Basically nothing but the mainstream phones sold to the Australian market work on Telstra... :( You need special software built into the phone that allows you to connect to Telstra's VoLTE network, otherwise it blocked. Telstra's VoLTE is non standardised.

Typical Telstra hey! Well I'm happy with it working on Optus and Vodafone, I didn't think it would even work on any network to be honest. I'm finding Vodafone works with most devices I test but I know now to try Telstra in any other phone reviews lol

Is this certain? Here in Poland, carriers also block VoLTE on devices they don't sell. However, most of them will unlock it if you contact customer support (or unlock it yourself on your side - Orange), only one carrier has shut 3G down and another is in progress, and no one's really speaking about 2G shutdown just yet.

In Europe we have the opposite "problem", we still have active 2G in some areas, especially here in the alps where i live because i assume it works better. A few months ago, a friend found a nokia 2110 with a telescope antenna (i believe mid 90's) and it was still connecting. At my house, i have two bars of 3G and when i go to the window in the upper floor, one bar of 4G that when i'm lucky. Our national provider Telekom has guaranteed to keep the 2G network running until 2028, but i'm sure they will extend it, like they always do here. In houses built before the 2000's you can often still use analog modems without any adapters. Our has both, copper and fibre. We had to pay the fibre installation ourselves when we moved in less than 10 years ago and it was expensive. Everything is so old and outdated here. Some people still have 16 Mbit/s DSL

I live in a country where 2G is still available. These cheap phones are really popular in where I live and we also have the latest smartphones sold and it's a blessing to have such freedom and diversity of choice for everyone.

i love one thing about welcome, they either have decent build quality and cheapo 2g/3g modules or they are the crappiest build but with good 4g modules XD i was really suprised that it had 4g in the first place, considering that it looks a toy phone for children lol. can't wait fot the vlog to come out, i want to visit japan so bad one day!

as european feel so lucky to have 2g network REQUIRED to stay online for security systems and electrical counter remote data sending, therefore i can take my motorola razr 2g phone and randomly start using it perfectly fine any time i want, ALTHOUGH 3G is also shut down here as well, remaining of 2G makes it non issue, also being small countries only here the coverage of upto 5G is excellent most of the territories here! Another good thing is EU countries have not tried to block any amount IMEI's off their network in scale as AU just did, its all manual per request of actually having to report your stolen phone to the ISP and THEN that ONE gets locked!

Some specifics about the IEMI lockout in Australia: The phone will be blocked unless it is in a list of phones that can make calls to our equivalent of 911 or 999 over 4G VoLTE. If it is not on this list, Carriers are required to block it as it is now considered unsafe since the 3G network that some phones without VoLTE fall back on will no longer work. And a phone unable to contact emergency services in an emergency is very unsafe.

Even so, some phones are being blocked when they are working perfectly fine. I don't know why they didn't keep 3G going just for emergency calls and instead rely on VoLTE for it all and panic block phones out of nowhere.

It's insane how bad the blocking situation is here. Amusingly checking that IMEI/TAC on Telstra's official blocked devices checker it's all green saying "not been identified as having compatibility issues"! I also know there's several other devices in the same situation that are also not blocked with the same 'no issues' message but DO rely on 3G fallback or have incompatible modem configurations so can't make emergency calls but carriers haven't realized it yet. Also the AMTA IMEI checker says it may not be compatible, again same situation for many devices there's no consistency in them knowing what's supported. Seriously don't understand how the average consumer or even extremely well informed consumer is meant to know if the phone they have or are buying will actually work for 4G standard calling, let alone 4G emergency calling and if it will continue to work. Also I should point out the determination amendment specifically states that if a phone can't make an emergency call one a single carrier's network it must be blocked but all networks, so even though it works perfectly with a Optus/Vodafone SIM, if it can't make an emergency call with Telstra's special propriety VoLTE configuration it has to be completely blocked from everything, it's the law.

They shut down 3g because it wasn't worth the cost of maintaining which may be reasonable under the right circumstances (like most modern phones supporting 4g). It is still a shame though. When 2g was shut down, Tracfone USA let people exchange their 2g basic phone for a free 3g one. Though the 3g phone was not particularly nice, it was a very basic (for a basic phone) Alcatel.

@@zzoinks No, it wasn't worth the cost. Yes. Plenty of 3G shutdowns do happen. But they left 2G. 4G VoLTE isn't a definitive standard. It's carrier depending. Telstra is the only carrier on this planet that uses band 28. If a phone doesn't support that, it's flat out banned. Great for tourists!

Really enjoyed watching this video. I rather like the phone. ❤ Great speaker sp nothing to whinge about. I was surprised that it had double 4g that was impressive. And it could work after the 3g shutdown and not blocked on by the government. It all seems a massive ploy to get people to buy new phones which is good for business and government but not so much for the people. Or am I seeing conspiracy everywhere lol 😂❤

IIRC the boot sound and Ringtone5 to 7 are Lemon Mobile message sounds (for context they were an Indian phone brand that im guessing ceased operations in the late-2010s). Also I'm having a bit of suspicions about the sounds mentions either that the phone was made by the same ODM as JioBharat V2 (it also has similar ringtones) either some source code resource-related thing Also first time I've heard of ASRMicro as a baseband manufacturer, I only knew of Unisoc making 4g feature phone chips...

Part of the problem is Telstra had to do their own stupid implementation of VoLTE as it isnt standadised. In theroy all phones should be blocked now if they dont comply with Telstra stipidity as they cant make 000 at all times. The blocking is IMEI based, this will make some more dodgy phones able to evade the block as they are copyong IMEIs so appear to be a complaint phone. Legit brands like Xoaomi have real IMEIs so cant evade the block. In this instance as it is a legit IMEI, the company is likely so small that the Australian telcos have not picked up on this phone not complying with Telstra VoLTE. The more phones that show up on the Australian networks, the more likely it will be blocked. (Plenty of problems with the block lists anyway Shutdown was a stupid decision. Not standardising VoLTE was unbeleivably stupid from the International Telecommunications Union as 4G and 5G are data standards, not phone standards like 3G and 2G along with GSM. 4G was not designed as a replacement to 3G yet here we are. :(

I watched Hugh's video but i still don't understand why the IMEI's are being blocked. It's incredibly confusing and I can't even tell if it was mostly the government or mostly the telecoms that did it. Honestly even though I'm still puzzled it seems like the weirdest dick move in the history of technology blunders. Was it on purpose, was it a dumb accident, what is the legal explanation for why these IMEIs are being blocked, and what does it have to do with dialing 000 ? Thanks in advance.

Basically our emergency calls will only work on VoLTE. The government decided that phones that don't support that should be blocked. Problem is they don't know which ones actually will work and not work properly. They just done this stupid protocol that basically guesses and the IMEI is checked with one of their servers and if they think it won't work, it's blocked. It's extremely stupid and a last minute thing they did so we just have to roll with it.

the manufacturer ban sounds more like stuff we have going on in the US. just being anticompetitive with a nation our more allied manufacturers don't like and justifying it with dumb reasons. Ringtone 3 is cs10.mid which is normally a MTK ringtone but certain Spreadtrum (Unisoc) phones had it too in their firmware for some reason, not sure why! It's the same MIDI file. Ringtone 4 is from ZTE as far as I know

You only tested calls, why didn't u txt 3 to "3498"? Also, there are some 4G phones that has either voice/Txts thats working but either voice doesnt or txt doest work or emergency doesn't work... even though if standard mobile calls work. So you may still have some testing to do on this "dumb" phone.

I texted it and it came back with the whole "good news your phone is compatible" But we know that Telstra VoLTE isn't standard and Optus and Vodafone still work with it but as I mentioned, it could get blocked later on.

The 3498 is a service used mainly to see if emergency calls would work or not and other things... so if you returned as "Good news your phone isnt blocked" I dont see why they would block this phone later. No. However, the test to 3498 service to test for phone calls on a device is inaccurate... apparently, in case you didn't know.

ONE of reason they would block the ability to make calls is the inability to call emergency, this Hoswyn phone looks like it passed the 4G test to call it after the 3G is totally switched off 100%
