Backrack was a must after busting my window. KYB MonoMAX shocks, LT rated tires(dont pop as easy) bed liner, tool storage, Dickies seat covers. A locking diff and skid plates for getting around on construction sites and the land fill is on my wish list but probably won't happen til I buy a "new" truck, hopefully an FX4 with that gear already.

I've purchased and installed the AMP Research BedStep2 based on this video. Absolutely great product that solved a real problem - bed access at the side of you truck bed. Assembly and installation was easy. The whole process certainly will take less than and hour. Installs on existing frame with no drilling or modifications. Very, very nice! (A bit pricey.)

My build would be upgrading the alternator to 440 amp alternator, install waterresistant plug in jump start receptacle in the front grille, standard 12v receptacle on both sides of the bed, and single 220/240v receptacle at the rear bumper.

Honestly as an owner of a construction company with the need of work trucks, this is pretty much the set up I use for some of them, instead of the ladder rack, I’ll throw a tool box and instead of the front bumper I’ll just put a brush guard, I do put cheap mudding tires and wheels so the employees can have fun on the dirt from time to time

Honestly this is a nice looking truck as it is built, for me the roof rack would work if going camping with a roof rack tent, but for normal use I’d rather go with a tonneau cover. Either way I love the way the truck looks for being a base model.

I want those rims for mine. The under bead air compressor wouldn't be a bad idea but I won't lose my spare tire for it. That ladder rack should have been black but I'd rather a shell with a cargo top than the ladder rack. What should have been included is the latch that lets you swing down the back seat. I put one of those on my 13 and it makes for a great storage area.

1 zinc does nor stop galvanic corrosion, it makes it worse 2 mounting the switch and gauge under the bumper will rust it away and corrode the contacts in the switch 3 that bumper is really cool if you dont have chrome, nothing bad to say about that :) 4 why did you opt for not putting a mat over the front hump? and no rear mats? This seems like a huge oversight. I really love the idea of the onnboard air, but I never see anyone address the 20 ton gorilla in the room. That is that mounting the pump and tank under the vehicle will lead to premature failure from rust and corrosion. I never see any interesting ideas on how to protect it.
@StuartBreland
@StuartBreland 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe use bed liner on the air tank. For the compressor I'm not sure if that would be such a good idea.
@americantrucks
@americantrucks 6 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but you are simply incorrect about your statement towards zinc worsening galvanic corrosion. While not perfect (aluminum to aluminum) Zinc and Al are extremely close on the galvanic table while the 'Anodic Index' falls under .25V which is acceptable in outdoor/wet/salty environments. And in regards to your statement about the on board air, as stated in the video you can mount the system anywhere you see fit, we just selected the spare tire area for the sake of the video. -Justin

electrohacker Zinc coated screws are better than stainless screws in joining aluminum. However, your only going to have a galvanic reaction if the materials are touching and there is moisture present. Using bolts with Teflon washers or sealing the connection from moisture might help... but welding the aluminum directly is the only way to eliminate the problem.

@patmat.
@patmat. 5 жыл бұрын
The hitch is what I like best. I wouldn't put pneumatic equipment in the dirtiest least accessible space, nor get rid on my spare tire. Also the weak fixed aluminium frame gets in the way when climbing on the bed. Has to be better options. For the fixation great point about Galvanic corrosion but use stainless steel bolts (of same strenght) with insulated washers, not zinc plated self-drilling screws !

I WOULD SAY A BED LINER WOULD BE A MUST HAVE FOR A UTILITY TRUCK OR ANY TRUCK FOR THAT MATTER TO PROTECT AGAINST DAMAGE. AND WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GET A FLAT NO SPARE TIRE UNLESS YOU PUT IT IN THE BED PERSONALLY I PUT MY AIR TANK IN BEHIND THE PASSENGER FENDER WELL AND HAD THE AIR COMPRESSOR IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT MORE LINE IS REQUIRED BUT RAN IT DOWN THE FRAME RAIL AND LOOKS NICE AND CLEAN BUT WILL REQUIRE A CUSTOM BRACKET MOST OF THE TIME TO MOUNT IT IN THERE

Ford doesn't pay attention to it. For YEARS they were using uncoated bolts to hang up aluminum exhaust shields, and then the shield ends up with huge holes where the bolts sat and would fall off or rattle around. Then you'd have to use huge fender washers to try to keep the thing held up.

Good video. However, moving the full side step back a foot would have likely provided enough boot room so the (very cool) Amp side step was unnecessary. I like the compressor, but how safe is compressed air in a collision? BOOM?! Also, no inside blueprint/gun rack? No outside locking tool box(es)? No cold air intake mod, etc. If you ever have done commercial or residential construction, you understand the value of these suggestions. Thank you for pulling together such a nice video with some very cool mods!!

So it’s okay that the air compressor can get wet?
@americantrucks
@americantrucks 6 жыл бұрын
Yes- as long as you don't use it while its fully submerged, absolutely. -Justin

AmericanTrucks Ford thanks for the reply. I’ve seen guys put the compressor behind the rear seat but i keep my strap, hitch, jumper cables, etc back there
@americantrucks

Yeah I originally mentioned about putting it under the rear seat (but they cut it out) although keep in mind, the compressor can get a little warm when worked hard. -Justin

Got mine in the bed, against the side wall with a plating to protect from impact. Combine with swing out saddle boxes for all your basic emergency needs.

Damn Dude this truck came out looking BADASS!! I need something like this for my job. I do framing/carpinteria. I use all kinds of ladders and power tools. Where did u get the lug nuts that hold down that mount for the ladders? I just want to take the advice you said about the problem with wrong screws on the aluminum truck.

Why would you need a 2 5/16" (58mm) ball for? 50mm (2") is the most common size of trailer towball's

That hitch was really cool but I clicked the link being scared that it was going to be like $150 and it ended up being $300.. dang that's a chunk of change for something like that.

It is but its hard to put a peace of mind value on knowing you're load is safe and balanced therefore (hopefully) not leading to any white knuckle situations on the road. -Justin

You completely had me until you put the air tank/compressor under the truck.. but aside from that nice video.

Your complaint is a popular one and that's why I tried to stress the fact that you could put these things in a number of places, including under the truck. In fact I have a Jeep buddy here at work who has this exact kit in his engine bay and has been through mud, sand, etc for the last few years and the kit is still going strong. -Justin

"Trying to build an all encompassing truck is just isn't the best idea, instead we're going to build the Swiss Army knife of F150s".... because those are two very different things and we are going to do one of them poorly, how hard can it be? (Jeremy Clarkson sarcasm voice)

You conveniently left out a word to help shape your argument "all encompassing WORK truck". Work and Utility are, in fact, two different things. -Justin
