Would love to see you back on the road. Thailand is opening back up. Your best videos are the ones in SE Asia.. miss that vibe. While I love your current series, getting a bit bored of Mexico content. As for my worst hostel experience, I had my buddy choose a hostel for the night for us on the Khao San Road. He's a very budget minded traveler so he went with the cheapest he could find on this street. Turned out the hostel entrance was in the back of a pharmacy lol. Zero vibe and very basic dorms. We met another traveller there and he came out with us for the evening. At some point we lost him, and then back at the hostel, he was no where to be found, even the next day, even though all his stuff was there. We alerted the hostel staff but they didn't seem to care. So Kiwi Ben, I hope you are alive and well.

My worst experience was at a hostel in Manila back in 2015, it was central and cheap. I ended up getting no sleep due to loud music coming in from a market outside. I didn't really worry for my life at that time, but thinking back I could have spent a bit more for better accommodation. I also had to get up super early for a flight the next morning. After that I only stayed in a hostel maybe one more time before retiring my hostel days. Wish I could go back to Asia soon though!!!

Ahha reminds me of a $5 hotel I booked in Taiyuan, China. Was bizzarely in a residential tower block complex which seemed to be aimed at old people, the guy at the gate had literally no idea there was supposedly an "international youth hostel" there. The address listed it as being on the 12th floor, but after a heart-attack-inducing trip up the elevator I discovered the door all sealed up with some weird plastic wrap, a dead rat on the floor in the corridor, and some creepy looking guy smoking... Suffice to say I didn't even go in (and took the stairs down lol 😅), and enjoyed a night in the second worst hotel round the corner...

Another great vid. Also enjoyed reading about the experiences from the comments below. This old Boomer sure envies the carefree, live each day to the fullest vibe. With that said, please, please be careful as you start traveling down south. Please have a plan in place as different scenarios present themselves. I love you Kevin and Pavi!

I've stayed in private rooms that were worse than these hostels. I stayed in a room in a house in Bulgaria once. I got back to the room at night, pulled the covers back on the bed and about 30 cockroaches darted everywhere. Another time in Jakarta there was a room that was just a cement box and every time we turned the lights off there was the sound of something scurrying around the room and up the walls. We slept with the lights on and then took off once the sun came up. We never found out what was making that sound. I am much more picky these days.

Between 2016 and 2018 I hostelled a lot in multiple countries in Asia and honestly my worst hostelling experiences were in the country where it was most expensive - Japan. I just got incredibly unlucky, I stayed at multiple hostels in different areas of Tokyo and I was plagued by snorers at every single one. Nothing wrong with the hostels themselves, but god dammit people who know they snore need to do everyone a favour and not subject strangers to it. That trip was the time I decided fuck hosteling, i'm not some broke backpacker any more I have a job and have got a hotel ever since (that and getting a girlfriend around the same time put hostelling out of the question)

You said you felt like you were in jail at the Mexican hostel , but the truth is, even prisoners and jailbirds have more leg-room to sleep, but I can see why that guy was so adamant on discouraging you from staying there.. for one, you're too tall for the beds and secondly, I would not feel safe there..

This is nothing, back in the 90s i stayed in a "hotel" in Phan Rang (which was mosquito heaven) which looked like it was converted from a mental asylum or took inspiration from the Hanoi Hilton....very loud, people screaming thru the night, in fact maybe it was a nut house🤔 Fortunately the doors were solid metal like prison so nothing could get in to your room but you had the impression you didnt want to get out either.😄
