Looking to buy a Porsche 911 997? Then this is the video to watch. In this buying and depreciation guide of the Porsche 911, I am showing you the full depreciation curve, the depreciation per year and per 1000 miles driven. Furthermore, I show you how these numbers differ between the Carrera and Carrera S. At the end of the video, we will also compare all these numbers to some other cars. Finally, I show you some cars in the current market which offer the best value for money.
You can contact me on fourwheeltrader@gmail.com if you would like a personalized analysis.
Porsche 911 991 depreciation analysis: • Why NOW is the best ti...
Porsche 911 991 S depreciation analysis: • Why you should go for ...
The video is structured in a top-down way. That means that we first have a look at the full market and some general price levels. After this, we will dive into the details.
Specifically, this means that the video for the Porsche 911 is split into a few parts. We will start by having a look at the full 911’s depreciation curve, including the 991. This gives a good indication of the 997’s position in the depreciation curve. In the second part, we will focus on the 997and figure out the depreciation per year. All these numbers will then be split between the Carrera 2, Carrera 4, Carrera 2S and Carrera 4S. In the third part, we will also have a look at the depreciation per 1000 miles driven. We continue by having a look at the relative depreciation rate and how this rate compares to some other cars. Surprisingly, the rate is quite high. At the of the video, I will show you how you can find the best deals in the market and what some of these deals are.

I bought a 2008 997.1 Carrera S cab with 118k miles on it for $20k last year. I'm wondering if I am that blue dot so low!! LOL!! I put in $1500 in preventative maintenance and I've never smiled more in my life with the top down cruising. What I love is that it has so many miles on it that I never will have to worry about how many miles I'm putting on it since I've basically passed the point of "no return" for mileage depreciation. I could drive it another 40k miles and it will still be worth high teens, low 20's. The best cars are the ones you can just enjoy and not have to worry about! Runs like an absolute champ as well.

Even if you do turn a 25K car into a 50K mile car, its a pretty shallow curve of depreciation anyway, and if you do it over 10 years, you will probably loose nothing, because the price of a new 911 by then will be 200K protecting the underlying price of the 997 anyways. Its a great car either way.

I never comment on videos, but your channel is truly exceptional and I had to give my two cents. Your analysis is spot on, similar to what I've done myself except on a far more thorough level. Invaluable insight for an "ordinary" car guy like myself who wants to find my next sports car but not wealthy enough to throw oodles of cash out on depreciation (the number one driver of vehicle cost that people usually overlook). Love the plots as well - concise and easy to read, yet packed full of information. One can keep re-reading the plots depending on the perspective you are looking for. Keep up the good work! Very thankful for your heavy lifting, especially the comparison to other models on the market. People often don’t realize that exotics like used Ferrari and Aston (and Porsche, though not as exotic, ha) are actually feasible purchases to the upper middle class with a some homework and research. It is incredibly rewarding to find something that seems unattainable yet fully within your budget - I am in my late 20s and bought my first Porsche 997.1 two years ago. I have a regular desk job (no trust fund, no hand-me-down luck), but with hard work and a keen eye to finances you too can find a sports car within your means! Studying depreciation curves like the ones here on Fourwheel Trader are only one important step in this process. Unfortunately I’ve also gotten the sports car bug now, which means I’m eternally plotting the next adventure when funds permit…no doubt with the help of the analysis here :)

This 997 analysis was perfect. I have been waiting the for the 997.2 mkt to bottom, but it is taking some time. There’s a big difference between the .1 and the .2-as the .2 has a similar direct injection engine found in the 991 (no IMS, or bore scoring issues) and is the perfect 997. This really shows in the price jump between the two variants.

I had MY2005 997, 12 years ago. Watch for corrosion on the two smaller radiators (air con and oil) in lower front bumper if looking to buy. Not cheap to replace. My favourite version and I’ve owned 964 and 993 as well as older Boxster and 981 Boxster owned from new MY2013 ... which we still have and is excellent. All Porsche cars lovely - good hunting

Love your videos mate, I purchased a 2005 (single row ims) 911.1 2wd auto base (gt3kit)for $49,995 new zealand dollars, owned it for 12 months from 70,000kms to 78,800kms and sold it for $56,000 nzd. beautiful car, beautiful Stats. ill get another. thanks, your info is very helpful, when most people are comparing them by deciding what the last true real 911 is, I was driving mine and getting paid. the Porsche club asked me to join and I spent a year cruising once a month with all sorts of Porsches and the tag along ferrari's, aston martins, masaratis, jags. what a great way to meet people and have fun. hopefully the know it all's will keep expecting/telling others these cars will grenade the ims/engine and I can pull something like this off again. a 911 base is great option. get a 997.1 for the price of a camry and let it rip, while you loose next to nothing and gain so much. its a great and affordable life driving depreciated European gems. many Thanks

I believe 997.2s are going to be extremely collectible and have a ton of history already since they didn’t produce too many of them because of the recession. I only found 15 for sale in the US with a clean Carfax. I believe they’re actually going to go up because they’re the last of analog 911s. 997.1s and 996s I see too many of them on the market where a 997.2 I hardly see any.

Solid video. As we know other variables besides mileage and year/gen. Hard to map everything. For example options like Sport Seats. Eight months after this video was made I bought a sub 40k mile 2005 CS 6MT for mid 40's from a reputable dealer. IMS and shaft was upgraded to 2006 spec by the shop. Heavily equipped except for no PSE or PASM. Many requests to buy...dealer was firm at $45k. Took the plunge and the car is immaculate, not a flaw, west coast car, and good records. Still feel a few K too high but in looking at ll the ones I did across the US from 2005-2007 this was the best.

I watched just one of your videos and subscribed. I enjoyed the way you presented your data and enjoy your enthusiasm. Congratulations! One collateral issue relating to mileage. As a very general matter, older cars with low mileage means they sit for a while and sitting causes damage. In regards to 911s with IMS bearing issues, many have noted that damage to the bearing is caused at lower RPM driving and is often seen in lower-mileage cars that are driven at lower rev ranges. I do not believe the IMS bearing issue as horrific as people describe, but I simply note that low mileage older 911 cars can still be problematic and perhaps the pricing is reflected for this factor.

The break in the market between 997.1 and 997.2 likely has to do with the much improved and more durable 9A1 engines introduced in 2009, which among other things eliminated the IMS bearing problems that were present in many 997.1 engines.

It comes down to supply and demand. The cleaner cars with low mileage with complete records will fetch more money and that’s the bottom line. You get what you pay for. Here’s a piece of advice from my own experience. Once you know your preference I.e. color, drivetrain, gear box , etc. buy it! Don’t wait. I saw a really nice with my preferred specs, negotiated a price but sat on it for a few days and it was sold. What I learned is when you find your specs which is not easy to come by and you agree on a deal (even when they hardly budged) just buy it. So when I had another opportunity, guess what I did? No waiting around and I got it! These 997s are special, the last analog visceral 911s.

In my experience buying a 997.2 the lowest price outlier cars are usually imports with no history and visible issues. In Germany you can often find Dubai imported vehicles for 30% less than the equivalent car with a full maintenance history and was a “resident” all along.

True, most the 911 market depreciates in a predictable way. Cars deviating from that often often have a catch. Nevertheless, if you look the market like a hawk you will sometimes find some gems.

Excellent statistical analysis! I know you are not facing the demise of combustion engines cars in the USA quite as soon as in the UK (2030) . How do you see the effect of this on the depreciation curves of specifically a 997. Would you say that the advent of moving to electric versions of cars will accelerate or decelerate these curves? Initially I thought that in the case of a 997 it might hold its value like the 930 from the 80’s has done, but electric cars like the Taycan/Tesla are that exciting that people will rather choose the new tech verses an old world combustion engine?? Let me know your thoughts

Dean Grice Not true, the bearing from 2006-2008 is unserviceable and cannot be replaced unless the engine is taken apart. Grease from the bearing may not be sufficient enough to lubricate it properly. Porsche struggled until 2009 to get this right.

@FourwheelTrader, I wonder if your analysis takes into consideration how few models of the 997.2 were produced relative to the 997.1 or the 991.1/2? There were ~60k units of the 997.2 made with the last aspirated 9A1 engine (non GT cars; same engine in the 991.1). There were 105K+ units of the 997.1, which also had the M97 engine, rather than the much improved 9A1 variant. Similarly, there were over 105k units of the the 991.1 and a similar numbers of units for the 991.2. In other words, you have very low production number relative to cars before and after the 997.2, which could mean the car should bottom out at a higher level than its predecessor and it should track similar to the 964 and even the 993 in terms of being collectible in the near term.
@fourwheeltrader
@fourwheeltrader 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, that's a good point. Production numbers are at this stage not taken into account in any of the models i use. However, I also don't think it is necessary to include them. The data namely includes the split between the 997.1 and 997.2. This split shows that the 997.2 models go for a large premium compared to the the 997.1 models. As a result of this price difference, the model forecast shows that the 997.2 would bottom out at higher levels than the 997.1 (this forecast is not included in the video). The reason that it shows this is the it can be argued that all information is reflected in the price of the cars. This includes information such as a better engine for the 997.2 and lower production numbers. It is however with the current data not possible to say what excactly the reason is that the 997.2 is priced higher. Is it the improved engine? Or is the production numbers?

It’s not bad analysis, but you’re missing some key steps. Have a look at 3D plots rather than 2dimensions. Also the number of vehicles you’re looking at in the market isn’t enough to be able to produce accurate curves. There are ways to overcome this...
@fourwheeltrader
@fourwheeltrader 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips. Most of my other videos include 3d plots for the fair purchasing prices. However, i get the impression from my viewers that they find it much harder to follow when i use a 3d plot. I therefore switched back to 2d plots. When it comes to the curves, the curves are relatively stable. There are indeed ways to increase the stability further but i found that for most markets the added benefit is marginal.

It would be great if you can add some diversity to the Chanel by evaluating some Japanese cars (including specials variables for the US market). Two suggestions: the 1st Gen Honda/Acura NSX and the Honda S2000. Japanese cars from the 90s/2000s are going through a big awakening in market, especially the s2000 CR in the US.

I like your videos but I find that the organization of your videos difficult to follows as they are different from video to video. Maybe more headings or captions or timestamps would guide the viewer. Also if there was a conclusion section to boil down all the analysis, that would be beneficial. It's hard to stay engaged when the videos are all different and jumps around.

This shows a 'split' at 4:11, but then the graphs with the similar data points for base and S, 2 and 4, coupe and cabriolet show plotted straight lines without any 'split' ? Because it's not there - so where did it come from? The price difference you quote as $16K, but I think you've overestimated it AND you didn't mention that the 997.1's are, of course, older than the 997.2's and more likely will be higher milage ...... still a good review but.........and If you've read this far you can go do your own research on 997.1 engine serial numbers and how early in the life cycle their engines were already being built with the non-issue IMS bearing the 997.1's are also more plentiful - that's ok - their port fuel injected engines sound better and they look more old school - the LED lights on the 997.2's look very odd to an old geezer like me ; P .

$ currency: is this the US market? Believe me you would not get a 997 at these rates in Europe:-) I would recommend to factor as well further categories within a generation: e.g. a 997.1 prior to 2006 is obviously less attractive (risks) than a post 2006, and some models are considered modern classics and their prices at least in some part of Europe are actually gaining in value. Finally Porsche options need to be taken into consideration simply because these cars last so long that the resale potential needs to be integrated at the Purchase moment. Cosmetics comments really (as a complement if you wish to stick to the presentation parameters without extending to all 997 types), otherwise a lot of work in this analysis, well done.
@fourwheeltrader
@fourwheeltrader 4 жыл бұрын
This is the US market. I'm from Europe and i'm aware that the market here is quite diffrent and especially more expensive. Generally, the premium which is paid for options fades away quite quickly once the car ages. This happens up to the point where prices bottom and might even start to increase. I didn't run this analysis yet for the 997, but my guess is that we slowly start to see this effect. Thanks for the tips.

@@skoshunt Perhaps we mean different things :) . The end of the video shows cars which i think offer good value for money. I.e this model x with price y and mileage z. When it comes to the full market, the inflection point usually offers the best value for money. Also, the S and high spec cars offer food value because the initial premium is reduced significantly.

Was buying prestige cars for a living back in the 90s and earned a fantastic living buy following these golden rules If the car has no price on it it’s to dear If the car is the right colour your sell it easily If the car has genuine service records it’s probably a good genuine car Milage is down to the buyer and helps your negotiation Number of owners is also a factor in Porsche cars Do your research on your target cars know there faults Your white board graph won’t help anybody smell burning oil missing engine or head gadget weep while looking at a car on there drive. Second hand cars age very volatile and Sometimes the price can climb back up in the short term If it works in the office for you good luck

Porsche enthusiasts (e.g. PCA members, Rennlist forum members, etc.) know the value of these cars as both buyers and sellers. This Depreciation & Buying guide is very useful for summarizing and comparing these values. Of course it is always possible to get a great deal on a 997 (or any car) when buying from a desperate or ignorant seller. And likewise, an uninformed buyer could pay way too much.

Rudy F 997.2 came out in 2009 after Porsche got a lot of heat for the IMS bearing problems. The 997.2 introduced the PDK with a brand new Direct Fuel Injection for performance. It also has less parts which make the car lighter and easier to maintain. Looking at them the taillights are different and the 997.2’s interior is far superior than the 997.1. 997.2 was a huge milestone as far as technology goes. That’s why I think 997.2s are more in demand than a 997.1 and getting much harder to find. They only them for 3 years.

Rudy F $38k is high for 2008. I personally think you’re better off buying a 997.2 from 2009. Yeah it might be $5k more but you won’t have any issues and it will be extremely valuable. If you’re buying a 911, saving pennies is not always the best. Go with the better car.
