I guess pet owners (I don't own any pets) would be quick to tell you that the emotional connection with this dealie would be a one-way street. Animals have real emotions and can give love back, whereas this gizmo obviously can't, since it's just programmed reactions. But yeah, room for both. Things like this, and the Anki Vector/Cozmo make me wonder about how in the distant future we'll treat emotions, if we'll think of them as 'real' or not - that part sort of irks me a little.

Awesome idea. However, I am a little conflicted about having my old dog back (died 3 years ago of old age). I do love the idea of having an Aibo dog around because it won't be humping everybody's leg all the time. The Aibo will also be much cheaper in the long run (no vet bills, no dog food to buy, no shot record crap to worry about, no fleas or ticks to be concerned about).

I lost my baby earlier this month, I was holding him in my arms when he passed. It’s been so hard for me to live this new reality. I half expect to see him when I return from work or after shopping trips, typing this already has me teary eyed. My friends say to adopt another doggie, not as a replacement, but as a friend to love & care for. I can’t. I don’t want to and I can’t see myself with another doggie. He’s irreplaceable, and I just can’t imagine owning another. I feel like this might be perfect for those who may be in my shoes. It’s been so hard for me the last two weeks. It feels like he’s still here even though I know he’s not. If I had 3k to toss, I’d definitely consider purchasing this for myself.

I joined an online pet loss grief support group called Pet Cloud USA which has been helpful (for me anyway). I don’t know if it will help you, but wanted to share. The grief is real and my heart is still broken. I actually googled robot dog because I started wishing I could have a dog that would live forever. I can’t afford the price tag for Aido, but I would buy him in a heartbeat if I could. Best wishes for strength and peace.

While I continue to grieve my baby, it doesn’t hurt as much anymore. I continue to wear him in a little necklace just about every day. I never thought I’d be here with a new baby, but he’s helped me a lot. My Cappy was a hugger, always wanted to be carried, always wanted a hug.. this little guy, his name is Jack, he’s a kisser. Constantly kissing, always jumping to be picked up and held. In lots of ways he reminds me of my Cappy, and in a lots of ways he’s his unique self. It’s probably weird for me to say this lol but part of me feels like me meeting Jack was meant to be.

I love how Dedicated Sony is to their tech. They took the time to make the calibration routine look like how a real dog would wake up from a nap like. Their hardware may be expensive, but their software at least matches the quality of the hardware.
