Matt, what a great joy it is to watch you again. I've been a diehard fan of your original videos for quite some time. In my opinion, it is easy to convince ourselves of a state of saturation, but there is always room on the web for people who are able and willing to educate in a concise and useful manner. I sincerely hope that you continue to make videos. However, I have an idea of the enormity of the task, so I perfectly understand if you don't. In any event, I hope you are able to bear in mind that it's quality, not quantity, in terms of viewership: I, like you, post videos that do not get zillions of hits, but I know that they mean a great deal to some people, and that is enough for me. On a particular note: while I appreciate your no-nonsense comments about preamps, I hope you don't expect it to necessarily make a difference. A quote from a recent political documentary sums it up: "Even if it were true, I wouldn't believe it." Such is humanity. Best wishes and thank you so much again :)

Thanks for your comment David. Very well expressed. One of my primary concerns is to encourage young people not to be intimidated by those who seek to be proprietorial about technology and knowledge in order to frighten them away. Unless you only want to reproduce the sounds of the past, all technology however modest is valid and has creative potential. Telling people their work is invalid unless they have a 1073 is about control. I hope in some small way that my videos empower people to do their own thing and that they help them to achieve the results they imagine. It’s always great to hear from people like you. Thanks 👍

Again, an other interesting video on this channel. And I subscribe+bell. I realy like your honnesty about "not hearing the difference". Either you and me are deaf, maybe, or someone somewhere want to sell us something expensive 😉 You use ADAT connexion and I've heard different things about the ADAT lightpipes. I'm thinking to expand the I/Os on my Apollo 8 in order to work more "out of the box" (and maybe use my old gear more, I guess you and me began our sound journeys almost at the same period, so we collected tools....) and an ADAT link is a possibility. Are you definitely happy with ADAT links? Is it convenient, transparent and stable?

In my experience ADAT light pipe is the most reliable interconnect over short distances providing you keep the cables out of harms way. Not subject to electro magnetic interference and cost effective. Supports multiple sample rates and word length. Thoroughly recommended. More here .. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2GceJqolseUi8k

Thank you, Matt. I truly enjoyed listening to your experiences and the journey you've been on as a musician and audio engineer. Your thoughts on the importance of preamps and AD/DA conversion makes a lot of sense to me. It was fun hanging out with you, sir. Looking forward to checking out some of your other videos. I got one of these akai 4000ds's. primarily intended to print my mixes through it, though it's been a bit of a hassle to keep it going... a while back, before I had any compressors I used a portable cassette which had a built-in ALC/limiter. mostly used on drums, anything else sounded too angular.

Hi Matt, I really enjoyed watching this video. I play drums at an amateur level in a 4 piece rock band. I've put together a 28 unit portable 19" rack on wheels with various key units going into 2 stereo patchbays. The desk is a Soundcraft Spirit Studio 16-8-2 and seems perfectly sufficient for us with 8 drum mics, 3 vocal mics, 2 guitars, 1 bass. I use the last 2 remaining channels for the left and right from an input such as my mobile phone for a metronome or to play music into the Line inputs. There are sufficient sends and groups to bus the drums, bus the vocals and to create headphone foldback and stage monitoring as well as the main PA speaker outputs for live performances. I would like to be abke to record the band live and also record in a studio setting with overdubbing options. What unit would you recommend to hook the analogue mixer tape send and return to a computer. DAW please? I'm happy to keep the sound analogue. In order to modify things and use plugins in the DAW, do you need analogue to digital conversion or can a simpler analogue interface suffice? I would like to record live gigs and also rehearsals to see what is happening with each instrument in terms of player quality and be able to create tracks to take away from rehearsal to reflect on as a band between rehearsals. Any advice would be really gratefully received. Here is what equipment I have. It is budget so I can start to appreciate what everything does at this stage. SOUNDCRAFT SPIRIT STUDIO 16 CHANNEL 8 GROUPS 2 MIX OUT analogue desk Behringer Ultragain Pre Amp (2 channels for each main vocals) and alternatively for DI use on guitars if needed. Behringer Multicom Pro for gating/compression/limiting (4 channels for Kick Drum, Snare, Drummer vocals, Bass Guitar). Behringer Composer Pro gate/limiter/compressor/de-esser/peak limiter (2 channels one for each main vocals) Behringer Virtualised 3D for reverb and vocal effects on Aux 1 send and FX1 left and right returns Behringer Sonic Exciter normalised to Mix Insert Behringer Powerplay 6 headphones amplifier for monitoring Behringer Ultragain 2 channel 32 band eq normalised to mix out from desk. 2x Behringer Ultrapatch 24 line balanced patchbays What is missing to be able to record into audacity or another DAW please? Thank you :-) Thank you.
