A timely video. I was just thinking about adding some community fish to my existing Discus tank.

I think you will do fine. Just make sure you quarantine before adding. Good luck.

Love this video. People ask me all the time if they can add a school of fish to their tanks and I always tell them Tetra's or Guppies. Tetra are the more class act since they come from the Amazon River Basin.

You are correct and that is where I would start. Black Neon's look amazing.

I recently after keeping African Cichlid tanks for 20 years switched over to Discus. I have the discus in my 135g show tank. Right now I have 7 4"-4.5" discus. Ordering another 5 next week. Water parameters are all correct for discus. I thought they would be calmer but they are chasing and competing for hierarchy just as much as my adult Africans were. I'm might even have to separate a few. I know they are a type of cichlid but wow.
@aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto Жыл бұрын
Wait and see when you add the other 5 if that stops. I have been told that 10 Discus in a tank will stop that. I have little or none of that going on. Also where is your tank located in your home? Sometimes hiding them away in a non traffic room creates that environment. Keep them out in the open where they are forced to focus on the things outside of the tank. That works for most people.
@timsgarage1861 Жыл бұрын
@@aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto Yes I'm hoping adding 5 will help. Helped with the Africans. The tank is in a main part of the house. Its a big tank for just 7 I believe.

I had 6 5 inch Blue discus in a 75 gal, I added 30 Cardinals! The discus hunted down the cardinals by the time I was able to save 19 cardinals from the tank. Surprised and in my Altum Angels tank , three of them hunted my 10 rummy nose down to 3. I don’t know why the fish hunted and ate the tetras, but I was surprised. First time I that happened in 40 years of keeping discus and angels.
@mydiscusobsession35602 жыл бұрын
That is very strange. I have never seen that or heard that before unless they were guarding a recently laid egg clutch? That is all I can think of.
@aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto2 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with the other reply from "My Discus Obsession. Perhaps they were threatened by the fish while guarding eggs. I can think of no other reason? I have been keeping the five I mention in this video for years with full size Discus and nothing like that has ever happened?
@aquariumparadise96522 жыл бұрын
Like the others have said. I have no idea hat would cause that behavior. Discus are not aggressive in that manner usually. Were these Hybrid or wild may I ask?
@garyt64792 жыл бұрын
@@aquariumparadise9652 My fish were bought as F1 blue discus 3 to 4 inches. I have had them in the 75 gal for 5 years, they have grown to 5 inches. No breeding occurring. Aside from catfish with 2 ancestris pleco it has been a just the discus. I decided to add cardinals then the discus attacked them. No explanation or understanding why. I have another tank with large wild heckles, they have left the remains cardinals alone.

What tetra is in your tank yellow with the red tail? Lemon tetra?
@aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto Жыл бұрын
Yes those are Lemons!
@jimmyrobertson95632 жыл бұрын
I would stay away from the neon tetras in a discus tank. Cardnail tetra are a much better choice IMO. Discus like warmer water 84 to 86 degrees. In my experience neon tetras don't adapt to the warmer water like the cardinal tetras and the rummynose do.
@aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto2 жыл бұрын
I keep both Neon, Cardinal, Rummy Nose and Black Neon's all at 87 degrees and have not lost any. Raise the temp in your Discus tank by one degree every 3 days until you reach the desired temp. They will do fine. My experience is clean water and when doing water changes to get the water within 1 degree of temp already in the tank to keep fish healthy. Also add an air stone as this will increase oxygen by a lot.
@jimmyrobertson95632 жыл бұрын
@@aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto Well I can tell by what you said that you know what you are doing. I myself run 2 airstones and due 40 to 50% water changes weekly and lastly I add water back into the tank at the same temperature as well. Have a good night.
