The only time I've truly enjoyed a White Elephant was watching the adults at my church play when I was 10 years old. It was a true White Elephant (random stuff in good condition that nobody wanted anymore) and while stealing was allowed, no one could unwrap anything until the end. The most stolen gift was what looked like a tiny treasure chest but turned out to be a decorative mini-mailbox, but the uproarious laughter at each steal & then reveal is what I will remember the most ❤

White elephant means something totally different here! (Australia) schools run white elephant stalls where we take all the things from our house we no longer want then other people buy them with the funds going to the school. Books and toys are usually the most popular items with most items being sold for under a dollar.

a white elephant sale is the same in the us as in Australia. But this is a white elephant gift exchange. There is always a gift that everyone wants and it gets "stolen" over and over again. @karenogush56223 жыл бұрын
I've been to many of these over the years and I've never seen anybody get angry, start yelling, ruin friendships or relationships, etc. Maybe I've just been lucky. I've seen gag gifts re-wrapped and brought back subsequent years when the party is an annual thing amongst a group of people. The trick is to try to disguise it so nobody knows which one it is. I didn't mind ending up with it, because then I didn't have to worry about what I was going to bring the following year. My favorites I ended up with were season one of True Blood, since I was dying to see it anyway (and then got hooked). The gift I brought that was stolen the most was an old stuffed purple frog with a crown on it's head (we were downsizing our stuffed animal collection that year) -- and this was among a group of people 60+ year olds who wanted it for themselves (not a grandchild). The funniest gag gift that was stolen and "fought" over the most of any of the parties I went to was at an office party of mine back in the 1980's. We were a bunch of single nerds in our mid-late 20's to early 30's. Someone brought a Brooke Shields Doll with Intimate Apparel. I never saw a group of guys fight harder for a White Elephant Gift! But it was all in fun, nobody was truly angry. It was kind of creepy in hindsight, but still fun at the time.
@sandpiperr15 күн бұрын
Seriously! White Elephants at my former work apparently became a point of contention after I left, because of people getting butthurt about not feeling they got a fair gift. Which was baffling to me because I never took a White Elephant personally! The whole point is you don't know who your gift is going to, so it's not like anyone is being intentionally slighted. And, yes, I've left White Elephants with gifts I didn't really like. Once it was a bottle of Jaegermeister (which I hate!) and the other was a sketch book and colored pencil set (I can't draw for crap!). I just gave the Jaegermeister to my roommate and re-gifted the sketch book and pencils to my mom who does draw. It's really best to treat it like a grab bag, except more entertaining as a party game.

@nestfeathers883 жыл бұрын
Some people are no fun! The whole point of these kinds of parties is to hang out and have a laugh, not to expect a fabulous gift you actually really hoped for. Stealing gifts is absolutely part of it and makes it funnier. In our group we allow 2 steals, then the 3rd owner of the gift keeps it/it's locked in. We do all try to bring things that are decently nice, or useful but hilarious. For example, a hilarious mug filled with chocolate or something else desirable, funny shaped cookie cutters, nice but funny printed socks, etc. I once brought a cow yoga calendar and it actually got stolen from the original recipient 😂. You never know what people will end up liking. And it's not meant to be a serious thing.

I absolutely hate white elephant gift parties. I hate getting gifts that I don’t want. I hate the stress of knowing I am expected to steal someone else’s gift when I don’t want to. I hate the idea of a gifting party where some one takes the gift that you want, that the whole point of the gathering is to take a gift from someone or give a nasty gift to someone. I hate that it’s a friend event. I hate everything about it. You learn things about people that you should never know and then you have to hangout, work with, or worship with them later. Krampus themed tea towels, playing cards, a blanket, wine with a DIY Krampus label but really anything you can find) The person who draws number one, gets the Krampus basket! It's sort of the consolation prize for being the first person. We have a limit of 2 steals on any gift and the person who gets Krampus is responsible for bringing the Krampus basket (filled) the next year.

So, Up until recently we had a lovely holiday gift swap. Gifts had to be homemade ore regifted. The homemade gifts were often incredible and often there was hard core strategy with various family members working it. My daughter started when she was a lot younger and we had a gift plant for her, a ballet costume. She got stuck on a tin of cookies but did eventually give up the cookies for the costume. She also kind of wanted the wine glasses, they were so pretty. It helps if the crowd is on the same page but I have seen some crazy out of control gifting parties. We call them a Yankee swap here in Maine. There was another crowd that I did this with and a velvet painting appeared one year, that one kept going for a few years, often disguised. They can be fun, stressful, absurd, or downright crazy. Thanks for your video as always

You bring your favorite bakeries cookies/baked goods or something homemade along with an empty cookie tin. Everyone drinks wine, and splits up the cookies/baked goods among themselves. Then people trade books. We use to have them unwrapped but now we wrap them and just put the genre on them. To make it more like a fun surprise gift. My favorite tradition I watch every year is to watch the group of hardcore sappy romance novel readers swap among themselves stacks of bundled books of the latest series they read that year. Its like a mini-swap among the bigger swap.

I'm a Patty Peacemaker for sure. Merry Christmas! I love this video, and I still enjoy white elephant exchanges.

Ok, I have never ever heard of White Elephant.....but I would have to be Tammy Toobusy. I have 5 kids in multiple competitive sports and always end up waiting until the day-of to buy presents. LOL

I’m YOU, Kim! My workplace has a white elephant gift exchange every Christmas, and I don’t participate for the same reasons you don’t - and more! But they are SERIOUS about the exchange! There’s a whiteboard with a graph on it so that all 3 steals of each gift can be recorded! Hahahaha! It is a blast - to WATCH!!!

The last one I was at was incredibly entertaining, and I got a bag of dice out of it (which was highly sought after I might add ;) ) so I'm not complaining.

I learned to opt out of White Elephant gift exchanges. I save the money and don't go home with something I don't want or need. Besides, it's fun to watch the the evening disintegrate. I'm evil that way. Merry Christmas, y'all!

We just had two white elephant exchanges at our Christmas party (one for the kids and one for the adults) and they were hilarious! We laughed our heads off! Our go-to gift is a Chia Pet. If everyone views it as a fun activity, and not a real gift exchange, it will go better.

I am definitely Tammy Too Busy, cuz I totally have a shelf in basement of gifts that I got that I don’t want, to use for White Elephant. Though when I was introduced to White Elephant in college, most people brought stuff that they already owned but didn’t want and it became a trash to treasures situation. I would give a bath and body works set that I would never use and come away with a cool new book to read or a cute Christmas ornament or something that I would actually use.

How is it that the people who find "stealing" great fun never consider that others might not? The only solution is to separate them before you start!

One year, years ago, at our church Christmas party, we did a white elephant/dirty Santa exchange. Always fun with 40+ people, by the way. Anyway, our senior Pastor, who was in his 80's picked a gift off the table and opened it and his face went so red...... it was a Victoria's Secret gift card! Funniest thing ever at that place!

Lmao. My childhood parish priest dressed up as a nun for Halloween one year. Towards the end of the evening, he took off the veil. A few of the husbands turned red in embarrassment and quickly left. They'd been telling him raunchy jokes all night.

I'm a mixture of all them except the too busy one. That award goes to my friend Jeni who is on 4 pickleball teams and has tons of grandkid activities.
