Once you shoot the 357 magnum for the first time you realize how underpowered you've been with semi auto cartridges. The power is mesmerizing.

Fixed barrels are a HUGE advantage with accuracy. Keeping a revolver loaded puts NO pressure on springs. The variety of weight of a revolver and barrel length is almost endless. If you carry a revolver you don't have to worry about whether you de-cocked it, had the safety on or off and the trigger pull will be the same if you practice in double action a lot, or always pull the hammer back. Most revolvers are "Keep Sake Worthy", unlike many semi-autos; which is an enormous part of gun ownership. You can scope many revolvers now. You don't have to chase all your brass all over the place at the range. You don't have to buy tons of mags. The only downside I see is the capacity. And if you carry,...most guns that most people carry (Semi-Autos),.... you are not going to have that many more rounds at the ready. And accuracy and practice is much more important, especially if you are around other people. Bad guys might not care about harming others,..but we do. .........(This is NOT to put down Semi's, but to show that revolvers and their loads are ANYTHING but outdated.) Also,....I find hot women with a revolver on her hip much sexier than one with a semi (Lol).
@GunSam5 жыл бұрын
I have proven the accuracy thing time and time again, even to the point of having tighter groups at 25 yards with a snub nose .357 magnum or .38 Special than a 9mm with a 4" barrel.

I would imagine this is the same reason why bolt actions are preferred for serious long range marksmen and snipers. Automatic is very useful but it has drawbacks that can't be ignored.

Most, if not all, citizen self defense shootings are done by the 3rd-6th shots anyway. And the muzzle blast from a 686-6 will be a force multiplier for anyone that carries.

I’ve seen so many jams in my friends semis vs the revolver which rarely ever has issues and fires just about any kind of load without issue.

@Freddy Ruger the military has the budget for 1 hit out of 200 rounds. Semi autos have a better rate of fire but definitely not better accuracy.

Thanks, it means a lot to me coming from a professional which I am not. Interestingly enough I been pondering getting a G21, I had the G36 and even that was a bit big for me to conceal carry, so I figure if I get another .45, why not get a full size one with a rail and make it my primary house gun. I LOVED the 230 gr Win PDX1 ammo, it was not a plus P but had the energy of a +P. It shot great, not much recoil and expanded well through my denim and water jug test.

I don't know if they have updated them, but I remember in the mid-90s seeing a copy of the FBI tests. The top performer was the .45ACP, specifically the 230-gr Hydra-Shok. Since hollowpoint manufacturers specifically design for the FBI criteria now, I can only imagine (and from what I've seen in tests) the HST is better.

I agree the .38 is the best. I also agree the .357 magnum is the greatest. My first handgun purchase was my 3 " Taurus 65 back in 1992. I still have it and still love it. I now have a 4 " Taurus and love that equally as well. Accurate, reliable and VERY hard hitting. What's not to love? Another reason to love revolvers is because you don't have to worry about spring compression so keeping them loaded is not an issue. I don't like the idea of a fully loaded high capacity magazine sitting in a drawer for years. I had an old Walther PPK that jammed all the time because the previous owner did that. Got rid of that one and now I'm a revolver fan to the core. Let's face it, 16 rounds of 9 mm is just asking for a spray and pray to happen. Sad to see the wonder nine being adopted by the FBI again. I guess some people don't learn from their mistakes. To me, it's kind of like dating your ex wife....

While my EDC is an autoloader, my favorite is an M27-6-1/2". I think .357 is the best, most versatile all-around caliber. You can use lighter but fast loads, heavier bullets loaded that are almost as fast to deliver more energy. You can use a snubbie and .38 Special loads for low recoil. Or lightly loaded 357 for good control in a 2" barrel. You can go intermediate with a 4" barrel and 6, 7, or 8 rounds and have everything in a more reliable package than you get in most micro or subcompact autoloaders. If you need a big game stopper and don't have a .44 or have trouble with that recoil, a heavy load on a .357 will give you maybe a really good option. In spite of all the autoloader lovers claims, we all know a good revolver has far fewer malfunctions. And if you do have to pull it out against bad guys, the psychological aspect of the look and muzzle flash has been known to make them give up. Let's face it, my M27 is a twin to Dirty Harry's M29, and most would-be bad boys have no desire to find out if it will "blow your head clean off." I'd rather them quit and wet their pants than have to find out.

You were hitting on the best part to the .357 mag, that would be reloading!! Many many different powders can be used along with the grain weights available right off the shelf. You said anywhere from 110gr-180gr and even 200gr can be found. I personally stay with 158gr for standard rounds but for woods/carbine loads 180gr deepcurl hp’s. Next is simple 124gr full jacket flat points on a couple different powder charges and you have good plinkers for both carbine and pistol. The hotter loads with 124gr jhp’s gives a great defense load that doesn’t recoil like a bastard and can get in the park of 2000fps from a 16” carbine. No need for .38 specials, they won’t feed from a true 1892 ( requires .357 oal )and just leaves carbon rings in your cylinders. 124gr bullet, 5gr of #9 w/mag primer and you’ve got a winner!! Cheap to load, in the $.12 - $.15 range and fun to shoot. Nothing like hearing those flat points cutting the air till it SMACKS!!! the paper at 50yds or more from the 1892, that’s gotta phuck some shit up!!!

I have to agree, I just picked up my first revolver it’s a Ruger Security six in very good condition. I was never a fan of revolvers I always wanted a auto loader 9mm 45acp even 40s&w. But for what ever reason I decided I wanted a revolver. So I went to my local GS he pointed me in the direction of the Ruger and so the newest chapter in my firearms began. What I’m noticing is there are so many different loads for the 38/357 it truly is a great cartridge for a reloader.

Sidearm....357 magnum, 4 in SS 5 shot. RIFLE, break action, single shot, scoped, 22 in barrel. Sidearm and rifle, same cartridge. For the rifle add 100 to 500 fps due to the longer barrel. At a hundred yards the rifle with the longer barrel and scope, 2 in, 3 shot groups, from the bench. For a bunch of reasons I handload for my Magnums, pistol and rifle loads ARE different. The versatility is the main drive for the 357. 110 - 125 JHP are for PSD and the heavier bullets can be used for putting food on the table. Handloading brings to the table a complete set of options. An 1100fps revolver loading will give about 1150 FPS the same round in the 22in barreled scoped rifle we are looking at between 1300 & 1450 FPS increase. My favorite deer and hog bullet is a Hard Cast Semi Wad Cutter. Bullet Placement is the KEY. From my rifle the 357 shoots Flat and hits HARD.

There is no contest. 357 Magnum is the greatest of all time. However, in a light concealed carry platform, I'd much rather be shooting a properly balanced 38 + P load.
@GunSam5 жыл бұрын
I'm sort of in the boat of wanting short barrel .357 loads, as essentially what that means is less powder, and or faster burning powder. That way in a carry gun it has more power than a .38+P, and still a little more power than a 9mm, but still having the ability to shoot it well.
@828enigma64 жыл бұрын
True that, if you're using a revolver. I've a 649 J frame Smith 357. I can shoot 357 Magnum in it, but the recoil is beastly. Much better with 38 Special +P, or +P+. And still has power to get the job done, on humans, at least. And fire it repeatedly in a timely fashion. In the steel frame J, 357 is jut a little too much. Go to a snub K frame, 357 is much more shootable.

Regarding capacity, if one is a purely defensive-minded person like me where I'm always looking to retreat and disengage, the revolver with its incremental reliability advantage fits the bill perfectly. Whatever situation you find yourself in, if you have to unleash a couple full power 357s at the bad guy(s), I guarantee you they're taking cover. That's when I retreat out of harm's way or at the very least to a more defensible position. In the vast majority of situations high mag cap is for offensive or non-retreat scenarios. That's not my bag so a 357 is my cartridge of choice because if I do have to put shots center-mass, they're going down.

I took a 18 gage sheet of steel and shot it with a 38,9mm,45 and a 357 magnum. Most of the rounds just put a big dent in the steel. The 357 punched a big hole in the steel.

Main advantage to bottom feeders is higher capacity without reload and easier to reload. But I love wheelguns. They give me the same kind of feeling I get when I have a car with a manual transmission. .357 Magnum is a great all purpose revolver because it has a LOT of power, and as he said, you can always shoot 38 Special from it. Both ammo sizes are easier to find and cheaper to buy than most of the point-4-something calibers.
@GunSam2 жыл бұрын
I hear about the capacity, not disagreeing. But I do get a lot of people talking how high capacity is better, faster reloads but don't give a reason why other than hypothetical reasons about cops in the 80's. One day I would like to get some real information on the subject for average citizens.

I have a 38 Special with 2" barrel. I've already decided that my next gun will be a 357 Mag with about a 6 inch barrel.
@GunSam2 жыл бұрын
6" can be nice. I like a 4" as it can be carried concealed if I have to. A 6" has so much less muzzle rise. If you watch .357 Mag 4" VS 6" in slow mo, a 4" always recoils up and to the opposite direction of rifling. A 6" pretty much dampens that weird push to the side and lowers the rise too.

The man speaks truth!! The different combinations of the .357 and the 38 special cannot be duplicated with other hand gun calibers including the 9mm and the 10 mm. they are both effective rounds, however, in my opinion the 38 .357 is the best due to the simplicity of the revolver and the fact you can use the .357 in a rifle makes the combo. the best!

38/357 are the best for hand loading. You can cast and drop cost per shot down considerably especially if you get lead for free. I’ve loaded projectile from 69gr to 210gr, all different powered loads.

Agreed. Been a fan of the channel for awhile, and was always drawn to revolvers too. Just the aesthetics, rich tradition & historical aspect, raw power, fail-safe design, versatility & range of round options from 22lr, 22mag, 32SW, 327 fed mag, 38 spl, 38 spl+P, 357 mag, 41 mag, 44 spl, 44 mag, 45 Colt, 45 Colt +P, 450, 454 Casul, .410, up to 500 mag not to mention CCI makes shot shells in a lot of calibers. With autos you get good options too, but more boring ones I think. 22lr, 25 acp, 32 acp, 380, 9mm lug & mak, 5.7 x28, 40SW, 357 sig, 45 acp, & 50 AE. Don't know if you own a desert eagle, but since you've done many auto vs revolver ballistics vids using similar cartridges for fair comparison, id love to see a 50 AE vs a 44 mag, a 454 and/or a 500 and see the results. Also, I remember back before u changed your YT name from gun to revolver (aficionado), I swear I recall a vid of u shooting a bunha diff 9mm & 357mag (MAYBE it was 38 spl) and shooting it into layered pine boards or smthng u whipped up with the round names written on em & got similar results and some of the 9mm even outperformed cuz I was like wtf? That was around the time lucky gunner did a ballistic gel video claiming 9mm is as good as 357, but it may have been just penetration and not power & other attributes. Curious if it was ur vid or not im thinkin of. Either way, LOVE your channel, you seem like good ppl, & make my kinda content...u did the fed. punch 22LR test which i got the day it debuted...and I love that fact that u are the ONLY one to do any real testing with Buffalo Bore std pressure 38 spl Hardcast wadcutter. I was hoping to see more of it on YT after I bought 40 rds, but nope. So keep up the great work man, and stay safe!

First 20 buck a box in 2020 or 2021 would be a deal. I agree with you on the 38 or 357 capabilities. All you need to see is the size and weight of the ammo.

One thing that no one brings up is that while modern semi-autos are almost as reliable as revolvers under range conditions, they're far more likely to jam in the street. Dry, stuffed with pocket lint, contact shots, bad-guy grabbing the slide, etc. Revolvers vastly outperform semis under rough conditions.

He did not mention the fact that the two calibers range from a low end power of a 38, caliber to the high end 357. which shoots a 180 grain bullet at 1400 ft. per second with a muzzle energy of 782 m.e. ( Buffalo Bore Ammo). This particular round is a hard cast . The versatility is amazing. Buffalo Bore has a 38 special 158 grain bullet that has 1250 feet per second out of a six inch barrel. Bottom line, it has many uses depending on the situation.
@GunSam4 жыл бұрын
personally, the lowest energy I have ever obtained with a .357 Magnum round was 350 ft lbs in a snub nose with really weak ammo like Hornady American Gunner .357 Mag. Most low end .357 Mag ammo in a 4" barrel gives at least 450 ft lbs, and the top of the line in a 4" barrel for me has been about 700 ft lbs energy. I have not fired that Buffalo Bore round but I have tried Underwood's 180 gr .357 Mag rated at 1,400 FPS and in a 4" barrel all I got was actually 1,220 FPS. A lot of the numbers given by ammo companies are usually either optimistic or velocity takes through unrealistic barrel length. Buffalo Bore is usually more accurate for listed velocity than Underwood, but still often in different barrels than typical.

If I could only have one handgun I would be a 357 Magnum w a 4 or 6 inch barrel I would also try and get a 7 or 8 shot because imo capacity is it's only downfall. But in all honesty 6 shots is gonna be plenty 98% of the time. I would dare to say the chances of your gun jamming is better than the chances of running your revolver dry un a self defense situation and it getting you killed. I'm also pretty fast w speed loads. I always carry one or 2 speed loads

Well I cant argue with you But I can share an observation Guys in Alaska say a 30 30 is sooooooooo small, Dont know any one who has one,,, But it is 2wce or more a 357, And 44 mag,,,, So basically they all work if you put the bullet where it belongs,, Ron spooner explains If some one punches you and you get knocked out Was it the force of the hit Or did they jiggle your cns the right way... But if all you want it a plinker , A close range deer, antelope kill And defense, Then 30 30 is a waste of powder,, There is a story of Alaskan guide bill shoemakers daughter , Who is a registered guide Killed a grizzly bear with one,, Bottom line seems to be Whatever you choose,,, Get good with it, Which means pay attention to your environment,,, And not correctly reading your environment is the number one factor,,,, Millions will die from the magic vaseline Because they don't understand the agenda 21 depopulation agenda Has been a political agenda for the last 20 years. KZbin video by really graceful Came out about Food plants burning to the ground in spite of federal government fire sprinklers apparently being turned off,, A food processor plant is made of stainless steel and concrete, For food service clean guidelines,, Their is nothing to catch on fire,,, without sabotage help,,, Wile off track from the 357 subject It's part of reading your environment example,,,

Just a heads up. If it helps clear up the 10 mm debate. If you have a 10 mm with a 6-in barrel and also a 357 Magnum with a 6in barrel, with maximum hottest loads, they are equal in power. (357 mag ,158grain is mAx load at 1475 ft per sec)(10mm, 165 grain is max load at 1440ft per sec). Two advantages though to the 357 Magnum. 1 is you can always buy a longer barrel than a six inch. Therefore more velocity and therefore more powerful. Also there is some power loss with the cylinder gap, and the 357 Magnum is still that powerful. If you shoot 10 mm out of a revolver, it won't be as fast because it's only been measured in the past through a semi auto. I personally love them all and own them all.

I tried to buy a model 610 but it was out of stock, maybe I will get another chance soon. One benefit of the 10mm revolver that I could see, is if you shoot .40 S&W out of it with moon clips - and if you got steel targets, they will hit harder and be more fun than let's say .38 Special out of my 686. Only issue is unlike 10mm ammo, .40 S&W would require the moon clips to even fire at all so that might be a pain.
