@@cocoono11 I can tell you, every week I consider making the video on her; I am just unsure of how to do it. How to go about the format of a person who disappeared for several decades; I have taken notes on her and keep meaning to get to her, and I will this year. I just get stuck on doing a long deep dive, with very few photos, or a shorter 15-20 minute one. Another lovely biography. It’s interesting and often quite amazing to learn of the interconnectedness of people, how tiers of class, career, social life can intersect leading to lives not even dreamed. Good afternoon enjoyed another of your works. Very interesting the life of Silvia Ashley. I summarized that all 5 spouses were not her type but fit the bill. Not that easy anymore. It sure makes me wonder "where was I in my youth? "I sure was not at the right place nor the right time" one husband is not enough 😂. I remember those screen star legends: Sanders, Gable, Astair, etc but since I was a kid their personal life was not of interest to me, and here I learn years later Sylvia Ashley was one of Gable's wives (I did know about the affair with Ms Young, my mom told me). I think it was easier in those days to meet men that would boost your career and fill your pockets along with status. Sorry she could not have children, might have made a difference. RIP Sylvia Ashley.
@MythicMindScape212 ай бұрын
Yes, it is amazing that she had all of those men fall for her; sign over all their property, and already being a millionaire still got alimony from Gable. It is hard for me to judge women of those times, as what options did she have, and as you mentioned she was unable to have children; yes that might have changed things for her. She did deeply care for her nephew and treated him like a son. But I am unsure she ever found happiness.
@lemorab1Ай бұрын
I just discovered your channel and have begun watching the deep dive into the life of Lady Sylvia Ashley. I grew up in North Hollywood, not far from the Gable ranch on Petit Ave. in Encino. During the 1950's and especially after Gable's death on November 16, 1960, Lady Sylvia was seen as a shady gold-digger who took advantage of the still-grieving Gable. She had the audacity to clear out and redecorate Carole Lombard's bedroom, heretofore preserved in the exact state when Carole left it for the last time to go on her ill-fated War Bond tour. Sacrilege! It cost Gable a bundle to get out of his marital mis-step with Lady Sylvia, or so the story went. This was very interesting. Before your video, the only flattering description I have ever read about Lady Sylvia is in David Niven's memoirs. Just one minor quibble: In the United States, before the 1940's, a college degree was not beyond the reach of American Women, nor was it unusual. Many women, not from rich families, went to college. State colleges existed and were affordable. In England, for Sylvia, it was probably much more difficult given the rigidity of the class system. But then, she doesn't seem to have been intellectually inclined.
@MythicMindScape21Ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment. David Niven is an interesting character as well, and yes it is astonishing that Gable had to pay alimony to her, when she was so wealthy at the time.
@lemorab1Ай бұрын
@@MythicMindScape21 Her name was mud. King Clark Gable owned the 1930's and if the press thought you had wronged him, you were cut no slack. Ditto in the 1940's. Rhea Langham, Gable's second wife was forever shaded, perceived as standing in the way of True Love between Gable and Lombard. (The lengths to which Louis Mayer went to cover up any scandals involving Clark Gable would be unbelievable by today's standards.) After her divorce from Gable, Lady Sylvia was known to be baffled by the ill will she seemed to find everywhere she went for trying to "replace" Carole, and for taking Clark to the cleaners.

This was an amazing story. What did this woman have to attract and marry all these men? Maybe it was her beauty, but she must have had some thing I wish I had! Oh course she was a gold digger, but that's how women got ahead in those days Your videos are so fascinating, and your voice and soft music adds an extra smoothness to them. Your research and subjects are interesting and well done. Would you consider Edith Cavell, the WWI English nurse who was executed for espionage? Also Edna Vincent Millay, the poet; there is a great biography of her, "Savage Beauty". Lesser known women are fun to hear about.
