agreed, vox and fender should be on this list, but so should Line6. They revolutionized amp modeling and TO THIS DAY are still revolutionizing modeling. They are kings of making digital sound analog. Maybe not in the 90s but they started it. Even today, look at Helix.There are other companies trying to do this as well and yes some are good (Zoom, digitech, etc) but not like line6 does it...

Well, I mean it’s all just opinion at the end of the day and his list isn’t wrong but I just think iconic I think “voice of a generation” which he had two of them in there with the plexi(60’s-early 80’s), jcm800(80’s- early 90’s) etc. but not having the recto(which the 5150 is definitely deserved of the list) on there is kinda off base and definitely still what you wanted over the line 6 back in the day. Even the fractal or Kemper would be iconic... again in my opinion. A Diezel VH4 is arguably groundbreaking but not iconic by any means. There is just sooooo many amps for there to ever be a definitive honestly. Still a cool video with some neat trivia.

Wow, what a great video. Bold but reasonable choices here. I remember being a teenaged guitarist in 2007 and scrimping my snow shoveling cash to get a Spider II combo amp. It was, at the time, a pretty big deal--although wiser guitarists decried its lifeless sound. I got a lot of great tones out of it but what made it a great entry-level amp was the wide variety of tones it gave me without any gymnastics. I instantly had a serviceable blues sound, hard rock, classic rock, clean, and metal tone. In the early 00's there was nothing like it. I graduated to vintage Fender and new Marshall stuff but the Spider whetted my appetite for a wide range of tones.

i am really digging my 6505mh, and my brand new ,bought today horizon devices precision drive, thanks for the reviews fluff, i agree the sound of metal has gained something big with the 5150, and its the price, affordable. i think sometimes people forget that the amp is just a starting point for you and your tone, if you like hard rock/ metal i really don't think you'd be dissatisfied with that amp. makes me wonder what bands like metallica would of sounded like through that amp, not sure if they ever used it. pretty lucky to be in the 5150 generation. and the precision drive kicks ass. majorly happy i picked that up, sounds awesome through my 6505mh. wish you the best fluff

the local metal bands here in my area back in the late 90s/early 00s you either saw a 5150 or a Triple XXX head on top of a 4x12... a few outliers running some kind of combo amp (either something like a line 6 spider, or some random clean combo with a pedal)

Great review Ryan Bruce! I have owned 3 of your top 5. I still own a 50 watt JCM 800 that I bought in 1984, really beat up now and totally stock. don't mess with success! Still have a spider 2 in my practice room for when someone comes over to jam around. The Tiny Terror I bought a while back and have since traded it in for a Hughes And Kettner Grandmiester 40. Great piece of kit. I chose the granmiester over the EVH lbx lunchbox head only because it has no line out for recording. Keep up the great vids, this 61 year old from Canada says so! TC

5. Mesa Dual Rec 4. Peavey 5150 3. The Marshall stack (JCM or Plexi) 2. Fender Twin 1. Vox AC30 I dare you to name amps more iconic and influential than those. The Tiny Terror started the mini amp craze, sure, but the AC30, Plexi and the Fender Twin started electric guitar music. Period. What those amps did for electric guitar music, the 5150 and Dual Rec (and to a degree the Marshall JCM line) did for heavy music.

Line6 anything is a damn joke. I remember being in a local music store for the unveiling of the first amps of this company. It was disappointing then, and they are still to this day, as digital is still not equivalent to analog. It never will be in terms of power and clarity. Simply not gonna be possible until a time where nobody plays guitar anymore, so it will be moot by then.
@Cam_B
@Cam_B 6 жыл бұрын
Caius Madison You are totally wrong. They have come a long way with software modeling (i.e. Helix). They were the first to really revolutionize analog to digital sound in software modeling. Yeah sure, maybe a spider sounds like shit now but it was relevant in the 90s. Don't get me wrong, I will always prefer my valve amps to digital modeling BUT the new digital stuff from them sounds damn good today. Stop drinking the "line6 sucks" kool-aid, they are the best at what they do.

Rev. F, another but a bit off the beaten path but huge sound I had for a while during the grunge years when I played with One Eyed Jacks in San Francisco was the Sunn)) Model T100 and Wow the power that amp had. Very good & thoughtful list - more aptly titled the most important amps in modern guitar. (btw Sorry for the long post) I think you'd be surprised to find that the average Fender amp was more influential to amp gurus than the JCM 800. Mesa/Boogie, Soldano, Metaltronix, Rivera & more were known for modding (or queuing off of) Fender amps, as Fender was more affordable & accessible and the perfect pedal amp of the 80s. EVH loved his 6L6-based Soldano so much (an amp clearly derived from modded Fender circuitry) that Ed had Peavey build the 5150 from it. Peavey, of course, was a direct competitor to Fender in C&W and southern rock. As much as I love the JCM800, it really is a modded 2203/2204 (or 1959/1987 w/master volume). The JCM800 was always behind the curve and its many versions over the years were in response to the mods being done to JMPs & Fenders. The ultimate proof of this "catch-up" strategy are the Jubilees, which finally!! incorporated the prevailing amp mods of the day. Now, there's no question that Marshall had an advantage from a brand perspective, but most of us old shredders were past the Marshall name and were after killer tone & sustain that even stock JCMs were unable to achieve. Soldano, Metaltronix & the venerable ADA MP-1 captured that

as someone who was chasing JCM800 tone for years - built up a collection of pedals, multi FX's, peavey's etc... in the end I bought one... Most tripping thing about the amp is that makes a Stratocaster sound very much like an SG Gibson (AC/DC) - it's constantly tripping me out on "but how? it's not supposed to be like this". Other interesting fun fact about the JCM800 is that it can "crunch". Crunch out of this is just something else, is raw, it's like sharp, really high attack. Awesome amp only regret is I didn't buy one sooner.

So many amps could be on the list I have to add two the Fender HRD and the VOX AC30, these are staples of backline for either side of the pond, for a while every british festival or TV appearance seemed to have an AC30 and it has been used on sessions of so many great rock records along with the Fender Deluxe Reverb. In Australia it seems so much backline is either a JCM800 or 900 and a Fender Hot Rod either Deville or Deluxe. They were so many peoples first proper amp and are great. I agree with the Marshalls and the 5150 whole heartedly.

This was a very honest review based on historical significance and price point. You failed to give the Marshall JMP 2203 credit which is the predecessor of the JCM800.

I had a Line 6 Spider Line 2 Combo. 2x12. Damn thing was a beast lol That was way back in 2010 too lol Now I use two amps. Boss D katana 1x12 50watt amp, and a BlackStar HT stage 60 2x12. Love both amps.

Good list, I think it needed a little Mesa triple rec though

JVM410H, 5150, Rockerverb, JVM205H, and Marshall Plexi. Maybe not the most iconic amps but those are my favorites. (Haven't owned a JVM205H or Rockerverb but I've been around em enough to know)

I agree with all your choices and reasons I just would have added a #6 the dual rec has to be in there somewhere because there was a several years gap between the jcm and the 5150 that was filled by the dual rec it was in my opinion the first commercially available “modern high gain amp”. As a side note I remember being in American Music in fremont watching Jerry Cantrell demo one in the loud room it was very cool I don’t know if he brought it but I remember him being very impressed

Solid list! Personally I would have fit a mesa boogie in there, either the dual rec or the Mark IIC+

awseome list, i never looked at the JCM800 like that, tbh it's not my fav amp to play but i know alot of my fav songs have the 800 all over them...honorable mentions should be the Dual rec (no explanation required) the Diezel VH4 as i understand it was one of the 1st amps to have multiple channels & could pretty much do anything & was leagues ahead of it's competitors at the time (ok.ok, it's my fav amp..still to this day), & i'll add the current digital trend, i now use a kemper & it's definitely a game changer. Naturally the Vox's & Fenders deserve a spot on the list as well the legendary JC120

Bro Peavy 5150 or 5150 II are in my opinion the most iconic amp ever, the tones and tightness of the amplifier makes it iconic and the albums that were made with those same tones

Peavey bandit....oh the memories of that ultra fizzy distortion and trying to play pantera lol Plus popping the volume to get the amp to work again ... 90's life!!! haha

I started with a Peavey Special 130 - really didn’t have enough to keep up with a loud drummer in a small room so had to push it way past it’s sweet spot.

Can't forget the Fender Princeton! Helped kickstart Mesa / Boogie when Randall Smith was doing mods. Where would we be without the Mark series or the Recto today?

Slash from GnR didn't actually use the JCM800 - he used a Jubilee, primarily until he had his signature edition - which was essentially a Jubilee reissue.

The Dual Rec, JC-120, Fender Twin, and AC30 would probably make up the top 10 IMO. Roland Cube in 10th?

I have a Wilder half stack that I got from a friend who’s grandfather had it in storage for decades. I think it was made in 1970. It has a rotating horn in it. It still works! Any thoughts about Wilder amps? I tried to find info about it, and there is hardly anything out there. Do I have a rare gem? Or is it nothing really special?

Tiny head still shock people. I always gig with my triple rect and oversized 4X12. And one day I got a Jim Root terror used and had to play it that same night. And I got more complements using an amp that every one underestimates being a 15watt rather than what they expected with a 150watt head.

I have to say that an AC-30 belongs on every Top 5 list. Also have to add a Fender Twin Reverb. There's a reason that universally across the world, rental backline equipment is standard issue with a Fender Twin Reverb. It has allowed musicians to play almost anywhere while just touring with a guitar and a pedal board. Everyone knows what they are going to get when they get to a gig. The Twin is loud enough to fill a hall without being mic'd up, is clean enough to play loud and clean, and accepts pedals as good as just about any other amp out there. And did I mention that they are virtually bombproof, and very straight forward to work on, if needed. For that reason, I'd have to put The Twin as #1.
