the people that say "this is wrong and cheating I simply use a backpack and train alot"--are idiots. There is also the issue of age. An older person possibly with bad legs or feet or back cannot carry a heavy pack and go for miles. With a tow cart it opens up the distances and places a person can go.
@radicaldesign
@radicaldesign 5 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right Jeff. Sarah Marquis stated that her 20.000km expedition would never been possible without the use of the Wheelie. We even had a request from armed forces but declined for ethical reasons. So even the age or physical disability of a person does not have to be an argument. It does what you state: It opens up the distances and places and volume/weight of luggage you can take.

I would say you are right, if you can save energy for other important tasks why wouldn’t you? As long as you can carry this like a backpack over steep or rough terrain than it’s worth it.

About 30 years ago I used to do a lot of cross country hiking which included serious back country navigation etc. This was when GPS etc was in its infancy and some people were buying GPS. Similar comments were made about that 'if you can't navigate without a GPS then you shouldn't be out in the back country. Technology hasn't got a place in our passtime'. I found it interesting that the lightweight high tech material tents, backpack, shoes, shirts, sleepingbags etc etc were fine, the only thing you couldn't improve the technology on was 'map and compass'. But of course, SURELy they would be able to navigate without a compass, after all, that's technology... we don't want THAT spoiling our passtime. People need to get their heads out of their arses. There aren't rules (which it comes to what you use) for these things. You do you, and let others to themselves.

This is a great idea! Myself and other hunters train and can carry 300 pounds in our external frame hunting packs. Is thier currently a beefy version that can support 300 pounds? 150 kg?

Good design, better to pull 40kg than to lift. Save your energy. But I prefer larger wheels to overcome the rough road.

Hiking carts work great and the simplest is just to get a golf cart and attach a backpack. A big issue when hiking in the desert long distances is the heavy amount of water you must take. It simply is not practical to start out with a heavy pack including heavy tonnage of water. Another thing is rock collecting in which its not possible to carry a ton of rocks in the backpack ruining it and breaking the straps. I have done desert hikes that litterally would have been impossible without a tow cart. I actually did upload a video showing mine I made which was virtually free and works great a simple golf cart found for almost free with a backpack attached.

Could you set a wheelie skeleton up to use with a Brompton/Chubby/Cyclone set up? Would the skeleton pack down if needed to stow during a flight? I like the versatility of being able to stow the Brompton onto the wheelie if you hit a tight trail that's better by foot, and being able to stow or use the wheelie as a trailer when riding the Brompton...would be awesome if they all worked together and I didn't have to carry the Chubby/Cyclone set up on my back...

Unfortunately not. With the Cyclone trailers (Chubby or Trekking) you can walk as the wheels can go to the behind position. But that's different then the Wheelie Walking trailer. That has all to do with the angle in which it is designed.

Is two wheels better than single wheel hiking trailers (i.e. Dixon Rollerpack)? Why?
@radicaldesign
@radicaldesign 5 жыл бұрын
Not better just different use. The Wheelie is not suited for use in the mountains (although some disagree). It is made for long journeys over mostly flat surfaces. The biggest advantage over a one-wheeler for this purpose is that it's balanced and you don't need to hold the handlebars the whole journey. Imagine hiking for a year with the need to balance and hold the handle bars every day. But on rocky hills and forest-terrain certainly I see the plus of a one-wheeler.
@radicaldesign
@radicaldesign 5 жыл бұрын
@william dohn That sure looks very nice! I do think though that the Wheelies are for a different use group. The Radical Trailers go over the world some more then 20.000 miles. Tilting "off camber" wheels is beautiful but we really advocate as little technique as possible and keeping things super simple. Every functionality is another risk to break which you don't want crossing the Iranian dessert.

In 2020 I hope to walk from the Ross ice shelf to the Ronne ice shelf solo and unsupported in antartica, an artic expedition of around 1500 miles. It’s still in planning with looking for sponsors all the other good stuff. What I WILL need is a lightweight sled which I will be able to pull with 3months worth of gear and food on at a time. Would this company be willing to design a specific sled of this type? (Merely a question over KZbin I know)

Your gait isn't as natural if you're holding this instead of swinging your arms. Also harder to brace yourself if you trip. If you're on an actual mountain climbing route this would be a liability. Trekking poles are a far safer and more practical solution.

why do people not put in a drive chain and an electric motor and controls on the handle, lightest battery you can find and cheapest solar panel, the wheels will take the weight of the battery and drive system, and it will save you on hills and steeper slopes and just attatch the solar panel on top of your load and sorted.

Excellent quality, easy to use, easy to carry, and easy to become bankrupt and starve to death when you see the price. Hiking?, feel free to graze on the wild berries and grass, mushrooms and any other fruit you may find, as that is all you will be able to afford. Good luck on those cold nights as you freeze to death, having no tent as all your money went on a lightweight wheelie bin that is too small to climb into and die of starvation on a mountain top at christmas. Unless someone very old and rich bought you it, in which case, get insurance, because some other hiker is going to see this baby and wait until you are safely tuck ud up in your mountain hiker tent and shuffle it away in the dead of night, probably 2am, witching hour, Either way, cutting a segmant of old car floor pan, and ford cortina wheel and a triumph tr6 brake caliper a few welding adjustments and you wouldn't notice in serious difference in the two...apart from 2 tonnes and £600 in your pocket
@radicaldesign
@radicaldesign 6 жыл бұрын
Then you spend several days in the shed reinventing the the wheel(ie) with your expensive welding equipment and angle grinder drawing it on your expensive laptop you upgrade to the latest model every year for $1000,- also buying software for it and getting in your nice car to get the supplies... Again a discussion that will never end. Just go out and walk each in his or her own way and respect each other.

I still believe anything that is not naturally configured to our anatomy will feel "awkward". The best machine is the human body when it is trained properly for any given situation. Trailer is definitely innovative but in my humble opinion, not needed when we distribute weight evenly and only pack essentials.
@radicaldesign
@radicaldesign 6 жыл бұрын
I understand your position but I dare to disagree. We have wheelbarrows, horses, mountainbikes and I would even count parachutes to this conclusion that there are some things not 'naturally configured' that are quite handy to have in certain situations...
