The Bates Motel is a prime piece of real estate? I seem to remember a line in the first movie saying the new highway was built far away from the motel, so they hadn't had any customers for a while and that contributed to Norman's insanity, but whatever.

I think it's obvious the makers of this didn't pay much attention to continuity. But you're right, the Motel was the opposite of prime real estate - it was on a rubbish piece of land that nobody wanted and that was a major factor in all the movies and the new BM series too. Just shows how terrible the writers of this were! they also said Mrs Bates body has never been found... wtf??

They didn’t care about the details. The town in the original, the sequels and book is named FairVALE, and they consistently spell it as FairVILLE in this movie. The sign of the motel isn’t the same sign from the original, it’s the sign from Psycho 2/3. It makes sense to not have the OG sign in the sequel timeline, it’s obvious Toomey (who took over as manager for Norman) just bought a new sign. In this continuity, the motel hasn’t been open since the events of the first movie, so the sign should be the same one.

You know, after the story about suicide ghosts I've come to conclusion that this series could be far better, if it wasn't connected with the Psycho; if it wasn't Bates Motel but an original motel with its own lore. Then you can work with supernatural and whatnot.

I remember seeing this when it originally aired in that mid-summer tv dead zone. I don't think I paid much attention to it, I spend most of the time drawing. For years it was another one of those shows that I was kind of certain that I was the only one who had seen it.

If you wanted to do another super long movie series like the Witchcraft movies but more family friendly you may like reviewing Hallmark Channel's Good Witch series. There are seven movies and a TV show. It's a cute show that has both good and bad parts that I think you like to riff and keep track of the lore. It's not super over the top with the magic like Witchcraft but still a fun supernatural show about white witches helping townfolks. Be worn though there is a huge fan following but with your humor I think even die-hard fans may get a chuckle in good fun. Love your videos and Happy Halloween!

Wow!! I had no idea this was a thing!! And I see your Psycho box set. funny, because I found out about the Psycho sequels thru one my dad had. The cover was almost exactly the same except it didn't inclue Bates Motel, only Psycho 2 through 4. I was obsessed and have fond memories from my middle school days back in 2010 or so. Your review of the 2nd one gave me a taste, I definitely need to get the DVD out and have myself a well deserved marathon!!! Thanks Allison! I first saw this film on youtube years ago, but eventually found that same DVD set. I had no idea it was even on DVD at the time. I always took as a film doomed to remain an online oddity like THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL, Roger Corman's FANTASTIC FOUR, or the seriously underrated ROBOTECH: THE MOVIE. THE BATES MOTEL (1987) is admittedly kind of a guilty pleasure, though I don't think I could ever recommend it. As for it being an anthology series, even if this had been picked up, chances are only Bud Cort would have returned as the host. And I think after a while it would have gotten tiring reusing the same locations for each story. Had there been more episodes, it probably would have been cancelled after one or two Seasons anyway. At least Anthony Perkins returned for PSYCHO IV: THE BEGINNING, which I think is a terrific entry to the franchise. And may be my second favorite, after the original.

It's a shame the premise was handled so poorly, because when you did the cliffnotes version of the little "teen angel" b-plot there it actually sounded like it could have been a decent episode in literally any other series, kind of in the same vein as "The Tale of the Prom Queen" from Are You Afraid Of The Dark.

There's an unintentional, slight DC Comics connection with Bates Motel. Bud Cort and Lori Petty, who starred as the film's central characters, would go on to play Toyman and Livewire in the Superman Animated Series in the 1990s. In other words, this is a tale about Toyman and Livewire taking over and managing the Bates Motel.
