Be your authentic self. 1. The mechanic: Action + body part + direction = alignment. E. G. Relax the forehead on the mat. 2. The doctor: anatomy. 3. The magical creature: metaphors, flowery. E.g. as if... 4. The storyteller: relating to the class' theme. E.g. Questions, like a conversation. 5. The therapist: body sensations, feelings. E.g. Notice what that feels like / What emotion is coming up? Thank you!

The humorist/comedian! Probably a combination of the ones you mentioned. They make the class lighthearted with jokes and amusing images as cues.

There are also different styles in adjustment. The mime - will stand in front of you and try to show you the right pose by example. -The politiccian- will verbally guide you towards the right posture, The cuddly care bear- Will gently lean their body into you while pushing you in the right position. And the Chiropractor - will use whatever means necessary to get you into the right pose. I've never expienced that last type, but I've heard about them in particular some Indian guru's have that tendency.

Haha! Love your Mission music. :D Well, I would say I'm rather a magical story-telling, mechanical, therapeutic doctor kind of a yoga teacher. Depends what phase of the moon we're in and what I've eaten that day. :)

I’m definitely a mix of mechanic and therapist! Definitely more mechanic in a vinyasa class and more therapist in a yin class. Thanks for breaking this down, very helpful!

I’m definitely very drawn to anatomical/mechanical cues also being a physical therapist and obsessed with movement. I am trying to incorporate more metaphoric cues intermittently to add some imagery to practices. Fun to see how we evolve over time.

Hi Ashley, you have put out many wonderful videos and I have learned a lot from them. Thank you! I was, though, disappointed by the rather limited description here of different yoga teaching styles. I can appreciate that it’s your video and freedom to describe how you see them. To be fair, the terms, “Magical creatures” (someone changed it to Poet) and “Therapist” trigger resistance when there are actually lots of benefits. I moved from years of Hatha yoga practice to Kundalini at first because my beloved teacher did (Kundalini, in which teachers have mature and healthy relationships with themselves and their students) and would consider such yoga „styles“ as useful for awakening awareness of the whole self in all its nuances, including our relationship to the mind. Many people do not connect with their bodies, lack recognizing emotions and the sensations they produce in the body and can’t self-regulate because of this lack of recognition. This type of yoga can be “therapeutic“ but I don’t see a connection to a therapist. It’s more about making your own discoveries with the help of your body, and cues from a teacher, to recognize what is within you that you had never before been directed to see. Nowadays this is called Somatic therapy, which stems from yoga. Maybe Somatic style fits well. 🙏😊

I think you have touched on all of them to be honest- I am just starting out and feel I am a mixture of all but leaning mainly towards magical creature and therapist though honestly I have a small measure of all that you mentioned. If I try to intuit other times it seems to be incorporated in one that you have already mentioned. Is it okay to be a bit of all of them or better to hone in on one to know yourself as a yoga teacher in time? I also feel like the style of yoga being taught really inferences and influences which one you may lean more towards. I feel my advice would be whichever one or ones you feel you identify most with, as long as it is natural and not forced and even experimental in a fun kind of way it will come across cohesive, congruent and genuine.

hello i am experienced but have some blocks / fear around the internet AND around changing my teaching style. my teaching style is 100% By Demo even with my in person classes. That is what i thought thia video may address... ie: getting off that mat and physically assisting your students and or how do you see the members of class when teaching by demo virtually? or do you not teach by demo virtually so as to study whats happeninmg with the students postures? I find i am able to successfully see and correct verbally by demo in person BUT i teach 5 to 20 people at a time only and it tends to be 5 to 10 so i demo the ENTIRE class. i wish i was able to walk around the room or stand in one spot and just speak my class BUT i never ever have in 10 + years of teaching yoga. i teach vinyasa flow style , power style and of course beginers or what i would call "to the room" you know, to the peolple that present.

I could recognize myself as a mechanic, sometimes even a bit dogmatic, so focused on the alignment and talking too much about it. But I do focus on therapy and anatomy as well. Magic and storytelling is just not my thing but I think people appreciate my efforts. I think they are having fun because it just sounds so ridiculous when I am trying to describe two elfs pulling their arms from the side or the fairy pulling an invisible string through the crown of the head. It is just so clumsy and awkward when a mechanic is telling magic stories. haha
