Completely true. Twenty five years ago, I used to be frustrated that our kung Fu training looked nothing like our sparing and our sparing looked nothing like a real fight. His first observation about time was the most salient for me. If you're reacting, you're always one step behind.

They taught us the same in jujitsu. Anyone within arm's length can knock you out. Warn the aggressor but if they come too close you need to start fighting. He's also right about fights being totally chaotic and unpredictable -- learning to adjust, on the fly, is just as important as any techniques you learn. Also what he said at the end about preparing for a technique not having the outcome you expected -- to do it again or be ready to do something else (don't practice like the fight is over just because you did this or that). We learned how to talk people out of fighting or, if we had to fight, control a situation with minimal injury to either party when possible. And even with all that training I managed to calm 3 situations using words or deception only.

I often wonder if attribute development is more ultimately important (because they can also be applied to other areas of your life, not just the fight that will probably never happen).What do you think SgtFitnessOnline?

It's a point that often isn't explored, but it's probably true that many people are training for the fight that they want to get into - the one where they get to be the movie hero and demonstrate everything they've spent a lot of time and money learning under optimum conditions - rather than the fight that they don't want or even know that they aren't in any way ready for despite their training.

This is what I mean when I put in the comment "you're gonna get hit while you're cold, not when you're warm". Meaning, you'll never actually be "ready". The whole point of criminal violence is that for it to work, you have to be hit when you _least_ expect it.

In the few fights I’ve had, my mind went to the kill or be killed mode. At that point, there’s no such thing as a fair fight. Once the realization that it may become physical, strike first with anything I can grab. Don’t relent until I’m sure the other guy is down for good. Then leave immediately; no point in hanging around to see what develops... cops, angry crowd, guns. Like the old saying, “He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day!”

Amen. I also work in a prison. Have a long history in a lot of different martial arts too. I find real fights come down to a race to the pinnacle of savagery - you have to be willing to go where your enemy won't, right away. I've seen a disturbing trend in many martial art circles that paint an unrealistic picture along the lines Mick is describing. They tend to produce too many weekend warriors that LARP as ninjas without an ounce of realistic intention. I call this "educated virgin syndrome".

Most martial arts are sports which have rules so for instance in Karate you will never be trained to jab someone's eye or kick someone in the privates but these are two of the most effective things to do.

I don't have to be a martial artist to have average or better reading comprehension, and I'm reading a lot of other posts here where what Mick Coup said went flying right over their heads, yet they think they agree with him and go on about things they've been trained in, e.g. establishing distance. He clearly said there is no distance management; near, far, close up, clinching. You're either fighting or you're not. You're getting hit or you're not. On a world wide documentary produced to compare martial arts around the world, the scariest MF's were the bouncers at back street bars in places like Shanghai and Hong Kong. At first it was a surprise they would include these guys in a documentary about various disciplines. They were pretty much all northern European and British brutes. Not muscles from gyms. Nothing fancy, no techniques except what they learned worked the best to do the job you're paid to do. Keep trouble out of the bar.. Smack the first guy as hard as you know how before he raises a hand to you and drive him into the ground. They used a lot of literal smack downs with the heel of their hands. Split one guy's face to bone from the ear to the chin in one shot. Savagery but it's over and out. Bar patrons are safe and sound.

real fighting involves using every advantage you have. ultimately its about survival. there are no fuckin rules. training is great for fitness but at the end of the day you need to have the mental preparation to be able to do what you need to do to survive.
@kaliyuga93
@kaliyuga93 6 жыл бұрын
Joe Da Silva while someone spends their time "mentally preparing" for a fight someone else is training striking and grappling 4-6 times a week. What is this "mental preparation" you are talking about? Training, sparring, fighting gets you much more mentally prepared to fight than someone that just thinks they are a crazy bad ass and being in deadly combat puts you in an even better mentality to win a fight in a life and death situation. Only one think get you "mentally prepared" training and experience.
@glennrobinson7193
@glennrobinson7193 3 жыл бұрын
@@kaliyuga93 The so CALLED "mental preparedness" you're talking about is the ensuing over confidence you get until you're in a messy chaotic real fight and you discover to your shock and dismay that your prearranged techniques suck, and very likely don't even work unless you're lucky maybe.

I'll totally spot on especially about you're never going to have the space that you would like to have. The problem is if you're not the aggressor your opponent always gets to pick the time and place of the conflict. So you better be ready for whatever, at whatever range in whatever space..... and don't stop. A lot of these self-defense instructors have really great ideas but you can tell that none of them have been in a real fight outside of ring with someone who was a serious opponent. Generally not a lot of talk involved in those exchanges and it's over in 4 to 7 Seconds. Just my personal experience

Absolutely bang on re space, and its not just about people getting in your face. How many bars have you been into where they seem to have jammed as many chairs and tables as possible into a relatively tiny space ? How any tables / counter-tops have you seen that seems purpose-designed to cause permanent injury to anyone unfortunate enough to fall/be pushed into them ? I've seen marble (!) fucking benches in bars in Thailand where they haven't even bothered to round off the points on each corner - caveat emptor, but thats the last place I need to be getting into an argument with an abusive drunk. Andreas Dam were you addressing me or the OP? If me then I would counter to say the interviewee Doug Coup didn’t mention anything about ‘no weapons’. This is wisdom. I wish the video was longer. I could listen to this guy for hours. However I do think any training you can get will certainly help on the street. Muay Tai for striking and Brazilian jui jitsu for ground will come in handy but won’t guarantee anything. Training on a mat with friends is never the same as the real thing but it’s all we got and I want to give myself the best chance to survive. The more time on the mat, the less you will freak out when you find yourself in a bad spot on the street. Everyone needs to get hit in the face a lot in training so when it happens on the street it’s not the first time.

wish he had a school near me ,most truthful no bullshit video about real situational conflict. Most of mine luckily only lasted 10-15 seconds. This came from posturing when I was young and getting g hit in the nuts and ground and pounded. Since then I hit first and continue until the end. Fantastic video

As a smaller guy who served and has been in a few scuffles, the man is on point. I've done mma and it's great. But real talk. Didnt help me when a 230 pound man had me chest to face against a locker. I had to bite him and squeeze his jewels as hard as possible just to merely create space and get the hell out. Fight smart gentleman. No room for egos in the jungle.

I get what this guy is saying loud and clear. After 2 tours in Iraq a chill went up my spine, but he can say more if we could handle it. In combat, your enemy really doesn't want to close distance with you and get into a hand-to-hand fight to the death -- think about it, would you? So if you do find yourself in such a situation, you are not facing an opponent in any sense you are used to. You are facing a person who doesn't want to be there and is hopped up on sooooo much adrenalin it's insane (and so are you). The punch that would knock out the guy in biker bar won't work, and several of them in a row may not either. Your opponent will be biting, scratching, spitting, pissing, vomiting and picking up anything in reach to stab your balls, poke out your eyes and such. No disrespect to martial arts, its ok for most fights, but in combat, it never seemed to make much difference.

yeah witnessed a fight to the death. death smells like shit and piss, not glamorous nor badass, just pathetic. two grown built men squealing like babies that you never expected from their deep voices. one guy in the front on the ground trying to gouge the other's eye, nose etc, while the guy at the back wrapped his arm around his neck while stabbing him around his liver a couple of times a second for a while. the bloodbath made his hand slippery and his kitchen knife tip is bent. It depends on the martial arts, depends on the situation. Hard to pinpoint which MA will help you in life and death situation. Something like eskrima will help you in some situation. UFC MMA wouldn't really do shit

Much better way to communicate a point, than the video at the bar, talking about so-called "hardcore combatives" people. Maybe do more videos with coffee (or tea??) instead of beer. Although I do talk to students about ranges. That's mainly to give beginners familiar points of reference. When we partner up for drills, I have them stand so their arms reach well past the head, varying from just inside the wrist all the way to the elbow.

good bloody advice there!!!!....i practice Bujinkan Ninjutsu and many of those techniques work well enough but my trainer once told me that when in a real fight out side of the controlled dojo environment...things don't always go as planed and some things are unpredictable....to win a fight you must be adaptable, ruthless and never rely on just one technique you learned from the mats....

It`s so fucking true. In my opinion thats for example the problem with schools that teach traditional Martial Arts like Kung Fu or Karate or Taekwondo or Capoeira. I trained few years traditional Kung Fu realized that its just theory which is just unrealistic. Dont waste your time with something like taht if you really want to learn to defend yourself. If you`re in for keep yourself healthy and fit, no problem with that. But don`t be so sure that you can defend yourself now. You very easy tend to overestimate yourself.

What people don't get about combat and by that I mean _actual mortal combat_ is that fighting "fair" will get you *killed.* So when you're told, "No seriously, tear a chunk off his ear" or "No seriously, gouge the eyeball" they fucking mean it.

Distance is defensive. Range is offensive. My range is not your range. I can utilize every bit of my speed and reflexes and strength by knowing my range. I believe that violent encounters are more properly dealt with before contact and altercation. I simply avoid by way of situational awareness. That's the purpose of distance. Cross that line and it become life or death. I am determined to go home. Step in to my range and I unleash. These encounters are rare. Because I do everything humanly possible to avoid violent encounters.

steve gale I am going on 70 years old. I have been a martial artist and boxer and coach and street fighter since I was 9. Most of my family and friends are dead. I am still alive. I am not tough. I intend to survive and go home at the end of the day. I avoid confrontation. And violence. But step in my range and prepare to be utterly destroyed.as a Ronin. It's about life and death. Not who is the baddest man.

steve gale shows your stupidity. You know nothing about me. And yet you think you can kill me in five seconds... The graveyard is full of fools like you. Have you ever killed with your bare hands. Trained COMBAT warriors don't boast or brag. We get the job done. Armed or unarmed. Have a nice day-- and keep spouting off to people you don't know how tough you are...

Another "truth" I was taught by a cop was...accept that you're going to getting hurt. Protect your vital areas, but there's a good chance you're going to get hurt, even if you put the other guy down. It seems common sense, but I've met a lot guys who have never really had a legit street fight and think they can come out without a scratch.

WOW so tru. Martial arts is business, they will feed you all kinds of stuff to get them going. While there are good schools and goood instructors (not masters mind you) that you will benefit from, allways keep in mind not to provoke situations bc you feel assured as you are somewhat trained. The greatest advice I learnt from an actual operator (Golan, Kambodja, Bosnia) was about knife fighting: there are no winners in it should two skilled knifers face off. One simply dies immediately as a result of fatal wounds, other one dies later due to external or internal bleeding. This is bc they both will get some success during the fight, but the weaker one or with a little less skill will fail at some point. Usually the older one (both being at the same level skillwise). So yes, MA is bullshit, only good to make ourselves feel better.

It amazes me how much sense this guy makes. I am not a great martial artist and I dont train stuff for over 20 years or so but what he says is exactly why I left so many martial arts and so many gyms/dojos/whatever cause though I dont know shit about self defense or martial arts, it allways felt wrong what the sensei/Instructor or whatever had to say. Tbh the first time I sat in front of my monitor and was like "Shit! Yes! Thats exactly what I allways had in the back of my mind" was watching a video of Ryan Hoover. Damn I love this channel! Greetings from Germany!

I sum it up to exposure, potential and sustainability. in that order. pretty much what he said, but in different denomination. exposure, is how likely it is that certain aspect or point of the engagement is going to become affected. potential, is how much you can do, or with how much effectiveness, or how ready you are. and sustainability, is how long you can keep doing what you're doing before the balance of forces changes, for better or worse.

Interesting perspective. I agree with a lot of things he says, but not all. It's true that you may or may not have space, but you can use it if you have it. Sometimes you don't need a lot of space to bait someone or get out of range for a second to avoid their own strike. A solid stance is an advantage. I'm not saying not to strike if you are not in a solid, but you should be able to hit harder from a stable stance.
