after that armageddon. Just as I am sure they eventually would have done in my quarter final example. The tournament rules are the issue here.
@melporean83942 күн бұрын
This is the blitz format - eight minutes per game. Many games are decisive. Highly, highly unlikely a match would take an unreasonable amount of time. Also the players were scheduled to play three hours of chess in an eight hour time period. There was lots of down time to use up if they needed more time in the quarters or semis.

Good talk. I still maintain that blitz (or 15min rapid) is utterly irrelevant... (good point by Jesse - no way that could happened in serious chess c'ship!) ...but the 'drama' is sure funny ;) And yes, there's no more proof whatsoever that Magnus is 'the best' at any format. Well, the history will remember him as Karpov 2.0... chesswise; he's not an ideological criminal... etc.

As far as the tennis tiebreaker thing goes. Obviously it DID come up. And they changed the rules because of it. But yes they just should have prepared ahead of time. FIDE should have put the Armageddon rule in or something.

Hammer says Fabi agrees with the splitting title, because he had a similar situation. But that's misleading, Fabi didn't say that. Yes, he mentioned this situation, but he did not refer to it as an argument. He had other arguments, I advise you to watch his video, here they just spend an hour discussing why Magnus is sooo bad.

Remember when Isner had an 11 hour match at the first round of Wimbledon because neither of them could break the other’s serve? Magnus couldn’t handle something like that

Interesting double-standard - when Magnus and Ian discuss potential draws, they're already guilty. When FIDE is "reminding" players of their contract - they're just reminding, not threatening. So one implication is guilt and the other implication is non-existent?! Also - I watched until the end, mostly agreeing that this shouldn't have happened. Magnus has a lot to swallow on this one. But the one thing that drove me away was the Jesse salt in the end. Just an obnoxious Magnus hater, trying so hard to say something smart, when all he spits in the end is spite.

Magnus doesn't deserve his blitz title.
@mfizme2 күн бұрын
Who deserves then? Magnus just beat all the players except Ian in this championship, of course he doesn't deserve it. Lmao

Oh, you're calling the strongest players of our time cowards in other comments. Then you don't have to answer, it's clear who I'm dealing with. 🤢

Agree. This Blitz title will always be a asterisk.

@@mfizme You have to beat ALL of the players to win 1st place in a competition. So no one. Maybe Duda and Wesley should play a match.

@@mfizme Rightly said, a cheater and match fixer is best suited for that title ...kudos to you fangirls ...lol

Fun fact: Magneto has a family friend as FIDE president, the orbiter of the final game was from USA who has been working 30-40 years in the Norwey :) what can we expect?
