The jlc reverso probably the first purpose built sports watch. Still a classic. Perfect Art Deco flourishes without being overwrought and amateurish. Nice pics like that you also included a German watch and weren’t biased towards the Swiss.

Another master class in horology. Just ordered a condition zero blue dial GP Laureato from a reputable dealer I know in Hong Kong. Should have it within the week. Love the Genta lines. Yeah, it might be something of a homage to the Royal Oak and other Genta designed classics but I don’t care because I just like it and I dont need an AP on my wrist to feel secure in my own skin. I just love the integrated bracelet look and I love a textured dial. Last year I bought a Tudor North Flag and with the Laureato I’ll have two watches I really like for a fraction of what a decent AP Royal Oak would cost. I think you’re saving me loads of money but my wife disagrees..... but that’s another story altogether. Thanks again Bill!

Another great review Bill. That Parmagiani Tonda has really peaked my interest. I’m going to have to keep that one on my radar. As for JLC, I am really loving my Master Ultra Thin Small Seconds. For me it is like a little Ferrari on my wrist. Sleek,stylish and has a great engine. Thanks for introducing us to these entry level high horology pieces.

Dear Bill, You and the estimable Arthur Leyenberger both directed me to Parmigiani. I have a Transforma chronograph in stainless steel with a complex galvanized dial and a Kalpa Grande in 18k gold, both with exhibition backs, and love them. The Vaucher movements are exquisitely finished with amazing decoration. More importantly Peter Speake-Marin who both worked at Vaucher and then became a customer of Vaucher when he developed his own watch line notes that the Vaucher movement thoughtfully uses some ceramic parts so that the prospect of damage arising from delayed maintenance is minimized. The ceramic parts avoid metal upon metal damage is service is deferred or ignored. In answer to the question raised by your video of yesterday, this thoughtful approach to the carelessness of watch owners is a feature I greatly appreciate. Other high horology at a discount options include H. Moser & Cie Venturer Small Seconds manual wind watches in either rose gold or white gold which have a retail price of $19000 +/- trend down as low as $8200 +/- new. The availability of some of these large discounts may not be a forever thing as some of the brands gain better control and discipline over their distribution streams or the superiority of the offerings of these brands becomes more widely acknowledged and better known in the watch community at large. While mainstream Bovet watches (not the sport line) never dipped to an under $8,000 level, they did trend down to the under $15,000 level. Bovet‘ s showing in the Swiss awards competition for its extraordinary complications is likely going to elevate the brand among the watch community and help firm up the Bovet pricing structure. It is interesting to note that Parmigiani Fleurier purchased the rights to the intellectual property rights and Bovet trademark which had last been used by Favre-Leuba in 1950 after F-L acquired the Bovet assets in 1948 from Albert and Jean Bovet, significant watchmakers and patented watch technology developers. That Michel Parmigiani thought enough of the Bovet provenance to buy these rights which were held only from 1989 to 1990 says volumes Bovet’s history. Pascal Raffy was the ultimate purchaser of these Bovet rights in 2001. The entire history of just Bovet reflects that wheeling and dealing in the watch industry is not a new phenomena. Leuba family members had owned Bovet from 1901 through 1918. None of this has seemingly has anything directly to do with the topic at hand, great horological buys at a discount, but it really does. New owners come in to control of a manufacturer entity or a distributor entity or the entities experience financial stress. Inventory is dumped into the marketplace on a discount basis and this depresses prices for a certain period of time. While I do not know the details of why Parmigiani, Moser and Bovet became so relatively affordable, the investment group that took control of Breitling just completed a monumental dump of Breitling inventory. While Breitling is not a high horology brand, this pattern of dumping inventory and tanking prices is likely entrenched in watch brand history even among some of the high horology brands. The take away from your video is as follows: if one is interested in high horology, it is much more accessible than one might think. The prices of some high horology watch brands like Parmigiani and Moser get knocked down and as a consequence provide cost effective entry to high horology accordingly, But as your video clearly points out, entry to high horology is also provided from nondistressed watch brands like Jaeger Le Coultre who offer watches of serious technical merit and finishing like the Polaris or certain of the Reversos at very affordable price points.

Hi Howard, there's something in the water in Fleurier ... in addition to Bovet and Parmigiani ... Kari Voutilainen has his shop there too, and he once worked as a restorer at Parmigiani. Also part of Chopard Manufacture is in Fleurier- where they produce the in-house L.U.C movements. Keeping my finger off the H. Moser and Parmigiani trigger has not been easy...other than the ones I have. Their prices are low because they're not popular among the general watch-collectors / watch-buying citizenry. That's good for real collectors. Cheers, Bill

I really like the red dial and band they released last year. I will be adding a high horology watch in a few months. The hunt and deciding which one is the most enjoyable part of purchasing a watch. GIO is another amazing brand that is undervalued, I was able to pick up a Seventies chronograph and i really love it. JLC master class sector dial was another beauty that I was able to pick up, the JLC is so light and just fits on my wrist and looks better than a PP that i have that look similar.

Hi Bill, great watches, after your recommendation of the hebdomadaire, i can't find one with the discounted prices as before :) . I especially like the Glashütte Original and the JLC. I think also as great choices it would be VC Overseas especially the Gen. 1, also Piaget and Breguet entry level models are heavely discounted in the grey market. If i had my choice between on of these watches i would definitely choose the GO Panoreseve or Parmagiani Metrographe. Have a great Sunday. Best, Abdul

The other cool thing about the MCD with the 899 movement is that the caliber has been "autotractorized", i.e. modernized with unidirectional winding, ceramic bearings, laser welded hair spring, free sprung balance, etc. It's a modern technologically advanced movement that also stands on the heritage of the 889 movements and the other similar JLC calibers that made their way into high end watches form VC, AP, etc.

Great content. One thing maybe you could consider discussing in the future is more classically sized dress watches. As a guy with a ~6.25" wrist, I am regularly disappointed by the new dress watch releases at 40-41mm and feel much more comfortable with the sizing of my vintage dress watches at 33-35mm. When I look around I don't see many options for these smaller diameter thin dress watches produced today, while there are lots of great options if you go back ~10 or more years, like the Patek 3919 with its 33mm case or JLC Master Ultra thin manual with its 34mm case, outside of a few exceptions like the 35mm Lange Saxonia (I would consider the medium or classic sized reversos to be similar in proportion). It seems that once classic dress watch size of 33-35mm with 8mm or thinner case is pretty much dead unless you are okay with a watch clearly made for women like the diamond bezeled Piaget Alitplanos at 34mm. If you felt like discussing this or talking about some currently produced watches that you think suit this classic dress watch size, I would be very interested. For me a 36mm watch makes more sense for something like a datejust or day date not something in a dress watch style.

Hey Zzeuss, staying busy today for tonight's game too! Time flies when I'm busy. This is a strange Super Bowl-two teams that have major haters. The Saints will never get over that bad call! (Nor should they! Maybe some good rule changes will come out of it.) Everyone except the Pats fans hate the Patriots because they keep winning Super Bowls with an aging QB. Well, for us Pats fans, we'll just ride the wave as long as it lasts-they seem to have forgotten the 49ers of the 80s with the Joe Montana and Steve Young eras back-to-back and the Steelers dynasty of yore..not to mention the Cowboys under Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman!) So just for the first two decades of the 21st Century...it's the Pats! Cheers, Bill

@@watchartsci Today's game is played differently than the one played by the dynasties of old. High scores abound now and I think it will continue in the future. With the concern of players' safety and the CTE risk that is now in the minds of the league, we will see a more restricted defense. I expect more rule changes in the future towards that end. Another rule change is needed so teams can challenge calls, and non calls by the officials. The NO LA game was decided by the refs. That has happened too often lately. It will be interesting to see how the sport evolves, but I fear it will eventually become something more akin to flag football. I hope not.

Hey Bill, I have a question; if my collection was only a Glasshutte Pano, a Parmigiani Tonda 1950, a JLC Master Control, and a GP Laureato, I would be "near" or actually "high" horology collection? For me, it doesn't matter because I love each of your choices. Just wondering how a collection like that would be perceived. BTW, I am here in Atlanta for the game. Since I have no dog in this fight, the thought has crossed my mind to sell my tickets to help finance an F.P. Journe Souveraine. I don't own expensive pieces so I'm hesitant to sink that much into one piece. Perhaps a JLC 8 day Reverso and a Habring2 would make better use of money. If you were here, I'd give you a deal in exchange for your advice! The partys here are crazy! Redskins fans are enjoying ourselves because we know we won't be here as a team for years to come. #FireBruceAllen

Hey Red! What a quandary ... if you can get $20k for your Super Bowl Tickets ... that means you'd have to watch the game on TV like the rest of the country...easy one for me...seeing the Patriots in the SB is pretty routine for New Englanders...(cruel to say to a Redskins fan...I know) If I had $20k right now, I'd probably blow it on a Habring2 Doppel Felix and Cellini Rolex Prince with enough left over for a pre-owned Parmigiani Hebdomadaire ... but only if I didn't a FP Journe Chronomètre Souvrain already. Hi Bill, Great video since I am contemplating my first High Horology watch and you validated my decision to go with a JLC Reverso, and in my case a lightly used Grand Reverso 976. I have big hands and 19.2 cm wrists and while the Classic Large Small Seconds was originally my first choice, the Grand 976 at 30 x 48 mm is near perfect, plus I love the display case back. I'm seeing them in the $5K to $5.5K range and was wondering if this was a fair price, or should I try to get one for sub $5K, after all they are about 7 years old. It appears that this is a rather rare and sought after watch? BTW, I also have a Rolex GMT 16750 that I bought new in 1983 (yes I'm older too) and a Speedmaster Pro Moon, so this watch would give me in my opinion a near perfect luxury three watch collection. Let me know what you think.
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Curtis given your wrist size, and your budget, I would get a Parmigiani Fleurier Kalpa Grande XL instead of the JLC Grand 976. There's nothing wrong with the JLC, and I have great respect for both JLC and Reverso. (I got my wife one, and it's been an excellent watch.) However, neither of your current watches really reflect much about the watchmaker. The Kalpa was designed and formed by Michel Parmigiani and has a presence that is unique, functional and striking without being ostentatious. (And Michel is still alive & kicking!) The interesting thing about the Parmigiani Fleurier watches is that they often drop like a rock initially; but once the price drop has occurred; they don't drop any more-some have been climbing upwards. So if you got a $5k Kalpa, you could sell it for $5k-now that's an initial drop between $5-$8k from the original price; so you end up with a $10-15k watch for $5k. Anyway, I do like the Grand 976, but in looking at the ones for sale in your price range, they looked a bit stressed. On the other hand, I found some Kalpas for sale that had the 22k gold rotor with the barley corn guillochè pattern-( others had the tungsten rotor). Bill, a little about me... Pro pilot for 42+ years USMC, corporate and airlines, tool/aviation watch collector (I love GMTs, 15 watch collection). With regard to dress watches, I love rectangular. My Father had a Longines gold rectangular that my Mother gave him in 1954. I had an inexpensive gold tone Seiko rectangular for 25+ years until in was stolen in Jan. My current is an Oris Rectangular Complication, anniversary present from my wife. I've liked Oris since 1983, and love this large D/D, moon phase, GMT watch. Three grail watch wish list, Breguet Type XXI, Blancpain Fifty and PP Gondolo, this exact watch at JS... www.jomashop.com/patek-philippe-watch-5124g-001.html I believe that we have somewhat similar tastes since I know you like this watch too. Not a watch I was familiar with, but a stunningly beautiful design (BTW, I'm a trained Industrial Designer by education). I will be doing more research on this watch. Hi Curtis, for rectangular watches, I can recommend the H. Moser et Cie, Henry Double Hairspring ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3rSeYywidZjnK8 )-they're hard to find, but if you can (and the price is right), you'll have an amazing watch. Here's the video I did on Parmigiani Fleurier-kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHy1iX1nqLmipKc . They have great prices and I have a hard time keeping my finger off the trigger...even though I own two. In the late 80s & early 90s I used to own a Cessna Cardinal, flying out of Palomar, just south of Camp Pendleton ... where our avionics would act up. I flew with a group called, 'Liga: The Flying Doctors" and one of the pilots was a former Marine aviator who had flown everything from Corsairs to Phantoms ... great guy and lots of fun in a grumpy way! We had clinics in Sinaloa and the drug lords of that region left us alone because of our clinics, but the flights into that region were always interesting...even a little exciting at times. (Also flew with the 'Flying Samaritans' in Baja...where we had clinics as well.) Some of the pilots were professional-one flew for FedEx, and when we returned to the US, the eagle-eyed inspectors always hassled him for the number of cross-border flights he had! I finally had to give it up when I moved from San Diego to El Paso, Tx. Had my IFR rating and flying IFR was my favorite kind ... except in Mexico where the Nav aids were iffy ... but I used my backup IFR (I follow rivers!). Cheers, Bill

Hi Erik, I am forever confusing 'chronometer' and 'chronograph...' I say one and mean the other. Thanks, ... and you're right. Cheers, Bill

you seem to misunderstand the word affordable, thousands of dollars is not affordable, 500 dollars is affordable
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 5 жыл бұрын
Mr&Mrs Morrice, one could say that $500 isn't very affordable. What you need to understand is "relative" and "relatively'- it means in relationship to other watches or in relation to initial asking price. Take care, Bill
