I love that the Tetris story has ended this year in some way with BluScuti actually being the first to reach its functional end, level 157, 40 mins and 1,511 lines, then meeting its creator. I enjoyed the vid calic, gotta appreciate too when youtube actually recommends something fresh that hits, thats why I still enjoy this platform. Hope the algorithm treats you well.

Great video! I’ve always thought someone could make a great case for MS Windows Solitaire on a list like this. It didn’t invent casual gaming, but it certainly popularized it. And considering casual gaming accounts for such a significant chunk of the market for games, I think it warrants acknowledgment. Solitaire also has to be one of the most widely played games of all-time.

I agree. I was thinking Minesweeper, but Solitaire is a good choice.

Street Fighter 2 did have a secret glitch move called "Guile's Handcuff". When performed correctly the game would show Guile begin a throw but his opponent would freeze, would not be able to do anything, and be stuck to Guile. You perform the Handcuff move again as time is almost up and it would complete the throw damaging Guile's opponent and usually winning based on a higher life total. If you let the timer run all the way down to zero the game would lock up and you would have to restart the cabinet to fix the issue.

I think the Pac-Man rumors could stem from bootlegs, knockoffs, or hacks. Ms Pac-Man was not initially official; could be other small-time knockoffs that didn't go anywhere but some kid's cousin's neighborhood pizza dive.

11:45 - Old business machine? If the monitor is hooked up to an era correct system, we're talking about at least a Pentium class (probably 75-100 MHz) which is MORE than enough. I've seen Doom run fine on 486 SX 25 machines. I'm preparing a 386 SX 20 for sale (waiting for the paint to dry) and it has Doom on it. Now, it runs, but barely, the screen has to be pretty small. It is playable... but it's using hardware from the 80s. The fact that Wolfenstein can run on a V30 is impressive though.

I agree with your list. These are all pillars of the industry, minus a couple. But I wonder if it wouldn’t be better to sub-divide between arcade and home gaming. True some of these titles would bridge that gap. But most were influential in one setting over the other.

Great video! I'd argue that Super Mario Bros deserves the spot that you gave to Zelda, but you've made compelling arguments for all the games on this list. Can't wait to watch more videos from you!
@phaedrus0008 ай бұрын
I feel like not including Super Mario Bros ignores how important platformers were to retro gaming. The majority of games on 8-bit and 16-bit consoles were platformers, and Super Mario Bros defined that genre.
@calic7378 ай бұрын
I agree with that, I almost swapped out Pokemon or Pacman for Mario. There were a handful of other ones that I scratched off to cut it down to 7.
@chrisd62878 ай бұрын
Yea, I agree. If I had to make one change it would be smb for Pokemon. Pokemon was big but turn based RPGs were already a pretty well established genre. Smb was responsible for the trajectory of gaming for quite some time. Pretty awesome list tho.

Super Mario Bros. saved the entire video game industry. All genres were saved because of SMB.
@phaedrus0008 ай бұрын
@@frankhalgas3798 That's a bit hyperbolic. I don't think video games were ever gonna be just a fad, and the crash wasn't nearly as bad in Japan as it was in the US. But SMB did have a huge impact on the shape of gaming in those days. It set the standard for a long time to come.

all the games mentioned are absolutely worth praising as "the 7 wonders of Video Games" but i feel like 7 is too little, i would also add: Super Mario Bros: it massively changed the platforming genre despite not being the first actual platformer, it still introduced; handcrafted beatable levels that you can skip via secrets and power-ups that aren't temporary Super Mario 64: it introduced an adaptive camera in the 3D platforming genre, it perfectly showed how you can make open levels with "missions" you can do in any order and (feel free to correct me on this one) it introduced the 100% completion reward Minecraft: depending on how far you're willing to go with redstone and command blocks you can create damm near anything you want in it. It's a perfect representation of what happens when user generated content is a primairy pillar of a game. I also find it amazing that the game has existed for so long and is still going strong today Fortnite: this game should be financially impossible. pretty much every GTA game (but i guess the first game is enough for the purpose of this list): the franchise consistently shows the incompetence of every goverment that has a grudge against it. And it amazes me that Rockstar or Take Two didn't stop creating GTA games when they where actively being banned everywhere Mortal Combat: among some other games it's because of Mortal Combat we have the ESRB (and it's equivalants in other country's) Five Night's At Freddies: this game is possibly single handedly responsible for the internet (culture) we have today (as stated in of MatPat's final video's) The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time: this game introduced "Z-targeting", it cannot be understated how essential this mechanic is in every game that has the feature

you forgot to mention that street fighter 2 turbo was born because hackers gave superpowers to their characters by making them way faster an prolonging the atacks. and capcom just legitimized those hackes by implementing them to future versions of its own game. its the same that happened with nintendo and mario maker; by the time it came out we have been playing the unofficial version for pc for a decade before mm.
