I agree with all your points. I have a 2020 RKS and bought the factory windshield and highway peg mounts. Went Amazon for passenger pegs, backrest and luggage rack. Gotta chose what matters most. My three rules. I don’t mess with brakes and handlebars and tires. Those three are priority ones. I let someone with more experience than me to get it right. But I might try out handlebars since labor is outrageous for that swap. Love the content brother!

I still remember when I bought Mustang seats for my first bike (2005 Yamaha 650 Custom). It was about a year after buying the bike. She saw the receipt for the seat and lost her mind. $400 for a (&&%%%^ seat! I said let's take a ride and see if there is a difference. We were out for about 2 hours. We got back to the house she looked at me and said you can keep the seat.

I totally feel this! Amazon is such a mixed bag and you REALLY need to read between the lines when shopping. Ive gotten "performance" Ig-coils that fell apart on the first ride, and LED turn sigs that were NOT LED. Then again, Ive bought dunlop tires that were cheap and actually good. The $30 LED full headlight assembly I am actually quite impressed with too! The $40 headlight windscreen wasnt bad either, although looking directly through it makes everything look all warped and weird. When your not after something brand specific and just shopping around, its always gonna be a roll of the dice though I can safely say im satisfied with what I get about 75% of the time.

My biggest Amazon boo boo was a replacement inspection cover for my primary. On a Mid controls Dyna the inspection cover has a hole in it for the post to come through that the shifter Mounts to. This cover was so off in size it didn't even cover up the whole gasket. It left the Gap all the way around and you could see the gasket peeking out around the edges Yes it leaked and I had to replace it. My biggest win was my Burley knock off fork caps with preload adjust. Half the price, beautifully machined, and solid quality. As for technology mounts I've been running Ram mounts for phones, cameras, and GPS is for about 15 years and never had a problem with them. For windshields I used to really be sold on National cycle starting in the mid-90s but more recently I've become a big fan of Memphis Shades.

I know you put this video out a couple of years ago, but it is still quite timely for me. I started riding Harleys in the late '80s (I know, I'm old). When you wanted to customize your bike back then you went to your local bike shop or mail ordered from the current magazines of the time like Easyriders. After a bad accident in the mid 2000s (back and knee surgery), I sold my Fatboy and have not ridden since. This year, I finally mustered up both courage and $$$ to buy another bike (’07 Ultra Classic). Of course, the first thing any old-time biker does is start striping of old oem parts to replace with new modern shiny stuff. Where was the first place I went to, Amazon of course. But just as you bring up, I’m having a hard time sorting out the good finds from the junk. This not as much of a problem back when I was riding. Gonna be a bit of a learning curve trying to figure out all that I need/want while I do a tour pack delete and slim down the UC a bit. Thanks for your help.

I have a couple different Amazon windshields. One very tinted, one lightly tinted. The curve was correct the holes and fit was fine. Look nice but what I noticed was what I believe was cheap coatings. They both seam to get tiny scratches very easily when cleaning even with a soft cloth (Paper towel forget about). My mom retired from a factory that made lenses and shields for military helmets and goggles. (Along with contracted brand products such as OAKLEY) She worked in the "coating" department. Her big thing was always about good vs. cheap. Quality of sunglasses or whatever you might have is determined by the complicated baking on process of materials, thickness, number of layers, etc that effect durability and clarity. I have back on the HD shield I started with as the other two didn't really last well.

For a hundred it was worth a shot to me but YMMV.

Had a clip come off my Cobra rack, called J&P Cycles or Dennis Kirk (use both) had the replacement part in 2 working days, no questions asked. Ronnie's Harley Davidson I use for the Harleys, great service, great prices, they are on the opposite coast, but I spend money where I am treated with respect. The local dealers I have dealt with in Arizona and Southern California act like they are doing you a favor. Rocky Mountain MC/ATV is also great. Will use Amazon for gear or non safety/critical parts. I’ve had interesting experiences with seats. On my Street glide special I took the stock seat off ( doesn’t everybody?) and Ultimately went with the H-D comfy seat like what’s stock on the limited. I’ve put on the tour pack and rear crash bars as well with extension armrests. All for the misses or,”The one who must be obeyed.” Now the Harley seat I put on is very comfortable and my,”Tushy” is the ultimate judge, but if you flip the seat over Harley cheaply staples the seat material to the back plate. I tried out the mustang seat at J&S as they have demo seats and the mustang material is built much stronger with rivets attaching them to the back plate. But... my Tushy rules and the Harley seat was more comfortable. We’ll see how it holds up? A little story... I had a Yamaha FJ09 which I sold for the Harley. It was crazy fast! Three cylinder 850cc. Went over 33,000 miles with it. The stock seat sucked! So.... I bought a Corbin.... looked great! But myTushy doesn’t have eyes and after 75 miles I was in pain. No good. My rule of basic comfort with seats. A seat needs to be at least comfortable for one full tank of gas. Anything less is unacceptable. So... Corbin will do a one time, up to one year from purchase, replacement to soft gel foam. You have to cover shipping to California. Yes Corbin has a store in Ormond beach,Fl. But it’s got to go to Cal. So... I sent it to them. Got back soft gel seat. Looks great! Seat a little better in the Tushy dept. but maybe 100 miles before pain. Sooo. Ultimately I found a guy out of Virginia that takes original seats and makes a custom using the back plate of the original. That worked!!! My Tushy was happy. IMO Corbin looks really cool but as I stated,”My Tushy doesn’t have eyes”. Windshields. My H-D street glide short windshield is all looks but it’s useless. Went to H-D and bought a taller one. Better but no cigar. H-D wouldn’t take it back even though I just installed and tried it out. Bummer. Went with a,”Klockwerks” Absolutely love it. They even have a you tube on proper measurement for your height relative to the windshield. They talk about,”Clean air” and it’s true! If anything in the heat here in Florida the windshield is too good at deflecting and I’d like to get the breeze to cool off. Tech holder: I have the Ciro brand and I love it. The ball mount attaches using extended bolts to the control area of the bike so there’s no clamp around the handlebar. I also have the Ciro drink holder. So far they have been rock solid. Good adjustment and clean. Well there’s an eyeful from me. I could go on and on with other accessory stuff but I’ll save it for another time. Peace...

Did the Amazon windshield, scratched all over after the first wipe down. Did the phone holder___ dropped the phone on the road. Luckily not going too fast and saved it. And oh yeah, the highway pegs. couldn't get them tight enough. So bought the wind splitter windshield from Harley and the highway mounts and pegs, And the RAM mount phone holder. Cost $110.00 the hard way. You get what you pay for.

Well, think we all have came to the fork in the road with cheapo HD parts......most everything I have bought (even not on Amazon) that were too good to be true>>weren't !......all brands parts are expensive but(usually) come to be worth it.....I changed HD quite a bit & one of the 1st question people ask>>any aftermarket parts (not Mustang/V&H/etc) so, the cheapo ones don't help you a bit.....I save my pennies(?) & try & buy name brand goodies......safe riding to everyone

Not been on 2 wheels in almost 20yrs..bought most of anything j+p cycles, custom chrome, fog hollow, troc racing, zippers, s&s, all from paper catalogs. Bags and jacket was from family leather shop that closed years ago, Kelly's. Might get back into riding, lately always jealous when see group rolling by.

I got a 92 sportster. Bought forward controls off Amazon for like $130. Got it. Putting the mounts on and one of the holes in the mount was off by a quarter inch. I figured no problem small fixed. Whatever. Got gear side done. Went to do brake side and the bar that extends out from the mount was fucking short. By an inch. For a week i tried everything I could think of to fix it. And eventually bought another set for about 220 off lowbrow customs.

I agree on some things but my Amazon CVO seat still feels and looks great after a year or so with about 1500 miles + on it.

I bought a sissy bar/seat back. Fiddy dollars on amazon. They swore would fit my 02 Roadking. It did mount but it was on about a 45 degree angle leaning forward. The company is not from the USA so returning is not really an option. Time to get the drill and make my own mounting holes. Wish me luck....

What I bought that was better than stock HD....... a 25 buck shift linkage for my 2014 Tri Glide. The stock lasted LESS than 10k miles. Replaces with a helm joint model , direct from Gina?, I now have 115k mikes. Not a hiccup !

Avoid the luggage racks for tour packs. The one I tried and returned, the welds were crap, the chrome was mediocre at best, and the mounting posts wouldn't line up with the stock mounting locations on the lid. Posts weren't angled correctly and the whole rack wasn't squared up correctly. Thankfully I waited until I got the HD rack before actually drilling the holes.

True, you need to inspect your purchases closely whatever you order. I got one for my 11 Ultra and it's not show quality, but I'm a cheapskate. It's got some minor cosmetic imperfections but I have an extra hundred in my pocket. Or had anyway 🍻

Handle bars, I got z style drag bars for my v rod, (36bucks) and the bar is a fraction to small in diameter, that the piece that holds the bar to the bike, doesn't actually hold it and the bars fall when you hit the gas. Had to pin the bars in place to solve the issue. The "name brand" bars were 135 and were pre drilled for internal wiring. I should have spent the initial extra 100 bucks.

Phone holder on the bike rokform, quaklock, ram - ones i would use.. For cheap phone holders id only trust em if i was in a car, cause worse case its in the floorboard or between the seat and console but its still in the vehicle.
