thank you very much for the perfect explanation of how the compressor works. I've been using Logic Pro for 20 years, but it wasn't until your explanation that I fully appreciate the quality of the compressor. Libor

Wow!! Great video/info. I knew there was a reason I loved this compressor so much. I always use the soft setting on my distortion but I never knew I had so much control over it till now. Thank you so much for explaining all of this. Your tutorials are amazing especially for guys like me who took a few years off.

Aaaaarrrrrgggghhh! How could I have missed the makeup/outout gain signal path? Thank you soooooo much!
@sagcap7927 Жыл бұрын
I agree to a certain extent. You can use the distortion knob without using the compressor and it still adds saturation. The make up gain is mainly used for the compressor section. When you compress a signal and say compress -5db of the signal. At a ratio of 2:1. You use the make up gain to bring up +5db of the signal that you're compressing so its an even signal overall. When you switch on the distortion to soft, hard or clip. Its already adding gain to the desired distortion you want. You compensate for that with the output gain. So if you use the soft setting. Which does add +3db of gain. You would take away 3db with the output gain. If you want, but that's not required. But honestly, the make up gain has nothing to do with adding more distortion to the distortion knob's job. I run instruments through the compressor disabled all the time. And just use the soft distortion and it does a good job all the time. See for yourself.

I use Logic 5 on WIn2000 prof SP4, it is very stable still. I did not make any music for 6-7 years, of course for hobby music I do not want to buy an Apple for Logic and also did not want to use another DAW, I am used to Logic workflow and one gets easyly back to its usage. I need only to re-learn some tricks re. mixing and mastering. The L5 internal plugs were already quite good imho. Esp. the ES2 synth, the EQ is good enough, the effects too. Only the older compressor is probably not the best compared to the one you show here. I use(d) therefore a freeware comp named "classic compressor" Problem is it has no graphic display, is there another older compressor (free) for XP/2000 you can link me to?? My "normal" system is Win7 64bit also very good - but Logic won´t run on Win7 so had to go back..I also bought an older Battery2 on Ebay but it was tricky to get the authorization with NI, however it is solved now the NI support send me now the right number to activate it. I can run eg. 7 x Battery+loaded kits in Logic5 without issues. Normally 3 instances are enough for most tracks..I also use the older synth1 and superwave VST synths.

This is why I have always tried to impress upon people that RELEASE should actually be called RECOVERY. So many people teach that release is how long the transient is compressed before it is "released", which is patently false. I don't care where you turn the dial on the release knob, the release BEGINS at the same precise moment every time, which is immediately after the apex of the transient's compression amount is reached. It is always "released" immediately. the setting on the knob merely dictates how long it takes from the moment of release until the compression amount is fully recovered (back to zero compression).
@frejberglind72715 жыл бұрын
That "aggressive tone" and "punch" from the distortion is mostly a few dbs of gain. It gets louder when you switch on the distortion so you can't really tell what it's doing.
@ap73904 жыл бұрын
False it also adds harmonics
@MrParkerPeters2 жыл бұрын
I was wondering about that too, and I put these comps after a pure tone (of 1khz) and an analyzer after everything on the signal chain. It definitely adds some harmonic content, but it's subtle, as you said the biggest difference is the gain. Try yourself, it's fun! I did it too with the vintage EQ and some other analog sims that logic has.

The most frustrating thing about the compressors is that when you change the distortion type the volume changes, so you have to change the gains to avoid being tricked.
