Just two notes: Lens guards not installed as directed (blue dot needs to be at bottom) and the cover is not a safety/guard feature - it’s a heat related skin to make it more comfortable to hold camera when it gets very hot shooting 8K for long stints. So not included as an actual safety case.

THIS!!!! This is the review I wanted to see. Thank you. I have been frustrated because all the reviews are comparing the X3 to the X4 and are talking as if it's the best update ever to a camera - and not including the very relevant 1-inch into the conversation. I have wanted the 1-inch for VR because of the sensor size, low light performance, and photo quality. I use these cams for VR when we travel, but not as action cameras which is what the X4 seems to be marketed as. I really appreciate your opinion here as it gives a fair fight to all cameras in the conversations. Cheers.

🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
@nowandrew44429 ай бұрын
You don't want it (the 1-inch) **for** the sensor size. You want it because the sensor enables those other characteristics you mentioned, low-light & picture quality. Same way you don't "want" a V8 engine, you want the performance it brings.
@BenClaremont9 ай бұрын
Yes obviously 😂 and you don’t get those things without the sensor, hence why you DO want it…
@nowandrew44429 ай бұрын
@@BenClaremont Oh come dude, don't be absurd, you're better than that. A bad 1" sensor will always give worse results than a good 1/1.3 or 1/1.7. And in fact what you want for both of those qualities (low-light & image quality) is *low resolution* so that each pixel gets a larger total share of the light. That's what really makes the difference, it's just that in a larger sensor the pixels are also bigger so accordingly they receive a larger quantity of light per photo site. **_But_** if their technology is bad simply having a large sensor is not going to give you good results. Today's 2L-engines give more power than the V12s from Lamborghini from the 70s. Do you want a V12 because it's bigger? No, you want the result. Don't fall into the "Well gee shucks Cletus, Uhh think me wants the bigger number one!" trap or the "gimme the marketing goodies I've heard about" nonsense that point to a lack of understanding of the actual technology. 🙄

Point taken. So in your opinion for low light shots... X4 or 1" RS?
@boblockey89819 ай бұрын
Yours is the first review to show that “protective case”. It obviously doesn’t appear to protect much the way you attached it, but I wonder if it’s meant to go the other way, protecting the screen when doing higher speed/higher risk activities where dirt, rocks etc. may hit the screen…? Just a thought. Thanks for the review - wish I had the budget to upgrade from my OneX.

Many useful informations. Great overview. A big disadvantage is, that shooting HDR photo can only be exported as jpg. And no bracketing choices as well.
@bigboldbicycle9 ай бұрын
14:14 single lens mode allows you to use the camera like a normal camera without every file being double the size. It means not having to carry two cameras for different purposes, great for travelling, where you want to keep amount of gear to a minimal, including number of SD cards. I wish they would upgrade the RS 1 inch to do it, as the big sensor would allow it for use as a single lens camera.
@BenClaremont9 ай бұрын
Sure but SD card space is always plentiful. Cards are cheap and go up to 1TB, which is enough to store a year’s worth of footage at least.
@FridgeProductionsLtd9 ай бұрын
@@BenClaremontI'd agree with @bigboldbicycle in that this feature gives either kit-limited travellers or professional filmmakers like me who has just worked with lots of motorcycle mounted action cams to deploy the X4 as another action camera if the need arises ie one of them is defunct or another is required. It's all about having the option available, even it that is never or seldom used. It's like having the facility to top up other devices from the X4 battery. Not something I'd likely do, but the option is there, because it's a feature they can easily provide.

I’d love to buy the X4 if it was able to be sharp that close as the X2 but can’t find any tests or answers to this yet. Any ideas?

This was a really good review but I just wanted to point out that when you mentioned bad audio because of the background noises that are picked up, for an action cam the background noises are often the most important sounds, especially in any kind of Motorsports. Now for vlogging I can understand this is a big negative, but in the majority of the uses for an action camera it is actually a positive point.
@BenClaremont8 ай бұрын
The point I’m making is that it’s picking up UNWANTED sound. All cameras pick up background noise very easily. Most people prefer the option of capturing close range sound, as opposed to any and every sound off in the distance, like in my example.
@damon20r8 ай бұрын
@@BenClaremont Yes exactly, it is UNWANTED because you are vlogging and background noise is a very undesirable thing for that. But I would guess the majority of users of an action camera aren't vlogging with them and experiencing the sound around a 360 degree is sometimes good thing. Don't get me wrong it is a good thing to make note of and talk about in a review. Just pointing out it depends on the use case. Either way it was a very good comparison.

Hello, how does the X4 with applied standard lens covers (applied in clean and dry conditions) perform in wet, rainy weather? Is there a seal arround the lenscover which stops moisture and fogging up or is this still a problem? That would be amazing to know, as i need to run my X3 without covers as they always fog up riding my bike in wet conditions making the shot unusable. Cheers😊

Overheating is a problem. I owned the RS-1Inch and it overheated within 11 minutes and then had a 45min down time while it cooled. Not useable. I returned it after 4 months of fighting with Insta360 to take it back. I have the X3 and haven't had overheating problems and would not be happy with the X4 overheating within 27 minutes. Thanks for covering this important issue of the X4. You're the best Ben.

Hi Ben, I want to thank you for all your insights. Umm, I do have a burning question, I am based in India and the only cameras available here are Insta 360 X3, Insta 360 X4, Theta X and Z1. In all years of experience, which camera would you recommend for the best quality virtual tours? I sincerely do not care about 360 videos, I only want amazing virtual tours. Please reply on two factors, one considering their price and the second considering their photo quality for a virtual tour.

Is there a browser type app for Mac to view 360 files maybe with a previewer as well? It's difficult to find old videos in a sea of files with just thumbnails. Thanks

I would not buy a new 360cam without your review. Thank you again for your honest work.

Hi Ben, I am still using my Xiaomi Misphere 360. I like the remote stick and I am only taking photos. However batterie is getting weaker and weaker. Is photo quality of Insta 360 x3 or x4 so much better than Xiaomi Misphere ? Or is qoocam 3 a better alternative ?

I'm happy you put this video up because now I've seen it I think the difference between the exponent X3 isn't enough to warrant buying another 360 at the moment but the one after this the X5 will be the one to buy I think I can miss out the X4 it's not that much better in my mind then the X3 is

Really the only reason I got the X4 is that there is no 30 min limit on recording. Now I can record my gigs without worrying about dropouts mid song.

@@adamthomas1222 any other Insta360 camera before this one? Ricoh theta v even used to be 5 min only which was stressful and often inadequate.

Thanks for a great review!😃 I wonder if the X4 feels faster than the X3? I think the X3 was a bit slow to process photos, and the interface was a bit slow.

I bought a x2 around a month ago (for holidays in Asia) because It was on sale and I was expecting the x4 to be out this summer. I will probably buy the x4 next year unless I can find an x3 for a very good price (sale or 2nd hand). Thanks for taking time to make a good review instead of rushing it to be first.

Great review and when watching quite a few, yours seems to be very honest. I already have the X3 and wanted to watch a real and honest review of the X4. Thank you.
