There are plenty more cartridges out there with more power. I’ve reloaded for 30 years and the .375 is about the minimum you want to use on dangerous game. I actually deer hunt with a .375. Best cartridge I’ve ever used. Love it.

The 375 H&H is used mostly by professional guides in Africa. It is still held in high esteem by them and wildlife outfitters . By law in Africa it is the smallest caliber you can carry when hunting dangerous game .

Depends on the country in Africa. Some that state a 375 H&H minimum will accept the 9.3mm cartridges such as the 9.3x62 and its ballistic twin the 9.3x74R ( my favorite). While on Safari my 9.3x74R actually outperformed both the 375 H&H as well as the 375 Ruger. I had 0 recoveries of bullets in the carcasses (to my displeasure as I really wanted one for a souvenir) and all animals were recovered quickly from one shot kills.

"I would rather have a client bring a .375H&H for Dangerous Game than any other caliber." Harry Selby
@fimfengius
@fimfengius 4 ай бұрын
Selby held the .416 Rigby for himself as a stopping caliber. My direct experience is that .416 Rigby is widely favoured and used by wardens, rangers and PH in Africa as a stopping caliber. World wide clients are generally not accustomed to these big-bore calibers in an adrenaline rush and therefore should gear down in order to be able to comfortably manage a follow up shot and also being able to hunt and shoot for a week or two in a row. Selby was probably right in his opinions.

Most PH’s have kinda, like ITCHY FINGER & they tell the client to shoot on the shoulder which most probably would not drop the animal on the spot. Then the PH gets the excuse of a “back up shot“. That’s why Harry Selby wants client to be UNDER GUNNED so he can pop in a few rounds too. I would do the same too !

The 375 takes more buffalo in Africa than any other caliber. I also saw a write up by a PH there that overwhelming showed many more one shot kills on buffalo with scoped 375’s than any other caliber of his clients. His theory was the combination of scoped bolt rifle and moderate recoil allowed the average hunter to make a better first shot. I only take one rifle when I go on Safari and it’s the 375 for everything. Last trip I bang flopped a 45 inch Buffalo and took plains game down to impala. With a premium bullet like the A-frame it handles everything, penetrating on the big stuff and not tearing up the little stuff.

The negative nonsense about the .458 Win Mag is just that. It was introduced in 1956 and is still one of the most popular dangerous game cartridges available. The days of clumping powder and poor ignition with the .458 are decades in the past. It's pretty much human nature to shoot an animal badly and blame the outcome on your tools.

I haven't tried anything heavier for hunting yet, but have purchased Speer 270gr hot-cor, 286gr Hornady inter lok and 286gr Barnes Tsx. My rifle is a re-bored model 111 Savage from a 30-06 and is very accurate and a pleasure to shoot, kicks about the same as a 200gr and larger 06. Brass is easily formed from 06 cases as well. In my humble opinion the 9.3x62 should be included simply based on its versatility and effective uses on anything that walks.

As much as the 9.3x62 or even 9.3x74R are great, they aren’t DG cartridges for a number of reasons. Firstly they don’t meet the legal minimum limits in some countries. However more importantly they are typically fine to hunt most DG with, but when things don’t go to plan, they lack the stopping power required of a proper DG rifle. So I guess that’s probably why they were not included. Having said that I love my 9.3x74R and have shot plenty with it……but when I chase Buffalo I want my 416 Rigby and up. The difference in punch is noticeable.

👍True. I used to subscribe to several hunting magazines back in the '80s. There were articles with photos of hunters with their downed game like Water Buffalo, Bison, Grizzlys, Moose and even Elephants, filling the pages of those magazines, and all shot with anything from 300 Win. Mag. to 338 Win. and all the way up to 378 Weatherby Magnum. And not one time did any of those animals get up and run off the pages. Go figure, huh.🤔

.375 H&H Mag is still a common cartridge to take down the african big five. It's the smallest cartridge to hunt elephant legally in many african countries. It's powerful and take out big game. The recoil is easy to handle and it's excellent for taking long range. The common 270 grain ammunition I use, delivers 4434 Joule of kinetic energy at a distance of 100 meters into the target. .458 Win Mag in 500 grain delivers about 5800 Joule of kinetic energy at 100 meters. Unlike the old days of .470 NE, it's common to take a shot of about 100 yards in africa today and landing a vital hit before getting closer and risk your life by getting charged. Hollow point or soft point are also common now, because of the critical damage to organs when you hit the chest cavity. Today, precision at shooting and hitting the animal is more important than just the pure ammount of firepower. The best way of stopping a charging buffalo is a perfect shot that takes out the animal right away. In this situation precision is als aquired.

Honestly, I stay in Africa, and if I should choose a rifle for Africa, I'd have a .375 H&H Magnum. It's all you need, and it's very very versatile. Anything bigger is just overkill. Oh and it doesn't matter if your using a .375 or a 2bore double barrel, if you don't place your shot correctly on a elephant or hippo, your screwed anyway... doesn't matter the size.
@francoisdumon4699
@francoisdumon4699 Жыл бұрын
Well it does matter. If you miss an elephant's brain by 1-3 inches with a 375 h&h, the elephant will usually run off. Miss by the same distance with anything .500 and bigger, and you stun and drop the elephant allowing you to place a killing second shot.

So, that leaves lion, leopard, jaguar, cape buffalo, crocodile, brown/grizzly/polar bear. For these sized animals and ammunition availability the .375H&H is appropriate. Minor correction on 458 Win Mag - it was intended to compete against both 450 NE 3 1/4" and 470 NE. While 458 Win Mag never really achieved the velocity Winchester claimed it did early on, 1900 - 2000 FPS MV with a 500 gr bullet is more than adequate at dangerous game shooting distances of 10 to 80 yards. There are more 1-shot kills on cape buffalo with 375 H&H and 9.3x62 than all other cartridges combined. They're both quite popular owing to their milder recoil, which lends itself to more accurate first shots than the rest. For those who roll their own 9.3x62 ammo, or those interested in rolling their own...what the reloading guides say on velocity and what you can actually safely achieve are 2 fairly different things. Most 9.3x62 rifles have very long throats, meaning you can seat your bullets out to 3.32 - 3.34 rather than the 3.291 SAAMI spec that all reloading manuals show.

The .404 Jeffery is an awesome dangerous game cartridge. It is every bit as capable as the .416 Rigby. The reason the .404 was eclipsed by the .416 is because of American author and hunter Robert Ruark who wrote the book, "Horn of the Hunter". In it he praised the .416 Rigby used by his PH, Harry Selby. Sales of the .416 rose and those of the .404 fell. The usefulness of the .404 is verified by the fact that several countries in southern Africa equipped their game officers with Vickers rifles chambered in .404. They were used extensively in culling operations of both cape buffalo and elephant. When you're doing that kind of work, you need to KNOW that your rifle is up to the job. Another tidbit about the .404 Jeffery is that the greatest North American trophy of all time, the Chadwick ram (Boone and Crockett No. 1 Stone Sheep) was taken with this cartridge. Lee Sherman Chadwick did that back in 1936.

Every time someone writes about limited powder capacity I believe as an advanced reloader and wildcat cartridge loader those who say such thinks don't have a clue what they are talking about because rarely is a rifle cartridge ever loaded with power to the top of the case. Some powders are making such High pressures only 3/4 of the cartridge case has powder leaving a wide gap between bullet and powder. I have leaded both the 458-win mag and the 458 Lott with 500 grain bullets then ever see these cartridges ever loaded with power to the case neck because these cartridges take powers that are High pressures.

So much crappola. All the professional hunters I read (Dr. Kevin “Doctari” Robertson example) say the 375 H&H is plenty good for dangerous game. 9.3x62 Mauser very close. The guy I got my 9.3x62 from grew up hunting in Africa. Now he lives in the USA , arranges African safaris and still hunts there. He told me that he has taken 3 Cape buffalo in recent years with the Husqvarna 9.3x62 that I got from him. His favorite is the 375 Weatherby Magnum because you can shoot standard 375 H&H in it and then you have perfectly fire formed brass for reloading in the Weatherby. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

I have been reading through some of the comments and I see that people are saying the .375 (or smaller calibres used by Mr Bell) are more than sufficient to kill any game in africa.. while I will agree with that statement,( only with the .375) it seems people do not understand the difference between taking a shot at a buffalo or elephant standing still and one that is charging! A charge is a whole different story!! The speed and agility of a wounded or angry dg animal will shock all of you! This is where you need, in my opinion nothing less than a 500gr round doing 2100 + fps. To stop a charge you need to hit the brain or spine.. if you happen to miss you are in big trouble. This is where the knockdown power of the larger calibres comes in. If you miss the brain/spine with a heavy calibre at least you stand a good chance at stopping the charge .. NB if any able bodied man cannot handle the recoil of a heavy calibre he doesn't deserve to hunt big game!
@johnkertzman3223
@johnkertzman3223 2 жыл бұрын
And also people don't take into account during Bell's days if he shot and wounded an elephant it was no big deal but in today's Africa if you shoot wound an elephant you're paying for that animal and you could be out the cost of your hunt!

I am a professional hunting guide since 1976 with hunts in Alaska for Yukon moose and brown bears. You see allot of total ignorant people making the most stupid comments because they never been to Alaska and never seen the danger a Yukon bull moose can cause a hunter or the unwilling to stay down after shot a brown bear can keep coming at you even with vital organs wrecked. You see hundreds of videos on KZbin go used a 9 mm or 10 mm handgun to hunt Alaskan brown bears and every video has the same in common the moron making the video never in their life has been to Alaska and never seen a brown bear in wild Alaska and most often lives in an East coast state. I've had clients get their nerves rattled at the end of shooting a Brown bear with a large rifle then say to me what the hell why are people saying to use handguns on these bears?

i have and have read Peter Capstick's " death in the long grass" and his other books. you left out all the Weatherby rounds. having shot the .378 mag i would say that would serve you well in any social encounter including light armour. there is also the 600 nitro and 700 nitro express. because why not give yourself brain damage while hunting? it is much like the fisherman who uses the lightest rig to bring in the biggest fish. sure you can do it but you have to be lucky and good to pull it off. so i pig hunt with a 30-06 and 308. either will handle any north American game. then again as Peter said " always pay insurance. what is the cost of a round vs your hospital bills?". if i ever went to Africa like a friend has, i would feel fine with 308 or 30-06 for what i would hunt. no jumbo or buff or hippo for me. just nice tasty antelope and the like.

@francoisdumon4699
@francoisdumon4699 Жыл бұрын
No, in this case thats not what brakes are for. As a ph in africa I have never seen a fellow ph with a brake on their dangerous game rifle. For a client maybe, but then we'd suggest you go with something smaller like 375 so that a brake isn't necessary. We (the vast majority of ph's and outfitters in africa) very much dislike muzzle brakes.
@user-me3er7lm1o
@user-me3er7lm1o 8 ай бұрын
Using a brake on a guided safari hunt is extremely thoughtless regarding the rest of the hunting group and more than likely the PH will have you remove it. Even with hearing protection the brake will damage the hearing of those standing away from the rifle.

Good for women or as a 1 gun for everything in Africa calibre.

My 375 H & H loaded with 300 gr sierra gamekings @ 2640 FPS produces over 4600 ft:lbs of ME which is more than enough to drop ANY game on this planet. Anyone who claims they need more than that has an ego to feed. A pass through on a Cape buffalo is a pass through on a Cape buffalo. The energy left in the projectile after exit is wasted. Find a round that will expand and dump all its energy prior to exit with ME minimum of 4000. The 300 gr game king expands to 0.75”+ causing a devastating wound channel. Happy hunting guys & gals Cheers 🍺🍺
@gls2501
@gls2501 2 жыл бұрын
I am going to respectfully disagree with you on two points. 1. The Sierra GK is fine for thin skinned game, but it is not nearly tough enough for thick skinned game. You will get lackluster penetration or a bullet that pancakes on impact. There is a reason not one single dangerous game load has that bullet in it. 2. A pass through gives you more of a blood trail to follow and two wounds that allow air to enter the body making it harder to breathe. The fact that the bullet did not stop doesn't mean energy wasn't dumped, it just means that it retained enough momentum to get out of the animal. Dangerous and thick skinned game hunting is a very different sport to normal hunting. Do not think what applies to one necessarily applies to the other

Really depends on what type of guns you shoot . Side by sides are the first choices, even the 12 gauge 3" slug . I used my Barretta 626 for white tail . Very hard punch at 100 yards. I use 2 3/4 now and have hit at 100 hard enough . The side by cracks open shorter than an Over under. Open shut it's cocked and you know right away if you have a mixed round rather than finding it jambed in a bolt or semi auto. The 375 HH in a BAR I've heard picked before but no other autos . I had a Tee bolt in a Browning 22 it would be nice in a high power . Folding and shutting under stress is very falable. Side by side with a side arm. 😎
