Have you ever been deposed for spending $22 million on a party? Let me know below. Do you have any HAI topic suggestions? Let me know here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfUdlvw6YgU44J8AnM2U_ZvRMyvh_CUM51LYSqF5nYJB9d1-w/viewform?usp=sf_link If we use your suggestion, we'll send you a free HAI t-shirt! Speaking of topics, some people have pointed out that this one has been covered by another KZbin channel. This topic came in via our suggestion form, but I imagine the person who suggested it could have seen that video. Normally I search to see if any similar channels have tackled the same topic, but I guess this time I just didn't... Looks like that channel has done a few we did first too, which kinda just shows how it's inevitable if you cover similar things and make enough videos. I try to avoid topic overlap, but I'm not too annoyed if others do this as long as the videos aren't actually plagiarized. Nobody owns a topic.

Apparently this party actually cost just under 650 million dollars (adjusted for inflation, which would have been a better click-bait title). They also didn’t send the queen for another reason (3:23), it was because the shah of Iran was known as the “king of kings” and the British government didn’t want their queen looking like she was paying homage to the king of kings given that they thought she was better (cause she is and can keep a country together). That’s what I heard so if you think I’m wrong, please just tell me and don’t berate me in the comments, thanks

The company that my dad worked for had a BIG presence in Iran in the 1960s & 70s. My dad was offered a position there and my parents were seriously considering making the move, to the point that my older sister remembers looking at school brochures with my mom. Ultimately, the company was only offering to pay for the education of three children and my parents have five children. So my dad opted to not take the position in Iran and stayed with a different division in Baltimore. We wouldn't have gotten to Iran in time for this party, but we would have just been getting settled by the time the Revolution began to heat up. When the Shah and his family left Iran, my dad's company pulled their people out all at once. I remember watching a news report of all the American families arriving in the US after being evacuated. My dad was pointing out a number of people whom he recognized. One of the families moved into our neighborhood and I went to school with one of their sons for a year or two. I have a couple Persian friends and we often talk about life in Iran in the 70s and what might have been.

The thing is, this isn't even the only empire brought down by an expensive party. Emperor Bokassa I of the Central African Empire spent slightly less on his 1976 coronation ceremony, $20 million, but as the CAE was much poorer than Iran, this represented 1/3 of the nation's entire GDP. And if you've never heard of the Central African Empire, that's because it was previously the Central African Republic until Bokassa declared himself emperor and threw that party, and its excess (and his dictatorial rule) pissed off the populace so much that the "empire" lasted less than three years before he was deposed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_African_Empire

@Bird_Dog00
@Bird_Dog00 4 жыл бұрын
@sp2004 I'm guessing, not everyone in Iran did benefit equally from that economic expansion... Let's not forget that the Sha was essentially a pupett of the west. His regime was installed after the iranian prime minister was deposed by the british and americans in the 50s. The guy's crime? he said (im probably paraphrasing): "Hey guys, see all that oil money that just leaves the country while we only get the table scraps and the mess? Let's change that, shall we?" The brits didn't take having their oil company nationalised lightly and the rest is history. Sadly a theme that repeats itself over and over. A country sees its ressources exploited by forgeign companies and all the money leave the country, and when the country asks for a fair share, it's ignored for so long until it says "screw you guys, if you don't want to play fair, I take it" and nationalises the relevant companies. Then everyone comes down on them like the wrath of god...

Those are not just ordinary Mercedes-Benz limos. Those are Mercedes-Benz Grosser. And 250 of those is eye watering expensive. The Grosser is the most over-engineered Mercedes of the 1960's, and to think that even the Rolls-Royce Phantom doesn't even come close in style, luxury, technological advancement, and quality.

I think my 3-hour pasta dinner where I singlehandedly ate an entire box of Hannaford brand pot-ready thin spaghetti between the hours of 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. without gaining so much as a pound of weight might dethrone the Grand Gala Dinner for the record of the most lavish official banquet in modern history, I don't know for sure, though.

Disregarding loss of ruling a basically wealthy country, I’d say a more expensive party - also in the 1970’s - was the coronation of Emperor Bokassa I of the country he had rechristened the Central African Empire. It cost $25 million in a country that at the time had an annual GNP of $75 million.

The most lavish party I ever threw cost $395 for 7 people. It was at a pretty nice Italian restaurant along the west side in manhattan, and the entrees were so tiny !! The taste, presentation, and freshness was amazing though, especially the Desserts. The raspberry Panna Cotta was very memorable, and the Gnocchi was so well garnished.
