Nice little score Mike laburnum is such a pleasure to turn, I've processed a lot laburnum over the years, when left in log form it takes forever to dry because of the waxey bark, that's why i peel it off, but that's just my humble opinion, have fun turning that lot, Will😊👍

I used latex painting to seal the first pieces of green wood I was given and it worked surprisingly well! I was brand new (still am really) and had only heard of sealing with wax or anchor seal, which I could find none of either remotely close to my area. I was so afraid of destroying or losing my free wood due to cracking, that I grabbed the only thing I could find. It's almost ready to turn and no cracks so far! *knock on wood* haha

Have you ever thought about making a wood kiln? I made one out of an old oven, the kind with the curly eyes on top. It can go as low as 150f. I cut a hole on one side and attached a metal bladed box fan. And on the other side I added an exhaust with a sliding baffle. It works like a charm. I can do the first turning of a piece of totally green wood to a wall thickness of about 3/4" - 1" and put it in the kiln and do the second turning in about 2-3 days. Using a moisture meter they usually come out of the kiln around 8-10%. I don't have the patience to shelf dry wood. 🤗

Luvverly stuff Mike. I just got a nice laburnum crotch in exchange for some olive burl at the local turning club in UK. Looking forward to a bowl or maybe two. Also raided a friends maple tree that has been down a few years and is spalted well. Some yew from the Oak Fair as well as Field Maple? for a go at a river table. Spent an absolute fortune on bits and tools and the car groaned a lot on the way back, but a big cheesy grin now, lots to play with.

Mike you might want to look into using paraffin wax to seal your would rather than wood glue. It also dries clear and it is substantially cheaper than glue. You could store it in an old crock pot and just turn the pot on when you need to seal wood and keep a brush in it and just warm it up whenever you need to use it.

Hi there Mike I must say that I found that very interesting and can’t wait personally for you to do whatever you’re going to do with them but I know that the word drawing is going to take a long time so it looks like it will be with you for the duration😉

Thanks for sharing that process, always wondered how you do that and how you go about storing wood to dry safely. Looking forward to seeing what comes from your gold mine there !!! Not sure what your petrol stations use for signage but here in the US I am fortunate enough to be able to get the old signs which are sheet polystyrene which goes well on a bench to keep glue and such from mucking up your work surface, and when you're done you can usually peel the glue off or just toss the whole thing in the trash.

That's interesting, the signage on our petrol stations are more permanent fixtures so are not really available, good idea though 😃

I have a cheap Microwave in the shed, purely to hasten the drying process. Also a couple of different size sledges for the appropriate size logs. It looked as if that last piece only just fit through the blade.

As a rule of thumb it take 1 year per 1" plus one more year to dry, I have seen Richard Raffan turn wet wood then dry it in the microwave, also to speed drying I have seen twice turn bowls where the bowl is rough out depending on size to about 1" wall thickens then sealed.

I find nearly every laburnum log of a good size has rot in the centre. I actually have some spalted laburnum drying on the shelf and like you, I use pva wood glue as it dries clear. I can then see the date marked on the end when it was processed and if despite the hard work it still checks.

One of the turners at our local club always turns his bowls wet. If you turn the other piece that marries the one you did the other way so that the bark stays on it should stay on when you finish turning it.

Thank you, Mike, very interesting. Please be sure to post us some updates over time! I am re-energised by your recommendation to use wood glue as a sealant. To be honest, I get such varied results whatever method I use, which disappoints me, but I have to reflect that it is not uncommon amongst even the experts.

Laburnum's beautiful. I'll have to keep my eye out for some. I've collected so much wood over the last month, I've nowhere to put it. Lots of monkey puzzle, oak and cherry. The wife's going mental.😅 And Monkey puzzle makes a right mess. I have no dry wood though. I'm experimenting with silica beads.

@MikeHolton I'm part turning a 10" cherry bowl at the moment. But I have a very underpowered lathe and crappy Chinese tools, so it's taking an eternity. It's frustrating because I love the hobby, but i massively underestimated the cost of a decent set up.

Great Information Mike, thank you for sharing. How fun was that turning green wood. Those big cuts and shavings are so enjoyable. The bowl came out great, curious to how it dries. Have you ever tried a mircowave to dry a roughed out green bowl? Have a great day sir! Scott
