My first handgun is a 1973 Ruger Blackhawk .357. It was my fathers, which my mom bought for him for his 3rd tour in Vietnam. When he passed away it became mine under the stipulation to never sell it.

You call the 38 special a "pip squeak load" but it did serve almost every police department and law enforcement agency in the U.S. for some seventy odd years and got the job done. Specials are nothing to be sneezed at. I'll also add that you neglect to mention that your "too hot" 44 mag is just as versatile as the .357 in that you can also shoot specials which I find equally as mild as the 38. But again, neither round is a slouch.....Nice vid though, I love wheel guns.

My first handgun was just like that one, only older. For years I hunted almost everything with a Smith revolver, a 6" model 66, and a model 34 .22 rimfire. I cast my own bullets for the 66, a 133 grain semi wadcutter for small things with a pinch of bullseye, and a 162 swc with gas check and a healthy dose of 2400 for deer. In those years I became a very good shot with these two revolvers, and always got what I went after. Almost all of the deer that I took dropped on the spot, and I never lost one.

I like the revolvers. Very difficult to own where I live. I am fascinated by the argument for bear defence hand guns - 44 mag vs 10mm vs 454 etc. some of those hand cannons the Alaskan guys carry for bear defence look lethal. Although like any shooting I guess it still helps if you can hit the bear with it! And get a fast follow up shot. I do like the look of the new FN 10mm auto but also love the look of the big Rugar and Smith and Wesson wheel guns. I really like your revolvers. The 22 mag would be handy around a farm. Thanks also Dave. .357 is a great carry gun, I bought a 10mm Rock Island double stack 1911 as a retirement gift to myself. I was thinking of being able to hunt up in the north in the lower 48 states. Couldn't due to wife's health problems. But for me it's still a fun gun to reload and shoot, and if you ever come to the states I'm sure someone can hook you up with a range that rents out guns to shoot, if not we have a couple here in the St. Louis area that will!

@@frankbodenschatz173 Thanks Frank. Your 1911 sounds awesome. Yes I agree on the ballistics analysis of 357. I met a guy here in New Zealand who uses a 357 Mag out of a Rossi Lever Rifle for taking Red Deer out to 100 yards or so. A 357 revolver sounds like a sensible carry option to me! Yes it is for just about anything within reason. I have many pistols and revolvers to choose from and I started out MANY years ago with a 1911 and a Python. I have a S&W M64, a GP100, Sp101, a Security 6, a Trooper Mk lll and I just picked up a 3" Taurus 856 and I'm back shooting the 38/357's. Why ? I have grand children now and they are getting older, when we go out training and shooting those revolvers come out. Mild to wild great for training, very accurate and dirt cheap to shoot. I load hand cast Lee 358-125-RNFP powder coated bullets pushed by charges of Titegroup off my Dillon SDB and go thru lots of them. Still working off cases of pre shortage CCI 500's and casting bullets from scrap lead I'm loading them for around $.03 apiece and my kids really go thru them, for hotter stuff XTP's and CFE Pistol get the nod and let you know your TCB. The 357 has to be one of the most versatile and fun cartridges to shoot and just a ball in my 20" Rossi 357 lever gun.

Now, I’ve owned two Colt Trooper Mk IIIs in .357 magnum. One had a 6” barrel and the other had an 8 3/8” barrel. The longer barrel really tamed recoil but it took a week to draw. The 44 Mag has the same capability to shoot the lighter load of a 44 SPL. The 44 SPL makes it a pussycat like the 38 SPL does for the 357 Mag. Some handloaders just set the bullet a bit deeper in the Magnum cases for the less powerful Special loads. This prevents the fouling in the chamber caused by shooting regular SPL case loads. See FortuneCookie45LC video.

Great video George, I am a huge fan of the .357mag. I own a Ruger GP100 4.2" barrel .357mag. and a stainless steel Rossi 92 lever action carbine in .357mag. My wife owns a Stainless Ruger SP101 3" barrel .357mag., and a Marlin 1894 lever action carbine in .357mag. I reload for .38spl. and .357mag. In my personal opinion the .357mag. is one of the most versatile firearms on the market. I can load .38spl. for Cowboy action shooting, small game or personal protection. Or I can load .357 mag. for everything from personal protection all the way up to deer size game. Nice shot on the pig. Good job! JT P.S. We also own a couple Ruger Super Single Six .22s-l-lr/.22wmr combo revolvers. Mine has a 6 1/2" barrel, my wife has a 5 1/2". We love plinking with them, and mine has been on every small game hunt with me.

I think what you hit on is, in part, why the Colt Python is such an iconic and popular revolver. It has the weight necessary to nicely dampen the recoil of the 357 magnum, and makes .38 special feel like shooting a .22. I know that in today's world the .357 magnum isn't even thought of as all that powerful of a round because there are so many bigger magnums such as the .44 magnum, .454 Casull, .475 Wildey magnum, and the .500 magnum just to name a few that are available. Yet before the 357 magnum came out in 1935 the most powerful commercially made repeating handgun a person could get was the 1847 Colt Walker. So it was a game changing caliber, and even when the .44 magnum made its debut in the Model 29 in 1955 many of those guns just sat on the shelf, or had been returned with only a few rounds fired. People at the time felt that the .44 magnum was just too much gun, and it wasn't until Dirty Harry made the .44 magnum iconic that guns more powerful than the .357 magnum became popular. So I think it is fair to say that the .357 magnum is in the happy zone of providing plenty of power, and easily managed recoil depending on the gun.
@Salieri47
@Salieri47 Жыл бұрын
Look at how many manufacturers copied the heavy barrel & full shroud design of the Python. I know most of my .357s, including the older design Ruger Security-Six, are designed not to drive the energy/recoil into the shooter's hand; don't know if that frame design was borrowed from the Python.
@trapdoorspringfieldmodel1888
@trapdoorspringfieldmodel1888 Жыл бұрын
@@Salieri47 The gun that comes to my mind as being heavily inspired by the Python in looks are the Dan Wesson revolvers. We have to remember that the Python was originally designed as a target revolver, and so it was designed to do that quite well. The action itself dates back to the 1890's with the biggest changes being made to update the design occurred with the current 2020 production models. The frame design was modified to handle the 357 magnum, but it has its roots in older Colt revolvers. As to the classic Python styling we have to remember that the Python came out in 1955, and classic revolvers from Colt and Smith and Wesson, while beautiful looked dated and old fashioned. Rockets, jet engines, and fins where the rage. So Colt did what the car manufacturers did and stuck a big fin, aka the vented rib, on what would become the Python. It looked great, made the gun not look dated, and on top of that they gave the gun a really flashy bluing job. They gave each Python's action a few extra minutes of refinement compared to their other revolvers (a person on the line was expected to assemble four regular Colt guns an hour, but when it came to the Python it was three an hour). In the end Colt created one of the prettiest guns and one of the greatest firearms in history. Their competition in 1955 in Smith and Wesson released an iconic gun that flopped known as the Model 29, aka the Dirty Harry gun. So, how much did other companies copy or draw inspiration from the Python? I don't know, but I do know that companies like to innovate, but they will copy as well. And people may like the looks of one, but the action of another so you get hybrids like a Smith wearing a Python barrel or Bill Ruger's famed Standard that evolved into the Mark IV.

The 357 really is the best one-gun solution. I bought an HK USP in 45acp for this because it’s strong enough to shoot 45 super; the power of the super is about on par with that of the magnum, but the magnums are much easier to find, they run more reliably, and don’t seem as “Rambo” to a court of ignorant jurors. I sold it to buy an old Dan Wesson 15-2 instead. With the changeable barrels, it truly is the perfect, most versatile handgun I know.

Ruger needs to bring back the carbine in 44 magnum and 357 magnum! One of the most practical short range hunting rifles. Most people go straight to the 44 magnums and up when going for woods carry but without a lot of training I think a 357 magnum with stoutly loaded 180 grain hard cast or a turned copper solid would make for a better choice with lower recoil, faster follow up shots and plenty of power to get the job done.

I may have to agree with you on the .357. I have been a 1911 guy since I first was issued one in the early 80's, and since then, everything I purchased for handguns was a semi auto. It is only in the last couple years that I decided to branch out to the wheel gun, and so far, the .357 Colt King Cobra has been fun to shoot. The Single Six in.22 is just a lightweight, and I haven't gotten out to the range with the .45 Colt Blackhawk since it is either freezing or warm enough to be a wet sloppy mess, so after the snow melts, and things dry out, I can get that out and see.

Excellent video! The 357 magnum is a great cartridge, it has excellent versatility. However, I prefer the 41 Remington magnum, and it’s versatility is much better than it once was due to Starline brass, making a 41 special load.

Thanks so much! I always enjoy your videos. I'm working on putting together one that compares the Ruger Blackhawk .357 mag with the SP101 in .357 mag. I didn't get enough footage from the first take and I took them out again today, but ran out of time and didn't get to shoot them. Maybe Monday when I go to my dove field. Again, thanks for sharing. Oh, and I eat them wild pigs although a boar that size maybe not. Congrats on taking one out though.

Great video as always George! I have always been big on 44s but just recently warmed up to 38/357 and picked up a smith and Wesson 627, totally different vein than the Ruger but I love those too! I do think 357 holds a unique place in the handgun cartridge realm…

I agree …357 Mag is the “just right” cartridge. Personally I have a couple 686s that pair nicely with my Winchester 1873 also in 357. Make for a great duo! Old school western! (Well sort of) For the record have nothing against any other cartridges! Love them all!

If you reload, most things can be made just right. I have sweet loads for my 44 mag, but my favorite is my ruger single 7. I have a smith and wesson 32 long load that i use for most every thing and a rip snorting 327 federal magum load that is a screamer in a smaller handling gun. 100 rounds of 32- fit in my pocket much better than the 44 mag for my walk abouts. Man, isn't shooting fun!?

Great vid. 357 Mag is the no-brainer of the revolver world. What other revolver let’s you shoot anything between 200 - 700 ft-lb What’s your view on 38 Special lately. The big manufacturers are putting out some really weak stuff. Most in the 200 something ft-lb range. In my mind 38 Special should be the 9x19 of the revolver and not the 380. Buffalo Bore offering a 38 Special 125 grain that has 380 ft-lb out of a 3 inch. That should be the sweet Spot ballistically

Round #4 from the Vaquero had quite the fireball from the muzzle and the cylinder/ forcing cone gap!
@TargetSuite
@TargetSuite Жыл бұрын
Actually, no. I was able to show in a previous video that those occasional Fireballs are a result of timing of the video capture. In that video I was able to show that with a much higher frame rate I was able to capture more of the fireballs. So barring any poorly made ammo, which I hope to avoid, it's just the luck of the draw on whether that video frame captures The Flash or the lull between the flashes.

@@TargetSuite I wondered why I only saw it on one shot, that explains it! You could use videos showing the flash between the cylinder and forcing cone to instruct newbie shooters how NOT to hold a revolver and hurt themselves. Thanks George.

Nice video George! Nice revolvers! Yep good everyday working cartridge, the .357 Magnum . With the 38 Special option and the huge amount of bullet weights and shapes available in bullet molds you can tailor a load for about any purpose. Can you tell me how far the shot was on the hog with the 160gr bullet in 44 Mag Ruger Carbine because that’s some nice performance for such a light bullet
