Thanks for all the comments below. I would like to add that the council's promulgation of the Theotokus wasn't new or a novel, for most of the early theologians believed that Jesus was the son of God, and thus Mary was the Mother of God.

I think it’s going to go a little slower than the New Testament series. He was doing two episodes a day back then so I think within a month he did every book. I think he’s going to do one every three weeks of the church council. This one could go all the way into the summer

I think it’s important to note and you know did this on your episodes on Mary, the idea of what we called the Marian Dogmas Was already seen in the early church. You can sit in the writings of the apostolic church fathers. So this council was more about solidifying that belief and announcing it as official church teaching by both the east and west

Plus I think it is important FOR ALL CHRISTIANS to know church history. so many protestants think their mega church was the beginning of the christianity. No link to the past at all. All they need is their bible and uptempo music. No idea as to who gave them the bible or the contribution of the one holy apostolic catholic faith did to give them the bible, but who cares! LOL

I'm curious to know when these ecumenical councils become more Western bishop-centric. Maybe Florence? It seems all the early ones, the 7 or 8 that the orthhodox agree with us on, are very eastern specific. Makes sense since the capital was over there and western europe during this time was in barbarian shambles
@thecopticmonk94233 жыл бұрын

I think I like Nestorius' refusal of the title the rest had given Mother Mary "God-bearer" with those profoundings of how it happened.He considered that Virgin Mary is not God bearer but a Mother considering what happened and said Jesus is both Divine and Human!! That's why I think most Protestants consider her not a Mother of God but like an errand girl fulfilling God's purpose. Bravo to this conflict that led to this Council. Thanks for tapping the roots of our faith.👌

Give the Virgin Mary the due veneration she deserves! The early church believed in her exceptional "full of grace" status. they just needed a council to rubber stamp what the majority church believed. Now it is dogmatic

As a subdeacon in Byzantine Catholic who grew up in a Dutch Calvinist tradition in my opinion it's important to address Marian Christology at Ephesus. Nestorian debate was triggered when Princess Pulcheria consecrated a church dedicated to Theotokos in Constantinople. She was inspired after her pilgrimage to Theotokos' shrine at Ephesus. Veneration of Mary as Theotokos is core and center in this debate not as mere periphery. First anathema at Ephesus was affirming veneration of Mary as Theotokos. St Cyril preached seven Marian homilies at the Council. He then closed the Council with an Akathist to Theotokos. The Council of Ephesus dogmatize veneration of Mary as Theotokos.

Was it just a coincidence that there was an enormous temple devoted to Artemis, a life-giving female deity, in Ephesus at the time? Theotokos seems like an accommodation as much as anything else.

Hi, why does council of ephesus canon 8 say this: Canon 8 condemned interference by the Bishop of Antioch in affairs of the Church in Cyprus and decreed generally, that no bishop was to "assume control of any province which has not heretofore, from the very beginning, been under his own hand or that of his predecessors […] lest the Canons of the Fathers be transgressed".[2] seems like n arguement against the papacy
