that year was AMAZING, so much that I don't have a "Best Film" but an ex-aequo 3-way tie, between Stranger by the Lake, Snowpiercer and The LEGO Movie... with Great Budapest Hotel just narrowly missing making it a Poker of winners in a 4-way tie. If truly forced to split awards I would give Snowpiercer Best Picture, The LEGO Movie Best Animated Feature and Stranger by the Lake Best Foreign Film so they would all three be winners, but they all three deserve to win the title of "Best Film of 2014", in my opinion.

Toy Story 3 was massively overrated that year for the amount of acclaim it got. It wasn't better than How To Train Your Dragon or The Secret World of Arriety in regards to animation films. So it never should taken Best Animated Picture. It was a pretty good film at best with an amazing 3rd act and at the time conclusion to the also at the time trilogy. Obviously this was way before Pixar announced Toy Story 4. But both How to Train Your Dragon and The Secret World of Arriety had much stronger 1st and 2nd acts and were written better. Something the Academy time and time again fails to take into account when assesing animation films. Thus we keep seeing Pixar and Walt Disney Animation dominate this award over nearly the last 2 decades even when the likes of Dreamworks, Laika and Studio Ghubli have been making much better films for a lot of that period or you see stupid things like Happy Feet (again good film) win over much much better films such as Paprika.

Best film of 1998 is a little - and HILARIOUS - Spanish Film called El Milagro de P. Tinto, to my taste. The same director has just delivered another hilarious masterpiece that here has been released by Amazon Prime Video, "Historias Lamentables" (Unfortunate Stories) and so far it is also the best film I have seen in 2020... check out the trailer, is in youtube, so you can get a taste of how Javier Fesser's style is... a mix of Capra, Looney Tunes, Spielberg, Fellini... he is unique, and one of the best directors at work, worldwide. He got nominated once for the Oscars, for his UNESCO funded short film - which is brilliant, as well - "Binta y la gran idea" (Binta and the great idee) which maybe is here in youtube also?

Supporting Actress was all over the place. I remember predicting Tilda Swinton, under the reasoning that three of the films represented didn't get much love at all (Amy Ryan and Cate Blanchett were the only nominations for their films, and American Gangster only had one other nom for Art Direction), which left Swinton and Ronan. I figured, of the two of them, Swinton had already been in several respected films/roles, while Ronan was a newcomer (and only like 12 at the time), so she had the leg up. Plus she had just won the BAFTA. But I think most people weren't predicting Swinton - I'm guessing most were split between Dee (SAG winner and the sentimental/career favorite) and Blanchett (Globe winner, though she had just won the Oscar for The Aviator three years before).

- I think Saoirse Ronan got nominated over Redgrave because Saoirse was the basis for the performances of older Brionys. That and introducing a new prodigy. - If there was one Oscar Transformers deserved was Best VFX. The VFX team had the bad luck of being in a Michael Bay movie. - How do you know animation is a ghetto? Because Ratatouille wholly deserved the Original Screenplay win (and at least the Original Song nomination). It pisses me to no end, because this is one gente snub to make up for another genre snub: Quirky indie(ish) movies always win here as a consolation prize/throwing a bone to future blockbuster filmmakers, without ever considering that animation screenplays are usually at the forefront of movie originality and greatness.

In the case of Supporting Actress, I predicted Tilda Swinton at the time but I totally viewed it as a tossup and somewhat iffy prediction. My thought process was she was actually great in the film but it was also a way to honor her for a good career and a way to honor MICHAEL CLAYTON that night. I remember some people saying maybe Saoirse Ronan could pull it off due to massive vote splitting but I didn’t see it as likely. I thought Amy Ryan had a solid shot too and frankly she would’ve been my other choice as she was great in that film and just a truly fantastic and versatile actress.

Some thoughts about your retrospective (which is a great idea, please keep it up and do also some crazy shit like 1963 or 1981 :D ): Best Picture: This was a real nailbiter on nomination day, at least for me - because my favorite film was indeed Atonement, just slightly over No Country for Old Men (which deserved EVERY Best Director Award that year). At first, it looked very good in terms of oscar chances, after the Globes nominated it for a million awards. But then came the guilds - and boy, that was one disappontment after another: Atonement was shut out from DGA, PGA, WGA and SAG!!! It got ZERO nominations from the four most important guilds and oscar pre-cursors! The Actor Guild even snubbed Saoirse Ronan, for christ sakes! And then the movie won the Golden Globe for Best Drama (in their shortened show because of the Writer Guild strike) and was nominated for a billion BAFTAs, where it also won Best Picture - which was just crazy. I didn't check this, but this may be the biggest „gap“ between Guilds and Globe/BAFTAs in terms of nominations for one movie! As such, I was absolutely reliefed, when Kathy Bates called in the very last category the name „Atonement“ at oscar morning. I knew, that it couldn't win anymore - but at least it was nominated für Best Picture! Best Director: That Jason Reitman nomination was at first sight so far-fetched and shocking... but in hindsight, I really love it. Even if Reitman kicked Jason Wright out of the line-up, the directing of Juno is marvelous. It's that kind of invisible achievement but with an important impact like Robert Redfords Ordinary People or Robert Bentons Kramer vs. Kramer. Directing is not just about a vision and the visuals: It's about DIRECT-ing the actors the right way and finding the correct tone. And just think about it: A movie like Juno with such a delicate premise and light humor could have gone so wrong in so many ways. Especially the first scene, which „shows“ the sex between Page & Cera, who played underaged teenagers (!), was marvelous and perfect. By the way: A lot of people thought Sean Penn would be the fifth or even fourth (before Tony Gilroy) directing slot, because of his very important DGA nomination. There was a rumor, that maybe the breaking news about cheating his then-wife Robin Wright simply killed the buzz for him (and the movie itself, which got a LOT of Guild nominations). Best Actor: George Clooney would have won without Day-Lewis - that's what a lot of pundits and he himself predicted ;) Mortensen & Jones were the only nomination for their movies and Johnny Depps Sweeny Todd was very divisive. On the other hand, a lot of academy members loved Michael Clayton. Best Actress: Cate Blanchetts oscar nomination for The Golden Age was quite controversial. She was even shortlisted for a Razzie as Worst Actress, but „failed“ to get the nomination. And Laura Linneys nomination is one of these reasons, why I love the oscars: It's such a surprising but well-deserved recognition! Supporting Actress: The oscar pundits at that time were torn between Cate Blanchett und Ruby Dee. Amy Ryan was seen as the critical darling, which couldn't get any step into the „glamorous“ award shows after her nomination(s). Tilda Swinton on the other hand flew quite under the radar, even with her BAFTA win. The best argument for her: As I said the movie itself was quite beloved by the academy. And Supporting Actress was the only place, where they could have easily honor it as an „Academy Award Winner“ - which they did ;) SAG ensemble: The nominations alone were seen as an ending for every speculation, which movie would win Best Picture. Why? Because just ONE movie got a BP and a SAG Ensemble nomination that year: No Country for Old Men. Cinematography: A lot of people were sure, that Deakins would finally win... but not for No Country for Old Men and instead for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Why? Because there are quite a lot of cineasts, who believe this was the greatest Achievement in Cinematography for the whole, damn decade! But sadly, the movie wasn't recognized that much elsewhere by the academy, so presumably a lot of voters didn't see it. At least, There Will Be Blood was a very worthy winner. Editing: It should be noted, that The Bourne Ultimatum achieved that rare feat of winning Best Editing without getting a Best Picture and/or Best Director nomination. This happens about once in a decade (2010-19: Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, 2000-09: Bourne, 1990-99: Matrix, 1980-89: Who Framed Roger Rabbit). Score: Oh no, here I have to politely disagree: Atonements score was just as marvelous as There Will Be Blood - and in my opinion even better. Marianellis achievement was combining a typical, grand orchestral score with that „unique“ type writer sound. It was a very effective way of blending the music within the story. And the famous one-take-scene also rises because of that brillant canon of Marianellis score and the choir at the beach. Visual Effects: This was a big surprise for many, because The Golden Compass was a box office flop. So, a lot of pundits thought, it would be an easy win for Transformers. Foreign Film: O.k., this was a real shitshow. The omission of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days was a disgrace and is seen as one of the worst mistakes of the academy ever. The film WAS submitted by its origin country Romania, but wasn't even shortlisted (!) as one of the nine candidates for a nomination. This was within the second year, that the academy published that kind of a shortlist and the backlash after that was enormous. People were so outraged, that the academy had to change the rule again for the next year: After 2008, six films were selected like before by hundreds of academy members eligible for voting in the foreign language category, and three by a small margin of 20 jurors. And that trick worked quite good: Every Shortlist after that was more diversified and at least every „important“ candidate got in (at least the ones who were submitted). Now, the rule was abandoned just last year, but instead the shortlist was widened up to 15 films. And about the nominated films: I am an avid watcher of every oscar nominated movie, but in this case even I have only seen the winner The Counterfeiters... which... is... fine... I guess? I really can't remember it, so at least it wasn't bad. Nevertheless, the omission of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days was just topped by the omission of Hoop Dreams as Best Documentary in 1994.

Atonemente is a great film. I think it has the best 1st act in a movie in like decades.

The golden globes that year was bizarre. 7 nominees in picture drama (the great debaters not getting any other nominations). This year perfectly effects the crazyness of them (travolta in supporting for hairspray)

2006 was also a pretty interesting year with Scorsese finally winning an Oscar and The Departed vs Babel for BP

I would love to see 2018 retrospective. Roma vs. Green Book. So sad to see Roma Loose. Also you could talk about the Best Actress and Best supporting actress snub for Emily Blunt

After No Country and There Will be Blood, “Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead” was the best movie I’d seen that year. Shame it didn’t get picture or acting nom’s.

I want to see 2002 (the year Chicago won) ... that ceremony was just insane. Not the actual season but the Oscar night itself. The night went from "Oh Chicago is a lock to win BP" to "Oh my gosh is Chicago going to lose?"

Ok so 2007 Supporting Actress and 2021 Actress race - When all awards bodies went with different winners, Oscars went with the BAFTA winner both times! #recognize

I love this idea. I'd be curious in seeing potentially 2011 Awards (2010 films). I feel like that is one that has not aged well tremendously well in light of all the other selections out there (especially that director win. yikes), and while most of the wins seem pretty obvious right now, only the two Actor wins at the time SEEMED like a done deal. Outside of that, maybe the year before where they jumped to 10 Award Contenders, or perhaps 1999 or 2003, where neither have aged particularly well. All that is to say, maybe look at the years with the lens of: have these aged well? You chose one of the years that might be up for debate between preference of There Will Be Blood or No Country, Tilda or Cate, Marion or Julie, but really, preferences aside, this year has objectively aged superb. What about years or winners that really, really leave a "eww. Bohemian Rhapsody really won editing. gross."

13:54 Something that probably prevented Angelina Jolie from being nominated was the controversy of her playing a biracial character and even having makeup applied to make her look the part. I mean, a similar controversy didn't stop Robert Downing Jr's nomination for Tropic Thunder, but at least that movie was aware and made fun of itself.

Following the Globe wins of "Atonement" and "Sweeney Todd," the hot gossip was that PGA was going to drop two bombshells and shake up the race. Most folks assumed "Hairspray" was going to be included (I know, it seems ridiculous now, but at the time, it seemed possible), but it turned out to be the snub of both Globe winning films. It felt kind-of huge at the time.

A retrospective on the 92 Oscars would be cool (Silence Of The Lambs, Beauty & The Beast, Boyz N The Hood, JFK, etc.)
