How does your DR650 ride on the highway?
@patring62020 күн бұрын
I had a 2023 DR650 for a year, and I really enjoyed it, until I had to do any time on the highway. Even short distances on the highway at anything over about 105Kmh was torture. Great on gravel and dirt roads. I sold mine. They are practically giving away 2024 Teneres in the Midwest US. I bought one OTD for $8300. It's a bit taller than the DR650, even though on paper it says the seat is lower. I couldn't touch both toes until I lowered it. The Tenere does seem to carry its center of gravity quite a bit higher than the DR650, but I haven't ridden it anywhere where I couldn't keep it upright. The good thing is that getting to the offroad on the highway is now a pleasure. The twin purrs, accelerates well, and there is no problem running 120kmh on the highway all day. It's sprung a bit soft, needs a tail rack, a real skid plate, chain guard, grips, crash protection, and perhaps some accessory power mods, but that platform is solid. Heavier than what you'd like, but it has about 300km+ fuel range. Adam Riemann and a host of others on youtube show how versatile the standard Tenere can be and how well it performs off road. Find a dealer with 2024s and tell them you want a 2025...You may be surprised at the offer you get.
@BajaMoose20 күн бұрын
Thanks for your input! The Tenere is an awesome bike but it's a bit heavier than what I'm looking for and in Mexico it costs more than twice as much as I'm willing to spend. As for the DR650, thanks for letting me know that it sucks on the highway. It was one of my top choices but I definitely need a bike that is pleasant to ride on the highway sections, of which there will be plenty.

All kinds, Currently have YZ250 , CBR1000rr , and a 2019 Husqvarna 701.. of all of those motorcycles I have ever read the 70 one is absolutely amazing. It’s a mixture of comfort with power with great handling and it’s also got the missing sixth gear. With a trip that long there will be times when you will want to get up to speed to just knock out some miles. The 701 would be by far the best bike for that trip. @BajaMoose the versys x300 is not really a dual sport. It's not very off-road capable, the engine lacks power down low, it's heavier than a dual sport, it has essentially road bike suspension. I am doing a similar trip to yours in 2025, I also live in Mexico (baja). I have got my choice down to a DR650 and Himalayan 450. I am leaning more towards the 450 as you can buy it off the floor with everything I will need, luggage, bash plate, protection and a decent suspension. and if you want extra fuel tanks. Yes its going to be heavy but any bike will be once you load your gear onto it. I think it will be better on the tarmac than the DR. Overall it appears to be a better all rounder. Joe Ryan has ridden one for many long adventures and gives it a good review each time

A lot of people are pleased with the Himalayan and it does have a lot of nice features. I think for me if money wasn't an option, a KTM 690 (Husqvarna 701) with a rally tower and auxiliary fuel tank would be my choice. If I was on more of a budget, I'd go for a DR650 or a Honda XR650, depending on what I could find. The Japanese thumpers would be reliable for a long distance trip, and you could pick up a second hand one with a bunch of mods, and still not worry about reliability. I've been looking for a machine for a similar trip and I am likely to buy the CFMoto Ibex 450. They have many in Mexico, and from all the reviews even though the total weight is higher than what you want, the weight is carried low. I've also read it is comfortable on the highway. I sat on on the demo version, no rides allowed, and rode the 450NK, which I can say kept up with the big bikes and was very smooth. Also, there are a lot of CFMoto dealers throughout the Americas. The US seems to be last in getting these bikes. I have one on order, last I heard "early next year". We'll see. I want to test ride before I buy. I'm an older rider, don't need to get there fast, just in one piece. Good luck, curious why you are looking for Mexican registration and why going south to north? Thanks
@BajaMoose15 күн бұрын
Yes, that CF Moto 450 is definitely a nice bike! I'm looking for Mexican registration because I have a Mexican permanent resident card which doesn't allow me to drive thru the country on a bike that isn't registered in Mexico. If I were to reach the Southern border of Mexico with a bike from another country, I would need to import it and pay almost the full purchase price in taxes and fees. This doesn't apply if you are entering Mexico as a tourist, but that's not an option for me. As for why from South to North, I've never been to South America and would like to start down there.

@@BajaMoose Thanks for the honest reply. I stay in Costa Rica part of the year, similar here, about 60% tax on vehicles, the CFMoto 450MT is over $9k here. I previously had a KTM 690 that I tried to make into more of an ADV bike ($$$), but it was just never that great on the highways, even with better seat and windshield. I'm sure I'll be on crappy roads at times, but not going enduro riding, so I think the 450MT sounds about right for me, and the price is right.

Complementing my opinion on the SAHARA 300, it's not a powerfull bike, with only 25hp, but with a six gearbox, it maintanes highway speeds at 120km/h easily, with a little breath for going up to 145km/h when needed....riding between 90/110km/h, it makes around 30/32km/lt, so with it's 13,8lt fuel tank, it will go up to 430 kms of distance. In BRAZIL you can buy a New one for U$ 5000, and HONDA has more than 500 dealers around the country. It algo has a sibile sister, called the TORNADO 300L, that has the same motor, but is a bit more off-road oriented. This TORNADO 300L is already avaiable for sale in Argentina. Next year i'm heading down to USHUAIA on my SAHARA 300...but i greatly recomend you to ride around BRAZIL with you're bike, no matter wich one...BRAZIL is a very moto friendly country, and has lot's of beatifull natural parks, the food is good, the hotels are cheap and acessories, tyres and other spare parts for the SAHARA 300 are also cheap and very easy to find....

Here's a vote for the DR650. Reliability, simplicity and can run on crap fuel. You will have to get a tank and seat and maybe change some ergos like bars and pegs but the starting price meets the bill. And parts are available everywhere. I have had mine for 3 years now. I don't ever recall having ridden one, but I used to have an older model KLR650 (2002 I think) as well as a 1986 Honda XR600R which I suppose ride very similar to the Suzuki DR650. You can pour anything in the tank that is sort of combustible and they keep running! They are easy to work on, no electronics to mess up, parts and service available just about anywhere. Definitely one of my top choices! Regarding your trips, how far up into Alaska did you go?
@tribalbc21 күн бұрын
@BajaMoose Never ridden a XR600 but have ridden the 400 and 650. The DR has a lower seat height and carries its center of gravity lower. I don't feel top heavy even with 50lbs of gear and can ride two track and easy single track loaded up. Motor is very similar to the XR650L but a little more of a bottom end torque into mid range motor. Good and comfortable on highway to 120km/h after that you start to ring it out. I have only been as far as Hyder Alaska so far as my back routes are very round about. With my routes that round trip was 4,000 km with only 400km of it on highway, mostly dirt. I have put 37,000 km on my bike so far pretty much all big trips around BC camping the whole way. If you are looking for route ideas through BC hit me up. Good luck on your trip 👍

Personally, I've seen more of the rest of the world than I ever needed to so I wont be leaving the USA ever again. But if I was going on a cross country or multi state tour and I had new bike money because I won a big lottery jackpot or something, I'd be picking between the new lower KLR 650 S or the 450 Himalayan. Also the CF Moto 450 could be a possibility if there was a nearby dealer and the valve check intervals were spread out reasonably far apart. I cant do complex mechanical stuff so how often I would need to have a shop bill for that is a serious factor for me. Maintenance and repair costs are why European bikes arent a consideration for me. I've been hoping Kawasaki would update the Versys X with the 400 engine but it doesn't look like that will happen. But in reality I'm just a working man so I don't have new bike money. So I've been keeping my eye on the used bike market for a good condition older KLR 650 or a DR 650 for a fair price. There's plenty of options for seat upgrades, touring windshields, luggage and bigger fuel tanks that would be necessary for the DR. But many used KLR's and DR's have already had those upgrades done. So that's the direction I'm leaning after I get my tax return.

It's a nice bike but not enough dealers in South America yet.

Kove 800X light, plenty of power, OK for your height, plenty of amenities, excellent price. There's a lot of info in the Internet, keep us updated on your research!.

I saw 3 of the Kove 450 bikes at a race about a year ago, I think it was at the Baja 1000, and I really liked them. The issue is that in South America they currently only have dealers in Colombia and Ecuador, so I'd need to wait until they expand their dealer network.

The Kove website claims that the 800X Rally only weighs 364 lbs (165 kg) dry weight. It looks pretty awesome! I sure hope that they hurry up with expanding their dealer network.

Having ridden from Ushuaia to Alaska a few years back my choice would have been: 1. Honda Crf300 Rally. You easily get 400 kms out a tank if not riding full throttle at highways. But I would probably also have added a extra rear tank (or maybe just carried a canister/fuel bladder) Seat and suspension must be upgraded though. 2. Royal Enfield Himalayan. Yes its a bit heavy but it has bashplate, engine bars and center stand included in that weight. And a very decent range of 450-500 kms. 3. Suzuki Dr650. Very old school but reliable. It does need bigger fuel tank, suspension and seat upgrades though. The Honda XRE Sahara looks interesting….

Thanks for your comments! What bike did you ride from Ushuaia to Alaska and how did you like it?
@KurtGAndersen20 күн бұрын
@ A Tenere660 - a bike that never was imported to north-America. I hated it!
@BajaMoose20 күн бұрын
That's supposed to be a pretty nice bike. What didn't you like about it?
@KurtGAndersen20 күн бұрын
@ Everything! Heavy! Top heavy! Totally unreliable! Used a lot of oil, even after a total top end overhaul with new cylinder, piston etc it used a lot of oil! It should be impossible! Left me stranded so many places, every second day in the Americas. Fuel consumption - when I bought it I got approx 60-65 mpg US if I rode it sensible, but after the first 50 k kms fuel milage went up a lot and I could hardly get 45 mpg even if I never rode above 55 mph. All - I repeat ALL overlanders on a 660 Tenere I met during my 5 year RTW had major issues with their bikes! Say no more!
@BajaMoose20 күн бұрын
Wow! Good to know. I'll stay away from the Tenere.

Enjoy your big trip…I have a crf 300 l and with an extra 1200 euro spend i got good suspension and big fuel tank.I am 66 and a hart conditions forbids me to lift anything heavy so even for this bikes weight I have a so called moto winch with me all time .Perhaps look into it so a heavier bike might look feasible too…just an idea😊
@BajaMoose21 күн бұрын
I really like the CRF300L Rally but I'm restricted to bikes that are available in Mexico and unfortunately Honda doesn't sell that model in Mexico. The moto winch to lift the bike could be an option. I've seen some that consist of a tie-down strap and ratchet mounted on a pole. Might give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion!
@SLG191121 күн бұрын
Interesting stuff, thanks! I'm not really qualified to tell you what bike to get, but I would generally not worry about tank size. I think it will be too limiting given your other requirements, and you can always carry extra fuel on the bike to top off with, no? I'm 6" shorter than you and like my XT250 quite a bit, but I can't imagine riding any single as far as you plan to. If I had to, given my height and your requirements, I think the DR650 is probably the best choice. It will be almost 500# after you add your gear, but you can always take it off if you need to when lifting the bike. I would add lower crash bars that stick out as far as practical, as they will make picking the bike up easier. Looking forward to your next installment and good luck!
@BajaMoose20 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comments! As for gas, I would rather avoid carrying external fuel tanks or bags unless absolutely necessary. That's why I'm aiming for 400 km on a full tank. There will be sections of my trip where it might be around 400 km between gas stations and I will need to carry extra fuel to make it thru, but it won't be a daily thing of carrying external fuel. As for the XT250, I used to own a Mexican Honda 250 Tornado which was a Latin American version of the Honda XR250, very similar to the XT250 but a little bit taller. Of all of the bikes that I've owned, that one was one of my favorites. Unfortunately, Honda discontinued it and replaced it with the XRE300 which is a little less off-road capable. Anyway, I see that you also cast your vote for the DR650.

Not sure why you can't right a heavier bike. If you know how to do it, anyone can lift a 600+ pound bike. You need a reliable bike, so most of this list except the KLR can be excluded. Half the trip is highways, where 300s can't cut it.
@BajaMoose21 күн бұрын
I prefer to not risk injuring myself while trying to lift a heavy bike. As for reliability, the KLR is definitely dependable, along with the Suzuki DR650S. As for the highways, I will be taking secondary highways and dirt roads, so I prefer a lighter and more nimble bike, 450 cc or less.

what is the benefit of the mexican registration ?
@BajaMoose21 күн бұрын
It's only a benefit for those that are in a situation similar to my own. I'm a US citizen with a Mexican permanent resident card. As such, the Mexican government won't allow me to ride a foreign registered bike from the southern border of Mexico to the northern border unless I import it. The import fees for a used bike (10 years old or more) are reasonable but they are crazy expensive for a newer bike, like 80% of the purchase price. Add to that the import broker's fees, and it gets really pricey. Plus, I would need to do that when crossing from Guatemala to Mexico and besides being a hassle, it would probably take a while. That's why I decided that for me, it's just easier to buy the bike in Mexico.
