Passable American-English translations for "doch": 1. 'actually'; 2. 'simply' or 'possibly'; 3. 'actually'; 4. 'really'. 1. (a) "Doch, ich komme aus Deutschland" -> "No, actually, I do come from Germany". (b) "Oh, ich habe morgen doch Zeit" -> "Oh, I actually do have time tomorrow". 2. "Das kann doch nicht sein" -> "That simply can't be" or "That can't possibly be". 3. "Nein, ich habe doch Höhenangst" -> "No, I'm actually afraid of heights". 4. "Ah, komm doch mit" -> "No, really, come with us". "Ich habe Ihnen doch getsagt..." -> "But I told you..." or "Actually, I told you...". "Doch, Herr Sauer" -> "Actually, I did, Herr Sauer". "Hier is est doch" -> "And here it is in fact" or "And, actually, here it is" or "And HERE it is". "Ja, dann ist doch alles in Ordnung" -> "Well, then everything's actually ok" or "Well, then everything's ok then". "Bei dieser Unordnung kann ich doch auch nichts finden" -> "I actually can't find anything in this mess". "Ich bin doch nicht Ihre Putzfrau" -> "I'm really not your cleaning lady" or "I'm not in fact your cleaning lady" or "Actually, I'm not your cleaning lady". "Das geht doch nicht" -> "That simply won't do" or "That won't possibly work" or "You can't actually do that" or "You CAN'T do that". "Doch, das geht" -> "Actually, it will" (or "Actually, I can"). "Kommen Sie doch zurück" -> "No, no, come back".

This is super helpful. Like the first time this word actually makes sense to me. I was looking for replacement words (not just concepts) and this really makes doch make sense now. Thank you!

Doch, indeed! While DOCH is much more flexible, INDEED captures the meaning. However, in English it is seldom used in conversation these days, except when things get dramatic and the user is expressing indignation. Or, a school teacher, for example, wanting to impress a student might say: "Indeed, you should know the answer!" Emphatic, unimpeachable and personal, INDEED, like DOCH, makes a point of making a point.

um etwas beten = to pray for something (past part. = gebetet haben) um etwas bitten = to ask for something (past part. = gebeten haben) [I'm just a beginner, so I'm assuming maybe where she's from, they might actually use it the way she demonstrated in the video (or maybe it's an older/alternate way to say it?) but I just haven't seen it in the Barron's 501 German Verbs book (2016); however, in the Langenscheidt dictionary (1993), under the entry for "beten" it says: "v/i. (ge-, h) pray (um for), say one's prayers; say grace." Also, in the same dictionary, under the entry for "bitten" it provides: "v/t. (irr., ge, h): j-n um et.~ask s.o. for s.th or to do s.th."

This was one of my biggest points of confusion studying German.... this little tiny mystery word that would just kind of show up in sentences that I could otherwise understand simply by ignoring it. I even have a memory of asking German speaker *20 years ago* in class and getting an answer like they didn't really know.... something like "it's just there to make it louder" I had started to think of the work as a sort of underline, like "certainly" in English. The problem is it doesn't always work, because I've also seen it in context to work against what is being said. This explains a lot.

Summary 1. It reverts or counters a negative question or statement. kinda like "on the contrary" but unlike in English, doch can be inserted within the sentence easily. 2. Make a command or statement sound very impatient or angry. can't think of an equivalent in English. 3. An added expression when speaker assumes that the listener already knows the subject that is being spoken about. "duh" - for English, it usually has a negative connotation but I suppose in German it can be neutral (clarification?), unless it crosses into point number 2. 4. Softens the tone of an order and make it more convincing. "try" --> "you should try it/ try it" The video is great, please still watch it! Schauen Sie (doch) diese Video an (added doch so that I don't sound like a book or instruction).
