I think its also due to, in big part, the massive influx of people from outside of that community. Most people who played ACNL or ACWW or AC were pretty chill and pretty OG- The game was big but definitely not BIG like ACNH. And with that burst, came new people, and thus, new problems.
@NintendoHero2 жыл бұрын
The AC community is 90% chill, but man that other 10%. My experience with New Horizons was so different from New Leaf, in both good and bad ways. Feeling connected to an online community is great, but I also kind of miss the more personal and private times with past games. For example I have both Marshall and Raymond on my island, but I don't even really like either of them. I just invited them to my island because I knew how famous they were, and now I don't feel like I can let them leave. Where in New Leaf I didn't care about anything like that, and formed my own opinions about the villagers. So interesting to watch what happens when you throw 35 million players into an online community together

technically the "ability to time travel" has been more a function of keeping your game in-tune with the real world clock than anything. like if you live in pennsylvania but you go on vacation to cali, you need to be able to tell your game that so it accurately reflects daytime events. they obviously never intended for it to be a means of burning through a year's worth of gameplay in 3 weeks.

Eventually I created something in a small area that I absolutely loved and it helped me get over the envy of other islands and just love mine for what it was. I’m totally in love with my island now (admittedly, finding a pathing I adore has helped tremendously). Also, Raymond. I would never have bought him, but I did hunt for him. An AC friend actually went the mile with the campsite method and found him for me! She still doesn’t know to this day how much that meant to me because he moved into my island the day after one of my uncles passed. Raymond cheered me up, ngl. All my friend asked was that when I got Raymond’s photo if she could have it because she collects them and won’t let her villagers go until they have given her one. I was happy to do so. In contrast, I found Judy and she asked when she was ready to leave my island if she could have her and I told her yes. omg thank you for talking about this. ive always loved animal crossing. ive noticed that ever since new horizons came out the community just went from kind and helping to passive agressive and just… kinda bleh. obviously, not the whole community, but its increasingly obvious that the animal crossing community mainly has the reputation of being “wholesome “ due to the nature of the actual game. to me, the community can be just as bad as others. Aya Kyogoku, the director of new horizons, ended up deleting her twitter because people were spamming her with anger over the no cloud save data :( every time i think about i just feel disgusted. maybe its just because i develop attachment to the people who make the games i love, but i often feel people forget the ones making games for us to play are real people. and that seems to spill over into players interacting with other players. also, when you were talking about pride/envy, i related so much 😭 i always feel scared to even take a little bit of inspiration from people i admire because i dont know if theyre the kind of person to think im “stealing” their build/idea. people will say animal crossing is not a competition, and up until new horizons i would have agreed (new leaf if you count the hacking people did, but within base game i feel there wasnt much decorating to do lol) but to me i feel like the game is now trying to one up each other all of the time. its stressful! it can be hard to ignore, even if you try to avoid it. now, im a decorating fiend, but i do kinda hope the next AC goes back a bit to its roots and not only has top notch decorating options, but more to do in terms of like, “set” gameplay i guess? just something else to be doing to take a break from decorating every now and then, because i find myself turning on the game, running around doing nothing because im not feeling motivated to decorate, thinking every design idea has already been done and that my island isnt going to be different enough, and shutting the game off. i love ac so so so much, its my favorite video game franchise of all time. new horizons isnt the most perfect game ever, but no game is. and that applies to the fans and community too.

Admittedly, I was kind of expecting "wrath" to bring up the whole thing with how people like to hate and bully "ugly" villagers or ones that they find overrated (Raymond being an infamous example.) I definitely think being angry at the developers is more toxic, but I did feel like bringing this up since it is one of my least favorite parts about the AC community. I respect people not liking certain villagers, but what bothers me is when they try to protest against certain villagers by petitioning Nintendo to remove them or make a whole group dedicated to hating them. Obviously, these are fictional characters, so they don't have feelings, but since a big part of AC is building up friendships with these villagers, there are people who care about these villagers because they've made memories with them and would be hurt to see them removed from future titles.

What bothers me a lot with it is when people bully villagers for very real features people can have. Like eyes a certain distance apart or a unibrow. It isn't all the hate, but when it comes to real features that people have (especially ones typically made fun of), it just feels wrong. I remember reading a comic a few years ago about a girl that was always insecure and ashamed of her unibrow, but as she grew up, she learned to embrace it. So Hazel and her unibrow is the prime example for me for that. Especially since criticism I've seen is literally telling her to shave it or that "she would be cute if she didn't have it." It's fine to not like certain features and all, but since some of that stuff is stuff that people have to deal with irl, it just feels like a shallow reminder of beauty standards. Again, it's not everyone who hates an "ugly" villager or anything, but I've definitely seen it and it's the part I really dislike. And yeah, the petitions to remove them and such are the ones I also dislike the most. I found one KZbinr that made a whole video about it and I thought "oh it'll be the generic ugly ones everyone says" but it was mostly other villagers that weren't even that bad or just forgotten. And the KZbinr's tone was so "I hate it I hate it I hate it, get rid of it, it makes me so mad" and it was genuinely just an uncomfortable video to watch. I'm autistic so maybe there was some light hearted nature to it that I missed, but it just felt so angry and mean compared to other people talking about their least favorite villagers that I just couldn't. :/ I get not liking a villager, I absolutely hate Cobb because he reminds me of a Muppet that creeps me out and he gives me anxiety just looking at him, but mostly I just try to ignore his existence. The part of the fandom I see that does that is typically those that make content regularly and it's much less apparent in normal fandom communities (basically regular people that just share.) Like it's still there, but it's definitely less so. It just really rubs me the wrong way a lot of the time. I get it's probably light hearted or meant to be overdramatic, but it just comes off way too mean and uncomfortable to watch or, worse case scenario, just makes me sad cause it's a villager I love. Obviously everyone will have their favorites and least favorites and i am slightly used to it due to how people are in the Pokemon community (I love some regularly hated Pokemon that even my friend has said to me they want gone when I'm just saying I love them), but it feels like when people hate a villager, then NO ONE can like that villager. Obviously most people aren't like that, but it is prominent enough to be a problem.
@KatelynJewel2 жыл бұрын
@@hannahdavis4256 I agree. Hazel's unibrow is a big part of what makes her unique, and without it, I think she looks generic which is my problem with trying to make "ugly" villagers look cute in general. Katt became my first favorite in New Leaf because I love cats, and I thought the way her face looked was unique, plus her sisterly personality made her feel like a best friend, especially when she gave me medicine after seeing I was stung. People often say she looks like a vampire, but that's what I like about her; she's quirky but still cute. The villager I feel gets treated the worst in the community is Rodney. He became infamously hated because of a Subreddit called FuckRodney which is dedicated to abusing him and making hateful jokes about him. I felt bad for this poor little hamster, so I bought his Amiibo card and added him to my island, then he became my new favorite. I personally think he's adorable. I love how geeky he looks with his freckles and his game room. He has droopy eyes that make him look like he's always sleepy. I do admit he looks weird whenever he's shocked or does any other wide-eye expression, but to me his precious smile makes up for it (hence my profile picture) as well as how he loves to sing a lot. Another thing he's commonly criticized for is his pink hair clashes with his teal fur for some people, but I never minded this color combination.

I agree, sadly, i've gotten a lot of experiences with that sort of stuff, one of my comfort characters is overhated in the fandom because he's "annoying" and the other one is really popular so ofc there's going to be one mf saying that they hate him for no reason (this person actually said that they hated him just bc he was popular lmao) so yeah, can't escape those people.

As a veteran player that has been out there playing since the release of the very first games, I can say that the best advice you could have given is to go back to the old games! I personally love new horizonts. Yes, they took out A LOT of things that we really miss, but it also brought a lot of new features that have unlocked a...different type of enjoyment to it. However, the spirit and the vibes of the older games, especially when speaking about their communities can be SO different sometimes. If you are feeling tired or unmotivated with your island or with the whole ACNH in general, I would recommend that, if you can afford it, take a little break from NH and go to some of the other games! Especially if you are a "newborn" into the AC games. It is a little bit of a "You don't know what you have util you lose it" type of situation. I am sure that once you realize all of the things that you don't have in the older games, when you go back to NH you will have a lot of ideas and inspiration on how to use all the new resources that the game provides you with.
@En_Joshi-Godrez2 жыл бұрын
Its more the butchering of the characters that upsets me. AC, besides the narrative stuff with a select few characters like nooks family, has no story that can be missed by playing a later game. Ergo, there should be no reason as to why you should need to play an older title. But thats just isn't true, because they keep watering down your relationships you form with them. The orginal AC help instrumentally with my aspergers and anxiety because of the bonds i formed with both the community and my villagers. What they did to lazy and snooty villagers makes me feel like im playing a Truman show rendition of AC, which is the completely antithetical feeling i want from playing these games. I really hope the next title reduces the social media aspect, and makes it more about your own experience.

Envy really hit home for me. I love watching and listening to animal crossing content, but I haven't played it in months. I felt although my island would never be good enough. I'd never have enough bells or nook mile tickets to be happy. I'd never have all my favourite villagers, and I'd never be doing anything but grinding for materials. I saw all these other people with beautiful islands, and began to realise I would never be like that. I had a similar experience with pretty much every Roblox game as a kid, and it was happening again now. Envy and perfectionism were what my motivation to play was built on, and ended being why I've left it behind.

@gayrobloxgirl2 жыл бұрын
i dont think people realize that animal crossing could have easily forbid time traveling, but they chose not to. they LET YOU time travel, even if they say its shameful. the best example of anti time traveling mechanics is miitopia and tomodachi life, they softlock you for a day if you time travel not letting you get new items or travelers. animal crossing could do the same thing. but they dont. they let you, and its an acceptable way to play to them. its not a sin to time travel, people need to realize that
@eldupont30952 жыл бұрын
its because they feel they are in competition with other players to make a 'good' or 'impressive' island, and they know that the game is intended to be played in real time. So they feel that purposefully time traveling to progress through the game is "cheating" because you can unlock and collect things more quickly that way. So suddenly, the no-time-travel player, that thinks they are in competition with the time-traveling player, finds themself at a disadvantage. The person that is time traveling has more stuff and more bells, and it's "not fair" - its a strange mindset for a non-competitive game.

I miss being able to go back in time to experience events I missed while I was too busy to play the game. The fact Nintendo acquiesced to the people complaining about time traveling honestly killed the game for me (especially since it was a non issue). I don't have the time to play every day of the week. Used to be that I could enjoy events in my own time, but when they started forcing you to play on the exact IRL date the events happened was the exact moment I couldn't bother with the game anymore. What are your thoughts on having dedicated menus within animal crossing games just to change the time? If the developers said time traveling is shameful, I wonder why they added a way to time travel without even leaving the game.
@Daehpo2 жыл бұрын
I know the core concept of the series is "in-game time is tied to real time", but I wish there was an option to de-synch & let time only pass while playing. Being able to go to bed & skip a day or "sleep till noon"... Maybe straight up skipping ahead a season. If they actually implemented in-game time travel they could prevent players from going backwards in time.

New Leaf kind of had that, you just talk to Isabelle to change the date and time. You don't even need to go to the home menu. It definitely is the easiest and most convenient game to time travel in. It also helps that its loading screens take like 5 seconds.

About time travel, I've wondered a lot about why they added an in game clock in new leaf that's independent of the one from the console so that if you change it, you don't mess with other games that are affected by the console clock and so you don't have to open and close the game to do so. It's specially strange because the developers are against time traveling and they removed this feature in new horizons.
@miyakogfl2 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, they're probably fine with people adjusting the time so the town works with their work schedule or whatever, they just didn't intend for people to be warping forward in time constantly to play the game ultra fast. I'm not sure why they removed it though. Maybe just due to the fact that the Switch syncs its time via the internet, idk. I don't really hold it against people for doing so since I'd be a hypocrite to do that since I did it all the time on AC GC, but for me it makes the game less fun to jump ahead to everything all at once. I almost certainly would have quit playing NH by now if I did that this time, but I am still playing daily today!

The one island per switch is the original idea. The creator of the game said he wanted a game where people can play at different times but still together. Totally agree. I only recently got New Horizons and while I love it for the most part, there were some things that bothered me that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Having watched this video, I realized that it really must be the whole community that exists around it these days: There is so much admittedly really incredible content out there, so much creativity, but oh my god does it make it hard to be happy with your own island, even if you're trying hard not to compare it to others. There was a beauty about not being able to change anything about your town in the older games apart from placing a bridge or bench in New Leaf, even though it was frustrating sometimes because some unwanted villager plopped their house down right where you were planning on putting your park once someone finally suggested a new PWP (looking at you, Hazel). I love the idea of being able to make your town/island your own, but I do think that there is maybe "too much" freedom being handed over to the player too fast in New Horizons. I don't know. I'm bummed and really miss having something to work for like we had in the older installments. On another note, that Hotel Dusk soundtrack at 6:10 tripped me so hard. That's been my ringtone for the past 10 years, partially because it's so rare to hear it anywhere (and because I loved that game way too much, the whole soundtrack and atmosphere of it were just incredible and I really wish they hadn't ruined the sequel like they ended up doing... okay, rant over.). Started frantically looking for my phone until I realized it was just background music.

10:37 To be fair, sure. Previous entries didn't let you have different towns, the systems they were on only locked you to one account. With the Switch, you're able to have 8 different accounts. So it's only natural that it, like many other games on the Switch, let them have their own separate saves. Especially since one of the main focuses of this game is being able to decorate your island however you want. I can't imagine having to share mine with 7 or let alone 3 other people.
@amandaslough1252 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. The previous entries only offered one town per memory card/cartridge, but all games allowed for up to 4 players. How it worked changed based on system. Gamecube had all 4 players with small houses (main, 2nd floor, and unfinished storage basement) around a singular plaza always directly south of the train station. DS had all four sharing a classic 6 room house, sleeping in the attic when not playing. Wii had everyone with their separate houses again, in preselected spawn points, but 2 stories with finished basement and attic. 3DS had separate 6 roomed houses with fully expanded sizes. And now Switch with 6 rooms and up to 8 players. And, by the time ACNH released, most major first party switch games only offered one file per account (BotW, Odyssey, and Pokemon being major examples. The former two being very questionable from being a series that usually let you have 3 save files).

I ended up getting around 30 to 40 people to come sell turnips, and some of them came back around 20 to 30 times. Plus a few people paid me more because they liked my island and wanted to show extra support to the fact I was helping my sister. Before I watch this vid- I just want to say an untarnished experience. When I got this game, it was because my best friend recommended it. Took a bit of pushing- but I finally caved and went ahead and hit the bullet and was- after a few days- pleasantly surprised! For context- my favorite games center around survival games like Don’t Starve, The Isle, Day of Dragons, and Primal Carnage- you can see the pattern I’m sure. The tamest of my roster is Pokemon. So this game was significantly different for me. And as you can imagine, my experience with online players is and always will be a cesspool. I got to the point I’d mute communication because people are just awful. With this in mind, after a few months of playing (I do not time travel) I decided to dip into turnips. My first shot was a massive failure because I had no idea what I was doing. So I decided instead of diy screwing myself, I’d “cheat” and look up help. Which is where I discovered the Turnip Calculator and Discord Turnip Exchange. The latter honestly TERRIFIED me. Mainly because that meant dealing with people. What did they want for this service? Could I even meet demand of what they asked? Would I get jipped? If I opened my island, Someone was sure to be an absolute ass…. So much fencing to do- But I had already bought all my moneys worth of turnips- and I literally couldn’t afford to just call it a loss. So- in I went and…. Dear god a game has never overhauled my fears so fast and made me ashamed. Everyone was super cool, didn’t ask anything (most of the time tbf- but didn’t demand) and sometimes even just left gifts for the help when I opened my island afterward when prices were good. This community is the exact opposite of my norm and such a breath of fresh air that everyone is just in it to help one another. I’m so glad that my fiend offered this island to me because all of you in this community have been the legit best! Edit: ok. So the first thing I covered in my og comment- but my experience so far has been very help thy neighbor. The villager market- yeah…. I kinda knew about it- but the Mask Boi series ep “In Boxes” REALLY put that into mind how…. Technically unethical it is. I mean yeah FR these are only data at the end of the day- but it’s data I personally care about and definitely will not be participating. For the Pride thing- haven’t really looked into those people, but I’m more than sure they exist because of experiences I’ve had in other games. And honestly- you can’t copyright designs in this game. I mean- it makes no sense. Envy- well that goes without saying, especially coming from someone with extreme self loathing issues. But this game honestly has been helping me and I’m tinkering slowly to build up (currently on hold because these two roses REFUSE TO GIVE ME A DAMN PURPLE) Lust- funnily enough I saw the clean version of that first, and it was really cool to see. I genuinely thought someone went back and went cringe mode on it. So eh… but as for someone who loves anthro art- yeah. I knew it was only a matter of time before I bumped into something eye roll worthy. (Took literal seconds) Wrath- eh. Sure the game slowly becomes repetitive, and eventually that will be the sad end of my interest of this game, but that’s any game ever. You’d wish for updates for all the stated- but we can only hope for more in the next game. (Sometimes they listen) Gluttony- yeah I’ve played this game so much. I’ve slowed down due to simply focusing on getting a blue rose, but I may have binge hits occasionally. (I do not time travel. I’m too lazy)

i never understood handpicking villagers and selling them or trying to get the one you want… one of the funnest thinggs in animal crossing is never knowing who youre gonna get, then befriending the ones you get. not choosing it is the fun part imo, albeit it does mean my favourite animal crossing characters are the most random and unpopular ones but thats ok! theyre special to me regardless of their appearance

i honestly hate the whole villager situation in NH. in NL you were randomly given a set and you dealt with it--and you made the occasional friend. not only that they left whenever they wanted to and had their own personalities. but in NH i don't like having the freedom of choosing the villagers. It sounds weird but its true.

No I get you, we have too much power in NH. Like I miss flowers dying because I neglected them (like in real life) instead of them multiplying like crazy. Same with villagers: they used to feel more like their own individuals choosing to stay or leave when they wanted, instead of waiting for our “permission”.

To add some wholesome stuff, ACNH is genuinely one of my favorite games and thanks to this game along with MW'19, Xenoblade Definitive Edition and Yakuza Like a Dragon, they all made my 2020 genuinely one of my favorite years despite the pandemic. I got to play more with my real life friends and online, which made the year much more barrable.

Im so sick of people blaming minus8 or zone for that incident. I was legitimately traumatised by the zone one, but i have no one to blame except me. They put those animations on the websites that wanted them and there is a warning telling you exactly what the animation is before it starts. I consented to see it. If you didn’t, then you saw it in a way that was not intended by the artist, ergo, it is erroneous to blame the artist. The unfortunate reality is trolls can take the content without the artist content, and put it on platforms that did not concent to, to cause the ignorant people that saw it to become hostile towards a group that doesn’t want to cause hostility. They KNOW the consequence of that.

My new horizon horror story involved trying to join a community who advocated not doing "time traveling" or exploitation of any kind, and the leader of the community got caught doing so during the first week after launch, and when I called them out on it, they then doxxed me and had their "marine friend" threaten to 'unalive' me, saying that because they were a "marine" they could 'unalive' me "for the free world" over getting caught exploiting in AC:NH.. like holy crap..

I remember having some sort of animal crossing burn out back in 2020 or 2021. At that time I followed the topic animal crossing on Twitter so obviously I saw lots and lots of amazing islands, as well as island tours on KZbin. I was forcing myself to make a perfect island just like what I saw on socials. I time traveled to play every. single. day. of. the game. It was draining. It was harder and harder for me to keep doing this every time I played the game. I was so perfectionist that my island didn't look like what I saw on socials made me actually unhappy. I couldn't play anymore and was considering completely reseting my island. I decided to not see anything related to acnh Islands on socials, unfollowed the topic on Twitter, and stopped time traveling. I accepted my island for what it was and stopped comparing it to others. This made me able to play the game again, even though the game isn't really interesting anymore. I still time travel when there is something I want or need to do, like listening to kk slider's concerts when I want a specific song. All the pressure to have a perfect island and the underwhelming amount of actual content is what killed the game for me.

I've fallen for...honestly about 5/7 of the sins. This is a "Wrath" post to explain my "Sloth" & "Gluttony". For context on my experience with the series, I've started with Wild World & have at least tried every game sans City Folk (& Amibo Festival). I play primarily for the environment & relaxing atmosphere. When I think of Animal Crossing I think of being in The Roost for Brewster's pipping hot cup of coffee. However, the game eventually begins to feel like a chore. Like if I want to achieve something then I need to make a chore out of playing the game. I know animal crossing was always meant to have a routine, but there's still a lot of restrictions that feel less like a nudge to take your time & more like a waste of time. Like the catalog for example, it's always been set up to unlock items after the player has obtained them. I feel like the catalog would be vastly improved if items that can be ordered from the catalog automatically unlocked in groups as they became obtainable (Like having Able Sisters open up unlocks clothing you can buy from them in the catalog). There could still be rare & seasonal items you need to check to see if its in stock, but shops could also just be generally cheaper & be better for buying lots of items at once(With this change I think the 5 item order limit would also be more acceptable, but IMO it's still annoying[especially for obtain crafting ingredients]). Completing the Museum is something that is initially fun, but can become tedious as you near completion. In particular Fossils; there are 73 unique fossils to obtain & every day you have 4 random fossils to obtain. Having to play everyday for the 'chance' to get one of the 3 fossils needed isn't fun, its annoying. If everyday a fossil was guaranteed to be one that hasn't been obtained/donated yet then it wouldn't be such a chore. (Also crafting. No duplicate recipes, let players craft blueprints, & bring in Bulk & Component crafting)

As for sloth, I’d rather suggest, being too lazy to pick up items you’ve dropped, because of full pocket space and/or storage. Let’s say there’s a reason why I updated Voltage so infrequently, let’s just leave it at that. I know there are more people out there like this.

Hooooo boy, who remembers Nookazon? I remember when shit was simple on that sight, people would sell items for a little above the in game price of bells, but then a little over a month later, the prices inflated to the point that a pair of 3D glasses (usually 490 bells) inflated to 200,000 MINIMUM. @@clorofolle Raymond was one of the 8 newly introduced villagers, and thus was rare since he didn't have a card. Plus, he's a cat, the hardest species to spawn the one particular villager you want. 2.0 released amiibo for everyone though so that's alleviated most issues. But there's certainly a reason he was super rare and coveted.

A little advice if you’re feeling creatively inadequate or stumped in Animal Crossing NH that I give to my friends. Try out designs in Paradise Planning. You can plan out ideas (obviously not terraforming) in the designer app or in the yards of villagers. You can even access the design portal while decorating a house in Paradise Planning! :) (Don’t forget Sable gifts you a TON of design patterns so go to her daily for each of 9 sets- they don’t take up custom slots and look quite nice) Count squares! I usually make a pattern that is just the outline of a square so I can measure stuff. You can also use a window pattern as long as you can see the ground/wall behind it. I build in this pattern for outside: -permanent (buildings and structures and terraforming) -trees and bushes -then ground patterns -furniture and fence placement -And then finally things like flowers and miscellaneous items to clutter! Tip: you can control flower production by putting ground patterns down to keep them from breeding! And to contain weeds if you want to use them as decor! For interiors you can plan a whole room with all the furniture in the catalogue through the designer app once it’s unlocked. Say you plan your house’s bathroom. Once you’ve designed it you take screenshots of each side of the room and write down all the furniture and the color of each item in a list. Then you can be focused on what items you need to buy/order and the ones that need to get redesigned by Cyrus. You can also keep track of what DIYs you need this way. Using your 4 photos as a reference you can slowly (or quickly if you TT) get all the furniture you need. A lot of players do what I did when I first started playing NH (I’ve been playing since the first GameCube title)- just throwing whatever looks like a bathroom into the bathroom. And then you get bummed because it looks- off. Paradise Planning gives us a lot more power over the catalogue so if you can dream it up you can make it happen! Also- control color! It’ll help your room appear more complete. Also- practicing decorating homes (I know a lot of people find it boring. I do too sometimes.) helps a bunch. My first houses are very funny looking compared to the builds I do now. I really enjoy thinking about what the villager would be doing in their shop, what their hobbies are, what their day to day life might be like, and try to build them accordingly. If you need inspiration for villagers go check out their New Leaf profiles! It makes for a lot of fun builds and the narrative helps give the space flavor! Also- never underestimate the power of Pinterest. You can learn interesting placements and combos- like for example you can put the cushion on top of the zen pillow to make a nice decoration for a very cozy book nook. :) Or you can put the banker’s lamp on top of the velvet stool for a very classy nightstand. I hope this helps anyone who’s struggling with the decorating side of things! No matter what it takes time to make anything in Animal Crossing! 💙 And even simple spaces are beautiful!
