I was guessing a labral tear since the pain started (the morning after a long kicking practice), but occupational health doctor laughed at me for suggesting it. Confirmed now, after half a year, and I'm so tired of having to even deal with doctors, who hardly even suggested this possibility until "oh, you were right, oh well!" Such incompetence, despite me very specifically explaining all the direct signs and how the pain appears (deep in the socket, groin and buttocks + shoots down to the foot, etc).

My current experience is the direct opposite. I went in for tightness on the outside of my hip, which PT seems to be helping with (i think so far). During that time, i got pain in my groin & adductor area due to pistol squatting and still doing bjj. Its been over a month. But i dont have any hip pain unless i squeeze my legs or try to use my adductor (in fact, i can stand prefectly still & try to squeeze my legs with no hip movement, and I get groin pain & what seems to be pain in my upper inside leg). Doc referred me to do an MRA upon hearing groin pain. I dont think he even heard anything else i said. Seems like he is assuming labral tear is the source for all of my pain. I'll have the MRA in 2 weeks.

Fantastic, thank you for such a great explanation. None of the health professionals I have seen over the last six years I have had my symptoms have ever been able to explain it as well as you. When the labrum of my right hip gets caught it feels like something is out of place and my range of motion diminishes so much it impacts many areas of my life. I have to wait till it goes back in place to get back to my normal. I just wish I knew of an exercise or movement to put it back sooner rather than waiting.🙏 Unfortunately I am considered too old (58) for hip arthroscopy and repair so have to wait till my mild arthiritis symptoms (which don't bother me) are severe enough for a hip replacement. 😠

WOW! What an awesome video. I'm with some of the others here, I have been to three doctors about my hip pain. The first two diagnosed me as having bursitis, which I do have. The third finally told me bursitis would not cause my groin pain. He diagnosed me with a hip labrum tear, but really didn't explain it to me. Exactly what I’m experiencing in my right hip. The issue started in October 2022. First doc (via an x-ray) diagnosed it as arthritis. I’m 64 and believe I have some arthritis but never trusted that was the issue due to the fact, my pain came on suddenly rather than gradually. 2nd chiropractor believed it was due to a bulge in my spine (I have a slight bulge between 4&5 and not a herniated disc. I finally had an MRI done which showed a labral tear and two small bone spurs. It took about 7mos to accurately diagnose the source of my pain. I’m in the process of seeking surgery so I can get back to some semblance of normalcy! Thank you for sharing this information!

THANK YOU - You've put me at ease! At first I thought I might have a labrum tear. But, I would sometimes get an occasional slow aching pain down to the knee and sometimes all the way down to my ankle which had me thinking this might be sciatica and/or arthritis in my joints instead. I need an MRI to confirm, but for now my stress is gone and I will sleep better tonight. 👍

I have popping and clicking and catching mostly when I get up from a sitting position. The pain is very significant. I have the diffuse pain in the thigh as well, which I haven't heard anyone talk about that symptom.. so thanks for mentioning that symptom. I get an MRI today. I'm a 72 yo female.

Great video thank you so much! I've struggled to diagnose where exactly my pain is coming from for the past 18 months. Initially suspecting sciatica with an MRI on my spine and an X-ray on my hip, I'd never heard of this before, nor has it been suggested to me by any doctor, PT, or chiropractor. I can definitely relate to the catching and clicking especially with anterior pelvic tilt while seated. Sounds like this could really be the source of my injury. Will schedule an MRI for my hip asap. Thank you!

Hip pain for years that progressed to all that you mentioned and keeping me up at night because the pain was pain. The doctor took an xray and said nothing is wrong with your hip but I’ll humor you and do an MRI. It showed cysts, arthritis and a labrum tear. What is wrong with him, why would I want to make up pain lol. Waiting on an appointment to find out what’s next? Do they require surgery? I failed to mention that I’ve spent the last two years getting injections in my hip for “bursitis” that has not helped. This video was very informative, thank you.

I'm 34 and have had pain in my hip since March. Started as Bursitis, but due to a partial tear in my patellar tendon on the left, I had to off-load fully onto an already sore hip + let it bear the load of lifting my 50lb massage table to and from work (I got a roller now). The pain has been intensifying even after a bursitis shot. Pain in ground, pain right below at the edge of buttock's line, pain in hip, leg stiff when walking, pain so bad getting up sometimes I collapse back down, rotating it out of criss-cross hurts, muscles around hip seizing up. The only thing I don't have is the popping/grinding (though this hip does pop loudly when getting up sometimes). MRI and X-rays all say negatives. New PT did tests on my hip and is certain there is a labrum tear as both tests I had shocks of pain (Groin and then the pain in the buttock's edge) that had me nearly pull myself away from him. So, we'll see where we go from here... Sadly, hip MRI's are notorious for not getting the posterior labrum tear in the image... Just my luck. I'm guessing it's pretty small now, but it's only getting worse (the pain) with time. I'm so tired of being in pain. X.X

My right hip has been killing me for 3 weeks though. She wants me to start PT, but I am worried since I don't really know what I'm treating yet. Do you ever see significant improvement with just physical therapy or is surgical intervention usually necessary? I was just diagnosed with a labral tear a few hours ago after having an arthrogram MRI done. I don't experience groin pain, clicking, or catching. The pain is more outwardly located, is aggravated with rotation or pivoting, and I definitely have the dull achiness going down my thigh.

Can you tell me if this sounds like a hip labrum tear? I have no groin pain, it's mostly in the right butt/hip area. I feel it at the bottom of a squat and, to a lesser extent, during the deadlift. I rarely feel it at any other time. I noticed that when I squat, if I put my right foot a bit behind my left, the pain is alleviated, I also noticed that if I do about a half rep (say I'm doing a heavy set of 3), I'll do 1 rep halfway down, then, I'll do my 3 reps and it feels better, also seems like after I've got one rep out of the way, the rest of the set is a lot less painful. I looked up an anatomy chart and based on where I feel the pain, I thought it might be a hip labrum tear so I've been doing rehab for it. For a while, it felt better but today, it just hurt pretty bad again so I'm wondering if I misdiagnosed my injury.

After 3 years of suffering from a labrum tear I’m finally getting surgery. Doctors sent me in so many different direction. My lower back, thoracic muscles, knee, foot, groin all were irritable for 3 years. They sent me to an SI-Joint specialist and I got my SI fused. Directly after surgery my upper thigh was in extreme pain. So I went back to the hip specialist and they finally did the injection test in my hip. Lo and behold! It was the labrum tear the entire time! They seen the tear on the MRI but said it was small and no concern. Now I can’t walk and I’m scheduled for surgery on the 25th. Such a frustrating journey.

@@Tonloc33On the other hand, ive about many cases where docs have prescribed surgery for small tears simply because the MRI showed something. And the patient got surgery and after almost a year of rehabbing, their pain was still there because the pain source WASN'T the labrum. In fact, most research says that a significant portion of the population probably have small labral tears that never cause any problems or symptoms at all. The more i read about labral tears & the research behind them, the more convinced i am that this field of medicine isnt quite mature yet. Its a coin flip.

Sitting is uncomfortable as I feel pinching in hip and pain in buttock. Being active such as walking and exercise feels good for my joints. Past MRI without contrast showed fraying but recent MRI with contrast findings were mild hip osteoarthrosis WITHOUT tear. Can MRI with contrast still be false negative? Does hip OA go hand in hand with labral tear? I’m so tired of living with chronic pain and not having diagnosis.

I thought maybe I had tendinitis in the quad... also, would a tear lead to pain in the adductors too? I have what I thought was tendinitis there as well, super painful.

Same here. I’m 64 but graduated from Nursing School in 1980. I ignored every major and minor injury until it stopped me dead in my tracks. Hopefully I’ll be eligible for surgery. I’m struggling with Stage IV Lymphoma and I’m dealing with it but I can’t imagine the rest of whatever my time in a wheelchair.

I can relate. I'm 45 and have almost all of my joints affected by OA in different stages. At the beginning, when I had only one problem, the right knee, I was incredibly desperate. But now, after 7 years and 9 other joints having joined the club🙄 I'm surprised to see that life goes on somehow, I'm still going to work, walk in the nature and you know what: I'm more wiser than before and surprisingly I was able to adapt with the help of the Lord.

Very interesting. I’ve had 8 years of mysterious hip/lower back/pelvic pain that began during pregnancy. At that time I was told it was SPD, but it never resolved after birth (c section), in fact I could barely walk then. Doctors continued to brush me off, physiotherapists tried hard to help but couldn’t resolve the recurring pain. Finally I was given an MRI and they say it’s a labral tear and I’m scheduled for surgery to repair it. Wondering though, I struggle to roll from my back on to the side with the injury, like my core muscles don’t engage properly to do that, does that seem consistent with this or should I push for further investigation?

Sorry to hear about the issues you've been having. Difficult to tell without an assessment I'm afraid! Could be worth getting investigated.

I’m currently going through the same exact symptoms, after my son was born 4 years ago, i immediately felt something wrong as soon as I stood up.I completely lost mobility of my leg for a whole week, doctors brushed it off . 4 years later countless of hospital visits they never found anything. But this describes to a tea every symptom I have . The pain is only getting worse . I’m only 28 years old and I hate I can’t keep up or work out. Becuase the pain is unbearable.

What does groin pain actually mean? If you're male, could you have pain in the testicles/genitals (especially when sitting)?
@davidgremaud7447

I had that, and was diagnosed with Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. My right testicle was often retracted into my abdomen and in pain. It started with a labral/groin injury from tennis. Amazingly, stretching my groin muscles ended the problem. The diagnosis was made by a urologist after a digital rectal exam.
