4:00 Ouch! His wife loved the line "I know". In that case she must love Harrison Ford, because he improvised that line from Lucas' dire "I love you too."! As a matter of fact, it's reported that Lucas was angry about the changing of his script.
@zoetropeguardian5 ай бұрын
The reason is he thought people would laugh at the "I know". I can understand why he felt that way as he doesn't really use one liners and tongue-in-cheek moments in Star Wars. They're very old fashioned in the 30's and 40's style. To his credit though he understood it worked after the first screening and had the moment reoccur with Leia saying it to Han in the next film. 🙂
@white-dragon44245 ай бұрын
@@zoetropeguardian Ironically, when he does try to be funny, as with Jar-Jar Binks, few people find him funny. Strange though, that he should, on one hand, hate it when people might laugh at the Mouse droid, or when Han said I know, but on the other hand he tries to be funny using giant pink bunnies! Also, she said she fell in love with Lucas when she heard that line, and it wasn't anything to do with him. It was Harrison Ford's line.
@zoetropeguardian5 ай бұрын
@@white-dragon4424 In fairness I can also understand these things from his view too. The mouse droid disrupts pacing for a brief moment and he just wants to get on with the next scene. He doesn't want to linger as Star Wars is meant to be a silent film and like a documentary. It's R2's story as he's relating it to the Keeper of the Whills for the Journal of the Whills. Jar Jar is also more akin to the fool in mythology. He's also like C-3PO. They're comic relief in fun ways that aren't making fun of people or that are cynical. That's what George wants to avoid as that has a more modern and ironic edge to it. I can see why he'd want that for kids as it's much more positive and promotes a certain self-esteem. As adults we tend to understand the nuances of these things more but kids don't.

We're both right. From the transcript of audio taken before filming: from the MAKING OF EMPIRE STRIKES BACK book. Ford: All I’ll have to do is shake the guy off who’s holding me and then Billy can say, “It’s alright.” Then I can walk over to him and the whole scene with him would be this: “Save your strength for another time, Chewie.” Kershner: “When the odds are better,” yeah. That’s alright. Ford: “When times are better.” But this part here … [refers to Leia-Han dialogue] … I’d just as soon … Kershner: No, no, no, I’m not going to do that. Ford: Yeah. Kershner: I’m not going to do it. [pause] “I wish I could have told you before.” Ford: I think she ought to just say, “I love you,” as I’m passing by her. Kershner: “I love you.” “Just remember that, because I’ll be back.” Ford: No, I- Kershner: Yeah, I’m just saying how it would go- Ford: If she said, “I love you,” I could say very nicely, “Yeah, I know. Don’t worry, I’ll be back.” Kershner: Yeah, you’ve got to say, “I’ll be back.” Ford: [laughs] But if she says, “I love you,” and I say, “I know,” it’s beautiful and it’s acceptable and it’s funny. Kershner: [laughs] Right.
