Excellent video. For a long time I have pointed out how the Corvette struggled with whether it was going to be a sports car or a muscle car. I had no idea that the Mustang went through similar growing pains. Mustang definitely had some years it was not a "Mustang" but finally Ford got some engineers to get back on track. I love the Stangs.

Met a guy last year with a Saleen Mustang Grabber Orange, 07 I think, had a special number on the front bumper, but what was really rare is that it was a special order Automatic.. the guy I met bought it as a totaled car, paid 12k and it was 100% restored like new. Had a few thousand original miles.. the story was that it was ordered by an injured serviceman and his son took it out without permission and wrecked it. It was a very nice Mustang, the guy I met poured a ton of effort into fixing it and it was gorgeous.

The Mach III was from a design contest from outside of Ford. Ford was planning to make a Front Drive Mustang III to replace the Fox Body but Ford was afraid of the torches and pitchforks
@DocWolph
@DocWolph 11 күн бұрын
Incorrect. The FF car you are thinking of is the Probe, which was a rebodied Mazda 626 coupe. There were two generations produced as the first generation Probe did sell quite well. The reason the Probe was produced at the same time as Mustang was indeed Ford considered dropping the Mustang in the 1980s. They did not give much thought however. Thus We still have the Mustang and not the Probe. We would likely still have the Thunderbird instead today otherwise. Consumer sentiment and the ongoing sales of the GM F-Bodies, Camaro and Firebird, saved the Mustang and ended the Probe. Technically, a third generation Probe was the eighth and final generation Mercury Cougar. And no, the Mach III was designed internally as a design study (it is infrequent we get to know the names of the people who actually did the work), like the Dodge Turbo Interceptor ii informing the LH cars and most of Dodge division's styling for the 1990s and the CERV III/Corvette Indy informing the C5 Corvette. Often very "out there" cars used to develop new styling going forward.

@DocWolph The Probe was going to be badged the Mustang III. The Probe body was a concept car that was moved into production. Mustang fans were in an uproar. But the Mitsubishi Eclipse was in a very open market.

@@DocWolphI’m not sure where you got your “information”, but Ford never considered dropping the Mustang. The Probe was planned to REPLACE the Foxbody as the NEW Mustang. Also, the Probe never had anything to do with either the rear drive Foxbody Cougar OR the front drive 90’s Cougar.

The '62 Mustang-1's Engine, went into Tractors, and, the Ford "Tanus" in Europe. It Also took SAAB away-from 3cyl 2-Stroke motors in the Saab 95/96, and eventually in the model 97/98 Sonnet 2/3 V-4 lightweight FWD sports cars,. During it's time, three decades of such, the 96/95 model SAAB racked up a Huge amount of Rally Wins, using this Ford powerplant. 190 Hp was the Most I ever saw, with a Blower upon it, with it bored out to 1.8L. (it's 1.5L, stock). I had a 1974 Sonnet III, and had it Cam-profiled, with hardened Sleeves and a Larger Intake Holley Carb. It could easily do 118 mph, on 112 Hp..It also held it's ground in Cornering at .83G's, and had Lockheed Disc brakes all-around.So, this Was a Great Motor, for lightweight cars, IMHO.

@FullTimeGT 11 күн бұрын
It was in the late 80s through the mid 90s when the Ford Probe came out, a collab with Mazda. The front wheel drive Ford Probe lasted about a decade, and during this era Ford was planning to replace the Mustang by the newer generation Probe. But high pressure from the public forced Ford to step back and continue to produce the Mustang. It didn't took long after to discontinue the Ford Probe, as it was considered the imposter in the Ford lineup, the one that tried to kill the Mustang. The Probe was not a bad car, but it was missing the Mustang DNA and it's front wheel drive design disqualified it from being a real Mustang successor.

"Foxbody" is generally used as an informal name for the 79-93 models built on the Fox platform, and not something used by Ford in that form. While the 94-04 models were nearly identical, Ford altered the Fox somewhat and gave it the different designation of SN95, so those models were actually not Fox platforms, according to the manufacturer. All very pedantic, maybe, but generally anyone who is interested in Mustangs knows what you mean when you say Foxbody and SN95, and why you make a disinction between them.

I was wondering why in the world is the mustang mark 2 looking like 2 different videos. Turns out those are two different cars. The Mustang 2 is the black and while ones designed and destroyed in 1967, While the bright red one is called the mustang mark 2 c designed by Shinoda that came from GM so it is a lot bigger and had a 429 power plant. That was the one they lost interest in due to the Pantera I guess. The earlier 2 were just having issues with the gearbox I suppose? They just weren't happy with it on the track. All those really don't look like mustangs. I remember the first time I found out about the prototype, it just seemed so ugly compared to the 65-66, and still is. The GSX looks more like a mustang of that era but very impractical. It reminds me of the dodge eagle that flopped in the mid 80s. Finally the Mark 3 is a perfect concept. It shows what we could have if manufacturing time and cost didn't matter. It shows what they wanted the SN 95 to look like but just couldn't make it happen. It doesn't look practical or safe enough. After all it is all a trade off. Mustangs are cheap fun. They aren't meant to look like Ferraris. The mach two base is slightly my favorite but it looks like a opal or something else. They are what the company wanted to make but thank goodness they couldn't because those mustang golden years were to be savored. 69 on are kind of ok but they got really fat and away from their start which was a shame. Mustang 2 is more like the 65 than any of those but lacked something. Fox bodies I am partial too because those were my mustangs growing up. I really really like the SN95 as that is when I graduated and wanted to be in design. Love the 2005 trying to go back toward 65. Newer gens look pretty amazing but not sure if they feel more like the 69s or what they are awful big and wide. Nice video, thanks

The 90s was the beginning of the end for automotive styling. Instead of gradually moving away from the squared off style of the 80s(which I absolutely love). They turned everything into a bubble. Everything in the 90s was too rounded. And they continued to go horribly wrong afterwards. On top of the horrible styling. They improved the engines, only to overly complicate them with a bunch of unnecessary technology. So all modern vehicles are disposable appliances. Ugly shapes that you can't see out of with too many electronic nannies and brittle engines because of the overuse of technology to squeeze power from tiny engines. I will never understand why the automotive industry has gone so horribly wrong since the 90s. I know regulations are a part of it. But regulations didn't cause these horrible garbage crossovers. That's just poor design decisions

Why are you questioning it? A quick look at Car and Driver's Article... "Aptly called Predator, the motor is a supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 that summons 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque. That prodigious power twists the rear wheels through a clairvoyant seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission"

i am BEYOND RELIEVED none of those abominations ever saw the light of day other than as concepts. every single one of them, ugly as sin. can you imagine the crap Ford and Mustang drivers would have gotten from the Chevy crowd if they had gotten one of these? it would have been more shit than the Mustang II of 1974-1978 of which the hatchback was actually a great looking car

An updated Mach II in the 80's would've been interesting considering the mid-engine lineups at the time and as an entry level sports car.
