I feel like I’m in that perfect balance of level 2 where even though I might not be “good”, I’m good enough to not give a shit. Makes me scared to reach level 3

My son started guitar 2 years ago. He was a level 0 for about a year and a half. He was awful, like a bag of drowning cats, but he practiced every day 2 or 3 hours at a time and never making any progress, but at least he was trying. Then one day I'm working in the back office and I could hear him through the walls listening to Black Sabbath isolated guitar tracks on KZbin. Way too loud, even for Sabbath. When I went to his room to tell him to turn the videos off and practice his guitar, that's when I found out he wasn't listening to Sabbath, he was playing it. Something finally clicked in his head and he figured it out all of a sudden. I took him to GC and bought him a Les Paul. Me? I've been playing bass for 35 years and I can now play triplets if I concentrate hard enough.

That's a great story! My teenage son plays a little bit but doesn't quite have the passion for it that I did at his age. I'm glad your son stuck with it long enough to see results. We ALL suck at first. Some longer than others. But it takes real courage to keep pushing through those early suck days. I don't care how good a guitarist is, I have nothing but respect for any musician who sticks with it, continuously trying to improve (and maybe improv - sorry, couldn't help myself lol). Sounds like your son has a supportive dad (as well as good taste in music) which I think is great. I hope you both keep rocking out for a long time!

@@musicbsharp Truth is that literally anyone can make it to level 3. They just have to be willing to put in the work to get there. That means lessons, practice, playing live, more practice and more lessons. But to do that you need passion. And I think it's the lack of desire that is the reason why most people fail. I mean, look at KISS. Solid level 2 players, but think as you like, they really love what they do and it shows. And that's what I tell my boys: if they have a love for music but no EVH god level talent, then buy a cape and a flamethrower and put the money in the bank 😁 Edit: it was an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. I ain't made of money. But it was 5 steps up from the cheap Chinese no-name guitar he was using.

Thanks! I wish I could tell you. I've had that thing since I was a teen. I had a couple of RR sheet music/guitar tab books and it might've come from one of them. Or maybe an old issue of Guitar World or Guitar Player? But I honestly don't remember

So, you left me pretty confused. I’ve been playing guitar for only about 5 months now, and according to you, I’m already at level 3. I personally don’t even think I’m that good, I’d just say I’m a pretty fast learner. I’d say my biggest achievement is probably being able to play the intro to „Cliffs of Dover“. Any opinions?
@musicbsharp
@musicbsharp 8 ай бұрын
If you can play the intro to Cliffs of Dover (well) after only 5 months of playing, you're either incredibly gifted, have the best teacher in the world, or spend all day, every day practicing. You, my friend, are on the fast track to virtuosity! Also, I'm 100% kidding in all these videos so don't listen to anything I say lol. There are no levels of playing in reality. The only thing that matters is that you try to be better today than you were yesterday. But if you're being genuine, it sounds like you've got a lot of potential if you stick with it. Everyone progresses at a different rate, but you seem to be smoking along

I really like and appreciate your posts. I can only practice half an hour at a time and usually only once a day because I was crushed by over a tonne and a half of steel and am all types of fkd up from it. I'll be happy to get to level 3 but probably won't be able to because I can't sit and practice for longer than half an hour a day. I'm hoping I can get to level 2. With only being able to practice half an hour each day do you think it's possible to get to level 3? Also I can't stand and play I can only sit and play. Any helpful comments are appreciated.

Thank you for the kind words. 1/2 hour a day - as long as you stay consistent - is enough to make TONS of progress. It'll take longer than if you played for, say, 3 hours a day, but you'll eventually get to where you want to be. Just stick with it!

I hate this suck at coming back to music at fifty, with keys and theory in an academic setting. It is like man, I suck. But I can play some punk, so on my way.
