@The Barefoot Kid as far as artistry is concerned, it has followed along with the secular trends of draining all the actual musical skill and creativity out of the product. It's greed and laziness. There's also a kind of control freak factor in the Christian music industry that I think got a little freaked out in the wild and crazy 90s and just wanted everything locked down to a safe simple formula. Last but not least, I think the Enemy loves what has happened, because the power is mostly gone. CCM is useless for outreach to the world whereas it used to be powerful, but also turning off a lot of Christians or even would be Christians because of its lack of power in worship as well.

Same! also I sometimes enjoy music with Christian themes that isn't meant to be 'Christian music'. For example I love love love old folk music, and a lot of it has Christian imagery and such. Bob Dylan for example uses tons of Christian imagery but it was more subtle and in the general Dylan way, either poetically vague or incoherent lol (unless you count some of his 80s stuff, as he did make a few actually gospel esque albums then).

A remedy to all of your posts and the christian artist and musical issues is Josh Garrels. A secular music executive reviewed his discology and was blown away, that he was not only the standard for and answer to the Christian music dilemma of authenticity and devotion to God first, but stated he should not be limited to the genres' fans, but stated he should be on a musical platform of appreciation as the Beatles. To each their own as artists comparison go, but I agree he is the antidote to self gaining or focused reasons to love, follow, and worship our Lord Jesus Christ, I tend to receive in most contemporary Christian songs I hear in worship services and on the local Christian radio songs. Take Marvin Gaye vocal, Bob Dylan lyrics/demeanor/folk style, with a slight Grandmaster Flash flow or rhythm in hip hop blended as a ballad of worship and forgiveness in a modern day recreation of how I would imagine King David's sincerity and devotional psalms to God would sound. That's Josh Garrels, Christian music genre and it's worst kept secret.

I have been in Christian bands and secular bands. Christians often let the message get in the way of the music, or try to downplay the message so it WON'T get in the way --- which makes it get in the way. And there were conflicts over the styles of music that were deemed "acceptable." As a youth church band, we were once told firmly to stop playing songs that had a strong beat --- because rhythm was what "godless tribes in the jungle" used to call up demons. One time, when we played at a black church and the congregation stood up and started clapping and dancing, we were lectured about not letting our music make people want to dance. So, we were always being told to mellow out, to take things down a few notches, that true Christian rock shouldn't make you feel good, like secular rock does. Which seemed to create dishonest mediocre music. It was a weird and confusing time.

The lack of original songwriting and true creativity is what really irks me about CCM. I'm a musician and songwriter and Christian, and I think music made for God should be the BEST, most original, most experimental, most creative music out there. Christian artists should be the most skillful and dedicated to their craft. When David said, "Sing a NEW song of praise to Him; play skillfully on the harp and sing with joy" I don't think he meant use the same rehashed I-VI-IV-V chord progression, the same tired lyrics, the same production and arrangement tropes, and the same nursery rhyme melodies that have been used a thousand times before. He’s quoted as saying “On an aesthetic level, faith and art are a dangerous match. Today, they can quickly lead to devotional artifice or didactic crap. This would summarize the Christian publishing world or the Christian music industry. I followed CCM music from the mid 70s into the early 1990s and I definitely understand your point of view. I would say that like any form of music there is good and bad. There are groups that are totally frauds and there are groups that believe in what they’re doing and work hard at the musicianship and to make the best possible presentation. It’s entertainment for Christians. I followed legendary groups like the Second Chapter of Acts and Phil Keaggy. These bands featured some of the very best vocals and musicianship in the industry. These bands also crossed over into the rock industry as musicians like Kerry Livgren would play for the Second Chapter of Acts, then be with his regular band Kansas a few weeks later. I met Matt Ward and Annie Herring and in addition to being great vocalists they are also very nice people. I think it’s like anything else when people see others being successful in a certain industry they look at it as a shortcut and believe they can infiltrate and use that as their foot in the door. The bands I listen to are the original bands that were out in the 1970s well before it morphed into something else.

The reality, from a Christian perspective, is that a lot of CCM songs these days are very theologically and spiritually weak, and a lot of the popular artists are at best theologically underdeveloped, at worst outright heretics that endorse false teaching. A lot of big songs sung in very orthodox and sound churches, because they're more modern and pass a theological sniff test, are written by these people. There's plenty of info on KZbin about this topic from channels like Mike Winger, Spencer Smith and a few other channels I'm missing, as well as some popular sound teachers, i.e. John Piper (DesiringGod), John MacArthur (GraceToYou), Paul Washer (HeartCryMissionary), and others. I had to agree w/ Spencer Smith on his recent showing of how they use hypnosis and eastern religious spiritual practices in modern mega churches. Though I sometimes find Spencer hypercritical and flagrantly legalistic on some matters, he had it all very well covered in his recent video. I didn't know about this movement around a decade ago, or the tricks the devil has slipped in back when Christians were telling me, "You have to hear this, it's such anointed praise music". No, it wasn't. It was boring, the lyrics were repetitive and vapid, even though though the production value was obviously there. Spencer was very astute in pointing out that Christians that listen to this empty music tend to have similar besetting sins and can't seem to grow in their walk, though w/ rare exceptions. I can see God honouring new and fervent believers, that get honestly saved in these types of churches, or who are initally hooked w/ this kind of music. The real sheep will invariably move on in time though.

The message of the Bible is not comfortable. There are some pretty clear sacrifices required in order to grow in faith. I worry that artists who write “comfortable” music are contributing to the infantilization of faith, much like Paul talked about in 1 Corinthians. This isn’t to say that music should always deeply convict us (there is a time and a place for everything), but if the entire career of an artist is bland and recycled, I worry that their faith is also weak. The best artists, in my opinion, are the ones who do attempt to push back at the world, in a way that isn’t so safe. One such band that comes to mind is Impending Doom, which confronts the church head-on, opposing internal corruption and reminding us that judgment day is approaching. And during all of this they write interesting compositions which add additional weight to the lyrics, rather than just serving as background ambience. Fantastic video, I really appreciate your approach. Looking forward to part 2!

My children, wash your robes and purify your houses, for The Holy One comes nigh! Be not left in bitter sorrows, abased in the Great and Terrible Day of The Lord! Cast away these false doctrines and filthy traditions; stop committing fornication with the harlot! Repent therefore, and come out of her! Take not one of her corrupt doctrines to yourself, stand apart from her traditions, for they are most perverse! For I tell you the truth, you all remain like her! Says The Lord. From the least to the greatest, you all pollute My name by your traditions and profane My Word by your doctrines! Behold, you have agreed together to forsake My Law and forget My Sabbaths, justifying your transgression in the name of Grace, upholding your sin by permission in the name of The Messiah, whom you call Christ! DESECRATION! GREAT BLASPHEMY! You follow another messiah, a false christ, a molded image, which your forefathers created and you continue to mold to this day! Return to Me, therefore, and seek your Savior in truth, that you may now embrace Him as He truly is! For YahuShua, yes He whom you call Jesus, is your only Sanctuary from the storm. To Him alone shall you flock, His flesh shall you eat, His blood shall you drink. Walk in HIS ways as they are, and not as you would have them be. Put away all your holidays, and no more worship Me in that way,[1] for it is most perverse. Seek now the way of true righteousness, and obey all My commands; set all these crooked paths straight, and you may yet escape all these things which are about to come upon you. TURN TO GOD!... Turn to Me as I am, and not as you would have Me be! For The Holy One comes quickly to deliver His own!... Behold, you shall see the angels of Heaven Ascending and descending upon The Son of Man;[2] The sleepers shall awake, and you who are yet awake, Having been fully awakened to Him, shall be caught up With them to meet The Lord in the air, as it is written; And forever shall you be with The Lord...[3] Purify your faith! Purify your worship! Purify your houses!... Do it now! Says The Lord God, Creator of Heaven and Earth. Thus says The Holy One of Israel: I have come not to make peace, but war, even war in My members - a great division,[4] the scourging of nations, the wrath of God! For the fulfillment of all that is written is at hand, and shall progress quickly. Yet for the sake of the elect, it shall be cut short. Beloved of My heart, be not troubled nor weep, for these things must be. Then the end shall come, and I shall reveal My glory. Behold, I shall cleanse the sanctuary and restore the garden, and you shall learn war no more[5] - NO MORE! Says The Lord. For I died; behold, I am risen! And so as I died, sin has also died in those who love Me. And that which leads My people into sin shall also be destroyed, ground to dust beneath My feet, carried away upon the winds of restoration, which I am... Behold, The Morning Star is risen, the universe is filled with His glory! And that glory shall abide with men, even in them and among them! I shall be a Father unto them, and they shall be My beloved children, forever! Lo, a return to innocence, paradise lost is paradise found, a return to the garden - the universe, your playground. Thus I have spoken, so shall it be: The mystery of God revealed, The counting of days no more... Forever young in the presence of Your Shepherd, your Redeemer, your Father, Your Brother, your Most Beloved Friend... The fulfillment of all things For which your hearts have groaned... I AM THE MEANING OF LIFE! And all who live in Me, and I in them, will live forever!" I prefer hymns to the hokey-ness that I feel when I hear the music at the more contemporary church services. It doesn’t make me feel like singing it, it makes me feel silly when I try to sing along. It is more a distraction. For instance I’m usually confused by and stare at the clear plastic cage the drummer is in wondering if they locked him it from there my imagination goes off the rails until the pastor begins speaking again. I don’t feel that way when the hymns are used with a good choir, guitar and/or piano/organ, i have a more community connected sense when we are able to follow the hymnals together.
@kristophstjames41433 жыл бұрын
exactly- that's because it's about the performers on stage- You can't glorify Jesus if "man" is in the center of the attention. I don't sing along either - it's ridiculous, often, in the church that I attend. They will just have the piano play while the congregation sings a hymn, that's the way it should be. When I was on a church mission, I went to lots of different church denominations. There was a Methodist church that I attended for a Christmas service, and they alternated contemporary Christian music with hymns. There was a wonderful Spirit in the congregation when the hymns were played, but it seemed to get driven out once the contemporary music was played.
@lsrose3 жыл бұрын
In my small Methodist church, a number of years ago some members started a worship band complete with electric guitars and drums. At first it was great and they were a talented group, but as time went on it became a source of contention between older and younger members. Then we went to a blended service, which included CCM and hymns. Finally, our pastor, who was younger than me, decided the CCM wasn’t good for our church and decided that we needed to go back to traditional hymns. The praise band was allowed to continue to play the hymns, sometimes in a different way to add to them. Everyone seemed to like it. But alas, the praise band was largely a younger group, and one by one they quit. We are back to traditional hymns with an exceptional piano player, who will occasionally change things up with the music of a hymn but not fundamentally change the tune. Most of us are genuinely happy.

@@lsrose That reminds me of this catholic church a friend of mine used to go to. They did a LOT of...I guess mariachi interpretation of catholic hymns. When the old priest retired, the 20 something priest came in and cut that off immediately. He wasn't having any of it, explaining that it didn't evoke a spirit of reverence for why people are there and what is supposed to be happening there. I am not a Christian, but that actually struck a chord with me. Why are you there? Is what you're doing there evoking the level of respect that God deserves or is it there to entertain you and keep you awake during church? I think it's a fair question to ask when you're directing any aspect of service.

@@azurephoenix9546 that’s exactly right. At first our praise band was great and created a whole new level of energy for worship. But as time passed I think we all could see that it wasn’t creating the reverence that we needed. Methodists are just that…methodical in worship. In our traditional service we have a very defined order of worship and it works for me. Very structured and allows me to ‘get into the reverent mindset’ so to speak. We don’t have a Sunday night service anymore so it would have been great to have the praise band play on Sunday nights. I’m not sure why they didn’t. But I love the old hymns!

One is by Phil Thompson, the other by Sunny Tranca. I highly recommend listening to both, and comparing the lyrics, sentiment and the music, just to view the same theological concept from different angles, the warrior Jesus and the fierce comforter and protector Jesus. It is heartbreaking how they crucify the harmonic possibilities in the simplest hymn, and forget that they are to lead, not overpower. Thanks for your comment. God bless.
@stupidlyfamous3 жыл бұрын
As a lead guitarist in a worship band, I wanna start by saying thank you for this perspective, keeping us Christians accountable for the things that we say that we are. Yes, there are some questionable people at the forefront of what the mainstream knows as the Christian poster child. That’s all the more reason for for a person to get into their Bible, have a relationship with God, learn about Jesus and his teachings, and that way you can discern what is of God and what is false pretense. Those guys on Katie Perry’s bus obviously did not have God with them. They could have very easily removed themselves from the situation. I won’t deny that there is a few stagnant characteristics of some CCM, but it boils down to the heart, as someone below has already said. When I am at rehearsal, that’s time for me to give everything I’ve got to Him. When I am on stage during a service, that’s also my time to give everything I’ve got to Him. Because that what He deserves. The best of my abilities at the current time are different than the best of the abilities of the other worship leaders. And so finding a common ground where it’s not elementary and also not a concert is where you’ll likely find your stagnation with the musical structure. But rest assured, all of us that are on stage are 100% for the Lord. We aren’t paid. We are a small church, so I don’t think you can consider us famous. Also, we are very choosy about the songs from some of the very same bands you’ve mentioned that we play. If even one word is biblical or alludes to being unbiblical, it’s out. The idea is to bring people to Jesus in an atmosphere that feels safe for people to reflect inward, lay their sins down, and and reverently take up their cross. I think truthfully your discomfort towards CCM is rooted in the blatant hypocrisy of relatively small sample of Christians. Also I think it’s fair to say that you’ll be hard-pressed to find a church that doesn’t have flaws. Church is a hospital for souls, not a sanctuary for the saved. Which leads me to my question/challenge. If you are in a church that is tied up in some of these things, rather than leaving to appease your own agenda, stand up in your faith and called them out on it. Get out your Bible and respectfully show them where they are wrong. but also be receptive to their answer. The outcome should always be glorifying to God.

I love the Lord and I believe in the Gospel and that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and that no one goes to the Father except through him. John 14:6. I sing on the worship team at the church I attend, and I may not be the best when being compared to others out there, but my heart is in it for the Lord. When I get up to sing, it's about my mindset, my heart, and my WHY! Why I'm doing it is most important...to praise and bring Glory to the Lord who created me. It boils down to, what is the hearts intentions, what's the motivation behind why people are doing it. God is after the hearts of sinners. Jesus even asked the tax collector to follow him. Jesus is after the heart of ALL, whether you claim to be a keyboard player, guitarist, singer, drummer, etc. If someone is portraying to play an instrument but truly can't, and are lying about it, then pray for them and encourage them to be honest and ask for lessons. Don't laugh and make fun of them. Everyone has told a lie or sinned in some way. We're not perfect, only Jesus is perfect. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the people in this video is lying about something. It's about the heart and the intent. There is nothing wrong with singing for the Lord, just like David danced for the Lord. Everyone has a talent or gift that God blessed them with and it's okay to use it to Glorify him. Society puts to much criticism on the simplicity of loving the Lord. It's just like anything else that skeptics and society does to anything out there, judge, critique, and if it doesn't line up with what you think, it's wrong. Bottom line, it's about first being convicted in the heart about your own faults, plucking the thorn out your own eye before you go tell your brother to pluck the thorn out of his...hypocrisy! It's all in the Bible and Christians who love the Lord, get to know his true character and get to understand that Jesus went through trials, suffered for 40 days in the wilderness, hunger pains, thirst, pain, cold, fatigue, temptation from the devil and all the while, he never wavered in his faith this fullfil his Fathers plan for him. His crucifixion!!!! How many of us could do that? He is absolutely worthy of praise, worship and admiration for what he has done and still does for us. HE gets it done every second of everyday and HE is the reason you are here and wake up to a new day. Be careful what you say. Do not judge, lest you be judged. Again, it's about what's in the heart and only God can help change a person's heart. He works in his own ways, so if he uses another to speak life and truth into someone, even through the lyrics of a song or a melody, then he can and he will. Ultimately at the end of it all, those people have to face the Lord about their transgressions. The Bible, God's word, tells believers in Christ to hold each other accountable for actions and behaviors that don't align with what God says is appropriate. That's acceptable to do, but only when we wash our own hands clean first from our own faults. Again, hypocrisy and pride are not what God favors and he will resist the prideful and bless the humble. Humble yourselves and get to know the Lord and base your opinions off of his words instead of your own. Lean not on your own understanding, but on his word. He is after the hearts of man because the heart is dead without him in it.

It's pretty vapid stuff. I love a lot of rock music, but if I want to listen to secular music, then I just put on secular music. It's not even about drum beats or slower melodies, since some deeply anointed, true praise music, like Keith Green, is a terrific cross between Chris de Burgh and Billy Joel. So it's not about beat and tempo, when you can have all that w/ real anointing and profound and biblically sound lyrics. You could never mistake a good Christian artist for a top 40 love song either.

A real eye-opener. I'm now 70, so I was blessed to have lived in the era of the 70s when there was so much great spiritual worship ... and it seemed it was far more about substance and ministry. Then around 1980 I read an article about how the CCM industry was bought up by bean counters. The first thing they did was to fire Randy Stonehill ... because he was too old ... and Bob Bennett .. because he was too overweight. Sex sells, so they only wanted slender young sexy artists. They also put out this edict: "Singer songwriters ... we want no more I got saved you get saved too songs. Get commercial ... or get lost." I've been writing songs since the late 70s, but they are all about reaching out to the lost and about edification, which can mean challenging. I've been trusting God to make a way ... where there appears to be no way. I do believe we are way overdue for the rise of a music industry more bent on ministry than money

Expose the bad stuff. Love it. Many of the reasons I started a college in 2000 that is serious about spiritual growth, professional skill in music, and academic knowledge of music for Christians to really commit to discipleship and serious musical work. There are many serious, passionate, creative Christians who are working with skill and character and can't stand the stuck place of the genre and work to stay away from the dark side of music and touring too. So much more to say but there are some significant future artists breaking through these problems.

When Clayton talks about the band member who couldn't play their instrument, it reminded me of an experience I had. I saw Audio Adrenaline in concert in Philadelphia. I was standing right next to the sound board. I'd always thought Bob Herdman was the keyboardist of the band, but during this show he is playing guitar. At least he pretended like he was. I pay close attention to musicians and I'm noticing that there is no sound coming out his guitar- his strumming is not matching anything coming out of the speakers. So between one of the songs, I yell over to the guy on the board and say "There's nothing coming out of his guitar!" He points at Herdman's channel on the board and it is turned basically down to zero. He tells me "That's because he can't play!" The more I watch the more comical it became. He was the most animated of the bunch- jumping around, etc- and the reason is now obvious- it didn't matter how accurate his strumming was, no noise was coming out. I said to the sound guy "I thought he was the keyboardist anyways." He replied "He sucked at that too." The best part was when they did band member introductions with each member doing a quick little jam after their name was called. When they got to Herdman, the sound guy yelled over to me "Watch this!" As soon as Herdman's name was called, the sound guy popped his channel up from zero up to a ten, Herdman plucked a few high notes, and then the sound guy popped it back down to zero for the rest of the show. Pretty hilarious to watch. Another show was All Star United. Probably one of the best Christian rock concerts I saw. Was talking to the band afterwards and asked them how I could pray for them. Ian responded that I should pray for unity among the band members. He explained that everything was great but that life on the road tends to fracture relationships. When I pursued that and discussed faith among band members, he responded that a lot of the bands that were out there at the time (the 90's) had members who weren't Christians at all but were just in it for the money and that can add a lot of stress to the process (he didn't say that was true of them). Interesting stuff.

I have no problem with him calling out CCM band members for not being able to play their instruments, but for him then to turn around and say the same thing does not go on in secular music is completely disingenuous. Interesting in the video, the host keeps referring to his guest speakers as.. "self-identified Christians" It took me some years to realize much of my favorite CCM songs are direct biblical references. They paraphrase or speak exactly of certain passages. There is a huge variety all different kinds of music including worship music, oftentimes worship music is favored by somewhat defined lines. Elder members and it would seem Catholics would prefer the old style hymns, whereas younger people or Gen x I guess prefer the more modern worship music. For myself, born and raised jewish, began by chance, and then self-study in the Bible and finally came to Christ on my own. I am a christian. Not a self-identified christian. Just a christian. And it turns out the music that I like, so many of the words come straight from his. Suggestion listen to more of what you do like. The title of the video is almost offensive. And my understanding is that the Beatles when they were in England were vilified only to be loved here in america, and that rock and roll in the 50s was all but banned depending on what part of the country you live that was far too outrageous. There are some I would say so-called Christian artist that I don't like their music I choose not to listen to them, and it seems very commercialized much like Christmas is with Santa claus. Or Easter for that matter. Speaking of which how about for Easter instead of hunting for eggs children make crosses out of popsicle sticks and learn what it's all about

Technically, Easter's not about the cross. Good Friday's about the cross.

Im a practicing Christian and I cant stand modern praise and worship music. My biggest gripe with the genre is that it all sounds exactly the same. They all sound whiny and fake.

Agree! It all sounds the same! CCM from the 1990s was excellent, and very distinctive! Rich Mullins, The Winans, Michael Card etc.!

"All right, guys, this is gonna be so easy. All we have to do to make Christian songs is take regular old songs and add Jesus stuff to them. See? All we have to do is cross out words like "baby" and "Darling" and replace them with Jesus." ~ Eric Cartman, Faith +1 That said. CCM literally embodies the definition of a "hack writer." 🎤⏬

For real though, Eric Cartman wrote more melodious songs in his Faith +1 album than today's CCM.

Christian music, via a friend, was what drew me to Jesus, and has encouraged me on my 38 walk with him. People have been tearing down CCM that whole time for various reasons - legalism, jealousy, narrowmindedness....all sad things. i lived in Nashville in the 90's for 7 years and crossed paths with many in CCM. Everyone in it is human, as am I, so we are all fallen, but I think it's a very genuine genre based on the many artists I met. Many CCM record companies were sold to secular companies and that did change parts of the industry. I think it's just sad at the Christians and non-Christians that continually throw stones at CCM.

Honestly as an atheist i didn't ever care about this genre and i couldn't possibly understand the spirit i guess behind the lyrics but this is interesting to listen to. I would love to see more of this type of content. A like from me.

As someone who tries to live a life after Christ, it is tough to get into the modern worship music scene because it feels like often the same recycled feel good lyrics vs. anything challenging or admitting real issues of the soul or within the church itself. There were some good exceptions in the 90s and early 2000s, but the past decade has basically turned into everyone copying the same top worship bands/leaders like Bethel, Hillsong, Chris Tomlin, Elevation, etc.

Checkout Neal Morse, he was formerly the co-founder of the LA Progressive Rock band "Spocks Beard". He has quite a few albums and side projects that are Christian based and secular, and plays with astounding musicians. To be honest, I wonder if he is even _known_ in the Christian market because the music may be beyond the industry.

I'm in the process of auditioning for my church's worship team and when the lead worship pastor was talking with me about my faith musical ability, he said the guitar has tonal versatility and I don't have to fit in the copy of the typical ambient worship guitar sound and I have some tonal independence within reason. Really interested in seeing how versatile.

Reborn Christian here 🙋♀️ I didn't know much about the CCM industry before watching this video and I've never actually listened to CCM or Gospel music. It's always felt insincere, generic and has never 'spoken' to me or drawn me to explore it more. I don't go to church or worship meetings either. It might sound cheesy but I find more truth in rock and metal lyrics and these are the only genres that truly expose or discuss the serious issues and don't sugarcoat everything. The comment you made about it being a safe and non challenging place for Christians is very true! Not just with music but when it comes to discussing other aspects of the Bible or the lost books of the Bible. I have never heard a church discussing prophetic or apocryphal books and this is exactly what fascinates me! No church has ever been able to introduce me to God or make me feel close to Him. The only place I could feel connected was in nature and by myself. Christianity has been very distorted and so many people are confused and blind. The church has been and still is the biggest problem with Christianity.

There are churches out there that are truly dedicated to following Jesus and authentic, but it does take time to truly search for those churches. The great news is most churches now have their services posted online on their website or KZbin or Facebook page, so it is a lot easier to check them out quickly.

Not at all judging you Savannah, but I urge you to seek Jesus with all your heart. There's no better friend than Jesus. He's always there. Spend time praying daily. Read the Bible daily, Worship daily. Asking the Lord into your life is just the beginning of being a Christian. Christianity is about a growing relationship with your Lord and Saviour. God bless and I hope these words find you well.

To effectively do CCM, one MUST have a '73 Thinline Telecaster and/or a Taylor acoustic. There's a great little book published in 1999 called Snakes in the Lobby....
