There was also saying of how Yang Guifei ended her life. There is also a saying that she faked her death, and was sent off to Japan because in Japan there is a statue of Yang Gui fei there. I think the ranking is should be according to this saying: "Chenyu lokyan, beiyue,xiuhua" Xishichenyu, zhaozunlokyan, dianchanbeiyue, guifeixiuhua" There were certainly more beauties in China, and the reason why they were chosen weren't simply because of beauty alone, but it was also ranked on the political influence they had during their period.

I really like that they make this interesting and easily understood by English speakers, but they still incorporate so much of Chinese history and language into it. I love how they mention the sayings and use the Chinese word for things along with the English eqivalent. And they do it in a way that isn't obnoxious or condescending. It doesn't feel like propaganda or preference over one side or another. Just informative and engaging. And the fact that the commentators speak perfect unaccented English, but are clearly well-versed in proper Chinese and Chinese pronunciation is a huge plus. Great video.

Ancient comment, but I just have to say that American English is not unaccented English. It's American-accented English, which sounds foreign to most native English speakers around the world, especially the rhotic r sounds, which don't exist in any other English language accents outside of North America, aka *one* place in this big, wide world. I see a lot of comments discussing things from the US as if they're the default, but the internet is a truly global medium. Of course, you can tell these folks are native English speakers or have native-level comprehension. I assume they were either born in the US or are Americans who migrated from China as young children. Plus, they speak very, very clearly. Some American English speakers are just as difficult to understand as some American folks find British English speakers. A Manchester accent *is* unaccented English in its own right, and a Cantonese speaker from Singapore may be English First Language but with an 'accent'. I think it's important to recognise this in the context of cultural education videos intended for a 'foreign' audience. As someone from an English-speaking country, perhaps what matters most here is the culturally-familiar delivery of the content. I personally have no issue with hearing accents different to my own, I realise that hearing a variety of accents, including on TV, is far more common where I live than in the US. At least from my experience of the US. Even newsreaders where I live may have accents. I know that if you're not used to it, it can be jarring, but in the context of content, all that matters to me is that the speaker is fluent.

The ancient Chinese take a very relativistic view of "beauty", remember "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". So the ancients decided that "objective beauty is defined by public opinion at the time of judgement", in other words the beauty of a women can only be measured by how much influence her beauty has on everyone else. These four ladies are chosen because they're so beautiful that they were able to destroy nations and sway the strongest of men just by being beautiful. An example: You lived 100 years ago, and every single person who lived at your time were completely blown away by your beauty to the point of willing to kill themselves just to see your beautiful face one last time. I live today, and about 50% of people who live at my time are willing to go to that extreme to see me, the rest of them agree that I'm beautiful but do not care as much. Beauty standards evolve, people in my era might take a look at you and say "oh that look is SO 100 years ago", and people in your era might take a look at me and say "OMG that's such a weird look, not beautiful at all", so the only "objective way" to measure beauty across time is to consider the opinion only at the point of judgement. And by that standard, you would be more beautiful than me because more people are mesmerized by your beauty and they're willing to give way more to "enjoy your beauty" than people at my time. In other words, you don't have to look at Xi Shi to know that she is beautiful. Because if 99% of the people who has ever saw her were dying to get a second glimpse of her or trying every desperate move just to look more like her, then by definition, she already IS objectively beautiful. And there are certainly no shortage of those types of stories about Xi Shi, to the extend that many many famous literal phrases spun from her legends.

Depending on which dynasty you are referring. Han Dynasty preferred slender women, so XI Shi would be that according to their beauty standards. Tang Dynasty on the other hand, preferred plump women and as Dan mentioned, she was confirmed to be curvaceous.

That was a great video. I feel I learned quite a lot. Please have an open mind concerning my creative thoughts. Having grown up in the US, I find Yi to be mesmerizingly beautiful... on camera. Her gorgeous exotic look plus her attractive mannerisms add together to cause me to write this tribute. Of all the young people I have seen expressing themselves on videos or other media, I would pick Yi as the most beautiful young American girl (acknowledging Chinese background, but consider that being American means having ancestry from somewhere else). Actually, Chinese were very tall in the ancient time. The Qin Emperor terracotta warrior figures were built around 209BC and they were based on the size of real soldiers. Their height vary between183-195 cm, from 6 feet to 6 feet 5 inches tall. That's freaking tall comparing to the other people during that time period. It may be the diet or too much internet, the Chinese getting shorter & shorter over time to the average height of 171cm or 5 feet 7 inches today.
