Is there a way to bias releasing the iliacus vs psoas by stretching or manually?
@creativestrengthcoach

I agree on every part but i think in most cases long static stretches (holds) before training is not the best idea. Legs may feel like spaghetti for example before back squat training and it may decrease performance. I think there may not be control and stability in the 'new' range of motion after those holds. Its still not so simple IMO because i got my full jefferson curls with bigger weigths doing those static stretches for behind the knee. It may also be benefical to do thing like static thoracic spine opening before squats and get those squats done better but on that case one is not stretching the main muscles which are trained.

Yes, you can bias releasing it with both stretches and self-massage. I've got lots of those options in my 45-day "Hip Flexor Flexibility" program on GotROM.com

I had an injury to my hip from ultimate frisbee at 37. It gradually progressed to a really tight hip, weak hip flexors and glutes at 47. Extremely painful after a workout. Couldn't walk ok... Had an x-ray in November and my socket was compressed but other wise ok. Using distraction and lots of exercises including kettlebells and goblet squats to strengthen the area. Recently had some big improvements. Can't believe I'm getting better! I'm 51.

Thank you. Very informative. Only one thing I do not quite agree that you can't get very flexible with the static/yogic stretches.

Hey shane, What about stretching your hamstrings if you have an anterior pelvic tilt?
@GotROM
@GotROM 4 жыл бұрын
Theoretically, you'd want to do the opposite (strengthen hamstrings + stretch hip flexors). Of course, it always depends on HOW much you stretch them and how you keep everything in balance. Do you have A.P.T? Have you seen my 30-day "Hip Flexor Flexibility" program? It's specifically designed for APT. Hope that helps!

As long as you do some hamstring strengthening (RDL's, back extensions, deadlifts) you'll be fine.

You can break a muscle but usually not by stretching but by overexertion. I know of someone who tore his bicep in two by lifting something way to heavy. Once torn in this manner it is not surgically fixable .

"Tear" is usually the term used, rather than "break", no?

I was doing long hold passive stretching for long periods everyday for a long time and my progress was limited. I've recently been doing ballistic type stretching and I've made more progress in a shorter time.
@GotROM

Awesome! It's definitely a potent technique! Are you doing our 45-day Ballistic Stretching program? Or just some exercises you found online? Either way, don't forget to include a little targeted tissue work to prevent overstraining those hammy attachment points!

I'm personally a little more mindful when stretching cold. No reason NOT too...just might not have as much elasticity and joint lubrication, so don't go for your DEEPEST middle splits right out of bed. :-)
