Paddy, I am a bit disapointed by your take of the grand palace. 500 baht is a very modest fee for such an amazing collection of art, culture, and history. Every step brings you through the history of the kingdom. The murals depicting the Ramakien are majestic and the best I have ever seen, their preservation is outstanding. The entry also includes access to the Queen Sirikit Museum which has a beautiful collection of textiles and fashion, both traditional and modern. And finally that ticket price includes entry to a showing of a shortened version of the Khon at the Bangkoks historic Royal Sala Theater. To be fair the video feels like you have glossed over one of the most significant locations in Thailand. I hope you take the time to revisit it and can appreciate it with renewed perspective.

Sorry Dana no offense to the Grand Palace, I thought it was beautiful but on the grand scheme of temples in Thailand (and having seen my fair share this past year) I thought the overall experience wasn't that great. Beautiful buildings and artwork for sure, but personally I have enjoyed temples in Phetchabun, Nan, and Chiang Rai much more for their beauty and artwork, plus they were free to enter. Wat Pho for me was the best temple featured in this video.

500 baht is about $15. When I went to London, it was 16 pounds to get into Westminster Abbey, and also Tower of London, and also to ride the London Eye. I don't think $15 is too much to ask for admission to the even more amazing and spectacular sights you see at the Grand Palace. But I admit it is very hot-- I almost sun-stroked out at the Grand Palace. Wear a hat and bring lots of water. Wat Pho is pronounced with a hard "P' (as is the noodle dish by the way, it is not Fo it is Po). It is amazing also. Wat Arun is my favorite Wat in all of Thailand-- it is just majestically beautiful even if not as complex and intricate as Wat Pho. I make a special trip to Wat Arun every time I go to Thailand. The Golden Mount is not always full of prayer service. I went in the morning during the week and it was wonderful. There were no services happening, and the views from up top are amazing. As are some of the macabre statuary scenes as you come down the stairs. And then wander around the woodworking shops that are abundant in the streets in the neighborhood that surround the Golden Mount. There is some really wonderful woodcarving going on in that neighborhood. This is not tourist stuff, this is just actual streets of Thailand and it is an actual district of woodworking people. Avoid the traditional Thai dancing-- that is so phony and done for the sake of farang tourists. No one in Thailand actually dances like that, except for the tourists. If you want real Thai music that people really listen to check out a Joox Top 100 concert with the likes of Getsunova, Potato, Labanoon, Three Man Down, CD Guntee, Atom and other current pop acts in Thailand.

I watched your VDO till the end and wasn't going to make any comment But as you keep complaining about THB500 which is about £11 or $16 to get in Grand Palace and not worth it . Let me ask you did you really take time to look at all the details and beautifu of architecture ,culture I think some of the building you can go in and have a look inside or you just complaining about it's been so hot so you just rush through and can't be bother to walk around and appreciate what is in front of you. If you think THB500 is expensive what about have to pay nearly THB1,200 £25 to get in to see architecture, old building (National trust) or ruining Castle in England is it worth it?? I think it is because I appreciate and amaze with what I see and spend my time to absorbed the atmosphere. And I also understand that the money that I pay to get in is going to use to maintenance all the building and keep it for further generation to have a chance to see it as well. So I think you are bit narrow mind and exaggerate at this point and to be honest I was a bit disappointed with this VDO . I agree and don't like the different ticket price between foreigner and Thai I hated that system. Still support your channel but this VDO is not my favourite and not enjoy watching it. In my opinion, the Grand Palace is worth the 500 baht, for me the most beautiful place in Bangkok. You had bad luck on the golden mount, I was there already a few times but never had a ceremony and could visit easily

I think the grand Palace is a masterpiece. If you spend time to look through those details you'd find it's so amazing. It's something you won't see every day or replaceable by something else for the sake of saving 500 baht lol. My opinion anyway.

Foreigners think it's expensive for the 500 baht entrance fee, but what you see in the Grand Palace is the ultimate art. Thailand that combines the best technicians to do for the king And it's still over 200 years old. once in a lifetime as you will see It's still reasonable.

I really liked the Grand Palace but it was the first place I went when I landed in Thailand so it had a real wow factor. Not sure how I would feel now. Wat Poo I went the same day. Beautiful place. Must see sights. I also like the golden Buddha.

Bad call on the Grand Palace. It is fantastic. I was very fortunate to have an individual tour guide. And I went before covid so there were literally thousands and thousands of Chinese tourists taking pictures everywhere. As was I. The individual tour guide took me in the buildings and showed me much that I would have missed otherwise. One thing that you did not mention that you may have missed was the emerald Buddha. One of if not the best sites inside a temple that I saw. They will not let you film or take pictures. And they are serious about it. I saw them take one Chinese guys camera away who did not follow the rules. And to be honest you do not need to take pictures. The pictures of the emerald Buddha that they sell outside on postcards are excellent. They also sell cheap amulets resembling the emerald Buddha. There are many scenes and many buildings that make the Grand Palace very worthwhile but you really need a tour guide. If you miss the emerald Buddha it would be worth going back just to see that but again do not even attempt to film

Yes, 500 bahts is quite expensive when you compare it to other places in Thailand. Then it's only 15 US$. What would you get for this price in Europe or the USA? The closest thing I would think of, Versailles Palace, is 750 bahts to get in. And you're absolutely right, Wat Pho is really beautiful. You have to do it at the end of your day, because as Wat Pho hosts one of the most renowned school for massage in Asia, you can have very good traditional massages there for 260 bahts (1/2 hour)

The very first time I visited Thailand, a friend took me to the Grand Palace. She pushed me into the "farang line" at the entrance and she joined the Thai line. We met up inside. I agree with Thomas in Thailand about the "wow" factor re the Grand Palace -- It was my first Thai experience as well. The minute I stepped in, I gasped and had to sit down and absorb everything -- All the glitter -- I felt like I stepped into the land of Oz. I haven't been back since, but I do recall being able to go into some of the buildings around the palace, so the closures must be due to the party-pooper pandemic. (sigh) dcb

It's Wat PO, Paddy. In Thai transliteration, whenever you see an 'h' after the initial consonant, it just means that the initial consonant must be aspirated. On the other hand, and frustratingly so for learner's of the language, no letter 'h' after the initial consonant DOES NOT always mean that the initial consonant is unaspirated. That's down to a lack of a universal standard agreed upon by academics in Thailand on transliteration unlike, say, hanyu pinyin of China.

As far as I am concerned the Grand Palace is a must for BKK visitors. I guess if you're a backpacker on a budget it is expensive. As far as I know the king does not ever live in this palace these days. Maybe you were visiting on a holy day so some things were closed? Or perhaps Covid related closures. But I seem to recall being able to enter several of the buildings and there's a small museum near the entrance as well. The activity at the top of Golden Mount is not the usual thing - that's why I think maybe you were there on a holy day. Last time I was there it was very quiet at sunset

Part of the palace residence use to be open to the public. I am unsure why that part is not open now though. There use to be a museum of old artifacts and another area that showed very old spears etc that previously were used in old wars. @Paddy Doyle I recommend going to Jim Thompson house it’s very peaceful and interesting.

Pronounced Wat Po as in poke Paddy. Yes, Royal Palace should be seen at least once just like Big Ben. Maintenance costs at these attractions would be phenomenal, however, 500baht per person does sound high. Never feel like an inconvenience at a Buddhist assembly point, they really don't give a rat's whether you are there or not. I've learned the hard way.

Have done Grand palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun twice. Once on my 1st visit to Thailand and again when I went with my sister on her 1st visit. I think all 3 are worth doing and £12 for the Grand palace although expensive for Thailand is not that bad if you also take in the museum near the exit with loots of historic stuff on display. Just a note on the Golden Mount, If you suffer from vertigo as I do then going up is no problem but I suffered coming down as there is no hand holds on the side of the stairs that is away from the edge.

I went to Bagan, each entrance fee is 500 baht, which is the remains of a pagoda. It's good that we came with a tour, so we used a reserved package. and the weather is much hotter than Bangkok

It wasn’t a bad decision to skip the boat ride to Wat Arun. Though it’s a wonderful and breathtaking sight as seen from the river, its surfaces seem worn and tatty when viewed on the premises. Go there by all means if you’re enthralled by its mystique, but prepare to be underwhelmed.

In Thai words, an 'h' following another consonant is a signal to aspirate (put air into) the first consonant. Think Thailand - the h is silent. Then consider Pai, which has no 'h' so no aspiration- then the p almost sounds like a b.

When I was in Bangkok, I manage to see some temples. For me, Wat Pho was more of an eye opener better attractions than the other temples. I was there for a month in Thailand and I was able to see many beautiful temples and the food was simply excellent. Good job in showing Thailand beauty.... :o)

Yes mate, did 3 of them on one day 5 years ago but missed the golden mountain temple. I think i will do it this year. Googn dive 🤣 lol Wat Arun is my persanol favorite of the 3 i visited and i did eat lunch at the pier and went accros with the boat from Wat Pho. I remember i bought a bucket off Satang coins to put in the bowls at the biggist reclining budha ☺ and i remember more temples in Isan were i did the same. I liked Wat Pho more than the Grand Palace too. The "Ph" just means it's an aspirated P sound, not F. Also, Wat Arun and the surrounding neighbourhood have a nice laid back feel.

Golden Mountain Pagoda was thought to be the largest phra prang in the world and would be bigger than the phra prang of Arun Temple. but because it was built too close to the canal therefore collapsed in the middle of the phra prang because the log foundation can't bear the weight and the end of the reign of King Rama IV, the work was stopped and abandonedbefore being renovated in the King Rama V and then changed to the present form of the Chedi ( pagada ) instead

I went to the Palace in Nov with absolutely no one else around and was in and out in 40minutes having seen everything I wanted to see, and not having to fight the crowds to see it. It was so quiet I even had my photo taken with the local coppers. Was it worth 500bht? I wanted to see it and that was the cost to see it, so yes. Would I do it again...probably no. Now you will have to go make amends to the outraged punters by visiting the Ruamkatanyu Foundation and donating 500bht there to balance your karma or whatever.....

Wow. So many people hating on you about the grand palace. Don’t worry about them. It’s your opinion & you have been to so many temples. I thought it was an insightful video. As someone who will be in Bangkok in May, it’s good information to have.

I have been to Wat Phra Kaeo numerous times. It is incredibly beautiful and is an unavoidable desgtination in Bangkok. The cost is ridiculous and in a country of smiling friendly people, the employees at this complex are mostly miserable, unfriendly and look like they would rather be anywhere else. Wat Pho is worthwhile, and so is the golden mount. The best spot for panoramic photos as for wat Arun, it is a magnificent site ((and sight) but there is no need to g climbing around there. Thailand has so much to offer, it is such a shame wat Phra Kaeo al ways Ruins my mood

Comparing the price of a tourist attraction in your home country to one in Thailand makes 0 sense. Paddy is comparing the price and experience of an attraction within Thailand- where he feels this one is overrated/priced compared to other Thai attractions. A $15 pizza in thailand would also be crazy overpriced even though it is normal in the US. To be real 90% of tourist going to BKK is going to the the palace and will enjoy and feel is was well worth the money. I”ve been there twice myself- that’s an expectation as a short term tourist- we r fine spending more on vacation. However- i don’t get all the hate comments just because Paddy gives his opinion AND suggests other- cheaper and better value options.

Totally agree, Paddy. The Grand Palace is underwhelming, and 500 baht is ridiculous. The only reason to visit, in my opinion, is to check off a box and say you've been there. Wat Pho (Po, Paddy, PO), on the other hand, is definitely much better, has great atmosphere, and is very impressive. However, once you've seen Wat Pasorn Kaew in the beautiful, scenic mountains of Khao Kho of Phetchabun Province, all the other temples are less impressive.
