OK, my theory as to the story behind this goes as such (WARNING! Wall of text ahead!): The ending where Mario builds the house takes place first. He builds a nice log cabin in the woods for him and Peach, possibly as some sort of little woodland retreat. However, by using wood from the forest itself, he unknowingly pisses off some sort of dark entity that oversaw the forest. At some point, while Mario is out for a walk in the woods, the evil entity attacks Peach, hinted at in the text about "he's just staring at me through the window above, and". In fact, I'd say the reason that line is cut off is because it was at that moment the entity took full control over Peach's body. Once it had full control, it made her start to cut out her own lungs (hence the lines "Please help me, I can't stop cutting", likely a futile plea for help from Peach, and "BRING ME YOUR LUNGS", likely a command from the entity). It likely continued with the forced self-mutilation until Peach had reduced herself to the corpse we see in the cabin. However, it wasn't finished. You see, this entity's existence spans countless realities, and once the Mario and Peach of one reality had defiled the forest, as far as it was concerned, the Mario and Peach of all realities had. Thus, it began to kill any Mario and/or Peach who dared set foot into its domain (the line mentioning something about "The secret is in the collection of worlds" seems to hint at this). Within its domain, the entity is capable of displaying illusions, phantoms of the Marios and Peaches who died to it before, and can even manifest itself as a hellish version of them (i.e. that Peach thing that chases you each time). This entity also feels that only it is allowed to kill Mario/Peach, and will kill any creature who tries to do so instead (hence why when Mario approaches the silhouette of that Dino, the text "DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH MY PREY!" appears). However, some Marios/Peaches managed to figure out to varying degrees that something evil dwelled within the forest, and in one reality, they decided to burn down the forest entirely (what we see in the fourth ending). However, this proved to be a huge mistake, for it only served to enrage the entity, causing it to manifest in its true form, and presumably bring untold destruction upon the Mushroom Kingdom (the text mentioning the beast's appearance and how it sounded like something "not from this time"). However, the entity was also was willing to give credit to how out of all the Marios and Peaches it had killed, these were the only ones who figured things out to the point of actually trying to get rid of it (hence the mention of "being impressed by their detective work"). Alas, the entity ultimately destroyed the Mushroom Kingdom (possibly the world), devouring its inhabitants, thus the mention of "feasting on the flowering organs". And, no matter how much they might resist, in whatever reality, it was all futile, for after all, "He is KING."

While everyone's got their own guesses at what's going on, and while it's just tangible enough to extract your own story from what happens, the fact that there's no direct answer, and that there isn't really any video trying to connect all the pieces makes this feel so alien and indecipherable that you can't help but be unnerved. I don't know, I prefer horror with a message that is at least decipherable. This just feels like the hack's authors just threw a bunch of random creepy tropes together with no actual message. It has the ~aesthetic~ of cryptic horror, and it's done very well! But, like biting into a piece of fried chicken that turns out to be all breading, there's no meat to the story.

@earthy I understand symbolism, but there's a lot going on under the hood with this hack that (regrettably) makes me think the author didn't really have a plan or an overarching message they wanted to go for, they just put a bunch of random stuff in there that sounded mysterious and creepy, while keeping it vague enough to allow people to draw connections between it all in an effort to make sense of it. This is my favorite creepypasta hack, and as much as I love it, I think the reason nobody's "cracked the code" to it is that there just isn't anything actually *there* at its core. It has like 5 or 6 narrative threads all happening at the same time, completely disjointed, all going in their own directions (peach is the god of the forest but also she's just peach, who had her heart gouged out by mario, who is a murderer? but actually she told him to do it? but actually she just fell down a broken bridge? then mario also died and is now roaming the forest as a spirit? but there's also some eldritch shenanigans going on? but actually it's about building a cabin? but actually ACTUALLY it's about a plane crash? and someone had a baby???) Like c'mon. If there's actually any story or even a central message/theme going on under all that "symbolism", the creator did too good a job at burying it. Also most of the text from the message box popups are selected at random from a bunch of cryptic phrases, and have nothing to do with each other. It's fluff. Still a 10/10 hack tho

Hey a theory of what the story is. Now. I think Mario and Peach decided to move into the middle of this forest (indicated by the cabin building scene). But Mario left for some reason. Maybe to save the mushroom Kingdom or something. And when he came back Peach was ether just gone or dead (indicated by corpse in the cabin) and also that many of the forests inhabitants were seemingly eaten (all the bloody corpses) and find out that 'Peach' turned into some kind of monstrosity that is murdering everything. And from the "again?" Thing that always appears in the beginning I believe Mario has tried Saving/getting peach back many many times. For how exactly it happened to Peach I think these that "He" did it to her. As the text messages which presumably come from 'peach' talk about someone stalking her and her trying to yell at him to go away but not being able to and saying that "He" is now just staring at her through the windows above. Which the cabin has. Another Indication that peach indeed is the monster is the text box that tells Peach "You made this"

I challenge part of this theory, the corpse found on the cabin is not Peach's, but the corpse of the Previous Mario that Built the house, hence when the next Mario enters the house, he sees the ghost of the Previous Mario inside. This is further emphasized by the last ending where it states that the Previous Marios were more useful.

I think what happened is that Peach and Mario decided to move into a forest and build a cabin, wanting a retreat to get away from the chaos of their lives. But when they cut down trees for materials, they angered some kind of god that then possessed Peach, forcefully drowned her, and then resuscitated her as an avatar of its wrath. In the chase segment, we can see her body has a ton of sticks poking out of it, implying that the influence of the forest god is creating some kind of plant-based growth inside of her that's pushing out and mutilating her corpse. As to who this "he" is, it could be the forest's previous avatar, likewise a victim. Paper Mario: TTYD does confirm that Peach is a prime candidate for possession by malevolent entities. Peach probably had a couple runins with it, leading to a final confrontation that led to the god taking her for its own purposes, releasing the previous avatar and leaving it to rot at the window above. When Mario, after searching for her and finding her("Are you looking for me?") saw her in that state, and heard what 'she' was saying, he realized something else was in control and asked what it was, to which it replied "I believe I am the god of this forest." It then killed Mario and pulverized his corpse, but thanks to extra lives he came back. Hence the body in the cabin. "I didn't mean to", "how did" and "sorry" in this context likely refer to Mario desperately trying to apologize. "YOU BELONG TO ME. CROOK." or "YOU BELONG TO ME, CROOK." could be taken two ways. One, the forest god is enforcing its control over Peach and calling her a 'crook' for what she stole from the forest, or the god's name is Crook and it's invoking it while suppressing her will. "DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH MY PREY" could also be Crook suppressing Peach. "THEY made it all from scratch" is likely Crook seething in rage over what they did. The description of a horned beast is likely a description of the first body of the god by someone who encountered it and escaped it, if briefly. Said person likely deciphered a lot of what the god does and how it shapes the forest, hence the hint they give. The "useless as the last one" could be the god taunting Mario's failure to save Peach, calling him as useless as every previous person who attempted to save its victims since by that point, Mario's likely going catatonic. The extra Marios are likely a figment of Mario's imagination as his mental state degrades from the horrors of the forest. "Oh god yes, they will love it". Perhaps Peach talking about their friends when they come and visit? As for the "I watch" thing, and the faceless Peach, those were probably created with intent to make Mario think there's still hope to save her, despite the lurking truth that he's finally been beaten. This is a battle he cannot win. The god knows that. Deep down, Mario knows that. But he refuses to accept it. He saved the very multiverse from utter devastation, didn't he? So he keeps going back in; for him, death is nothing, due to his extra lives. So he keeps going back to try and save Peach from the grips of the forest god, to which it can only ask... "again?" As for the glitch world and various references to Peach not being able to breathe and wanting her lungs removed or throat cut open, the glitch world is likely a representation of Mario's encroaching despair and madness as he goes through this god-forsaken forest, and it's likely the god confronted Mario and used Peach's voice to taunt him with these gruesome requests. The thing about flowering organs and such? Potentially a ritual used to either quell the god's wrath or earn its favor. The pink forest is confusing. It's likely not canon as the area is unfinished, but let's assume it is. By that point, Mario has well and truly snapped, going through the motions not out of the desire to save Peach, but because he has nothing else left with her gone. As he moves through, he hears Peach's desperate cries for the god to end her suffering. To kill her. Which it all too happily obliges, ripping her lungs out. The giant horned Peach at the end is likely the god fully integrating with her body, forcing it to develop traits of its original form. And finally, "he did not know" could be Peach trying to plead with the god on Mario's behalf. "He did not know" that the god would be angered, or that it was even there. But of course, that attempt failed.

These kinds of stories refuse to hold the player’s hand. They’re the “hard to get” types that you have to connect together yourself. These stories are usually pretty cryptic, though, for better or worse. A mixed response, as you have proven. This one in particular is part of the par. My favorite theory that I’ve read on here? Mario and Peach went for a vacation in a forest. They used the forest to make a cabin. In the forest, there lay something. Dormant. Angry. Vengeful. But it didn’t settle for one. And do remember, that this is a hero that can die many times. “The answer lies on the collection of worlds.” THEY preferred to capture Peach. Possess her. Make an example of, and with her. Horrifying the victims. Manipulating them. And THEY kept doing it. THEY deemed every Mario a threat. All of them unaware. All of them a unique experience. With unique dialogue. “Again?” One stood out out of them all, though. One figured it out before they died. This one burned the forest down. They were the closest. But THEY didn’t like that. And that’s what we’re exploring.

I think this is the Purgatory that all dead Marios go to when a player loses a life. It's a dark, twisted reflection of Dinosaur Island ruled by a malevolent Princess, who is all of Peach's negative emotions concentrated into one entity: where Peach is loving, kind and patient, Dark Peach is cruel, bloodthirsty and intolerant. That's why she murders and consumes all the Dragons, but also why she toys with the dead Marios before she destroys them; she likes for them to suffer but grows impatient with how many dead Marios are coming to her realm, hence the "again?" at the beginning and the reason for the odd dialogue in the fifth ending. The dead Marios don't realize they perished on Dinosaur Island, and so keep working to save Peach from Bowser, oblivious to the fate that befell them, and equally oblivious to what they're facing now. They try to build a cabin in the forest to appease Dark Peach, but since she sees herself as the God of the Forest, this angers her and she slaughters them in her rage.

This... this is a surprisingly good scary hack. I've got a theory of what's happening. So it starts after Peach and Mario wedding. They decide to go on vacation to a forest. Mario goes to the forest and build's a house and some bridges. After all is done, he invites Peach there. It's mostly nice until. A normal day. Peach is walking like normal when the bridge Mario built, collapses. And she drowns. Mario, filled with guilt... commits suicide. But, instead of dying, he is set in purgatory. Never to escape. And so trapped. Having nightmares about Peach, the pain and suffering. Having nightmares about People looking at him. He will never escape. He CANT escape. And so lives and does everything... again.

The "collection of worlds" meaning the Mario 64 paintings would make sense if it was in a romhack of SM64. I think it might mean something like each Mario we control after the 'again?' message being a different Mario from the previous time, therefore in a different "world" or "universe". Also, I much rather think this is all work of a powerful being way beyond anything Mario has ever faced. I can't take seriously theories that suggest Mario's regular enemies did something this horrible and unstoppable.

ok, some stuff i have been able to deduce There is a small timeline i can put together separate from what may actually be the beginning of the timeline. (to be frank, i think it actually begins when you take over Peach, and the evil spirit of the forest possesses her to fall into the pit of darkness, then the next Mario finds her a zombie behind the wall and the pool of blood. first off, the part where Mario is building the house comes first, Pink Forest, where Mario Falls under the Demonic Peach on to another Mario at the house is Second, Third is when Mario Revisits the house, and there is a corpse there (with the implication that Mario was the one who killed the Mario that built the house), and the Ghost of Mario inside the house belongs to the Mario that was Killed outside the house. I believe that because the Ghost of Mario resides in here, it means that Mario either built a house of the dead, or it means that he built his own grave, taking the fall for a peach that was inherently evil, but he didn't know it (as the removing of the layer 2 in the over-world reveals). There's obviously multiple iterations of evil Peach in this, I believe that each one is the speaking voice for the text boxes, and each have their own twisted personalities. but there is much more that i can't really piece together, i'm just going off of speculation, there may be a lot more hidden meanings, but also we may be reading too much into things that might not have any actual meaning at all, guess only the creator of the hack knows *shrugs*

Coronet refers to a type of crown and iirc comes from the same root as coronation (corona, the Latin word for "crown"). I think "Coronation day" simply refers to the day when Mario became a murderer in Peach's eyes, that being the day when she died (whether it was an accident or not, she doesn't seem to care which). It makes sense with all the lines referencing "him" loving the color red and "feast upon the flowering organs, for he is king" with the king being highlighted in red in the last ending. Dunno about you but I can only think of one character that's associated with and wears red here. This eventually leads to Peach reincarnating, and after killing Mario she decides to go and take revenge by destroying the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom (as seen in the burning forest ending with the description of a creature that towered in the light). She quickly finds pleasure in it and finally realizes why Mario did what he did, or at least so she thinks. ("this is what it must feel like to be king" "i am king for he is not" "and i did not need his help.") The feasting line being the only one in that ending that's colored red is Peach pretty much saying that Mario should be blamed for all the atrocities that happened after she was finished with him, because he's the one who started it all, hence the line "for he is king". Mario started it all, Peach just took his throne when he was gone and dealt with.

If removing the layers revealed more text, what would happen if you played around with the layers during the garbled text during the "I believe I am the god of this forest" bit? It looks like there is text underneath the glitchiness. I'm also curious what the separate layers look like during the glitchy underwater zone, but it looks like most of the text is recycled from the "I believe I am the god" text. EDIT: I downloaded the game and played with the layers in every place I could think of - well, I got all the endings except the King's Dinner. The garbled text is all one layer. Also: I wonder what the significance of the date listed in the game is. I didn't see any specific historical events on that date from my research, and I tried playing around with the numbers and coordinating them with letters of the alphabet. No dice. They also went through the trouble of using both a large and small Mario sprite. This might sound silly, but are the small Marios perhaps the decendents or children of the original Mario who built the house and Peach? Edit: I've been thinking a lot about the line of "Honey, HE pulled the plug." At first, I assumed something like someone was on life support, but it can also just mean putting an end to something in general. Still, that phrase stuck out to me. Connect that to the bit where you let the ghost Peach get you and you wind up in that dark area where it says "Oh, God, who is this guy?" and proceeds to talk about trying to tell them to go away but being unable to speak. They say something about him watching through a window from above. We then see the Mario ghost sprite, and it's looking right at us, the viewer. It's a custom sprite; Mario's sprites never look directly at the screen like that. What if this is a sentient Mario in a game of Super Mario World aware that it is controlled by us, the players? What if HE is actually the player? "HE pulled the plug" - he turned off the game. Thoughts?

I think the story is: Peach wants to be the star of her own game, as the main character instead of Mario, but he doesn’t want her to be. She goes deep into a nearby forest to prove herself, defeating every enemy along the way, but when she starts to walk back home after defeating all of them, a bridge beneath her breaks - and she falls into the river. She desperately tries to keep herself afloat and call out for help, and someone does appear; the god of the forest. They say they will save her after she begs them to, and they possess her, taking over her body, changing her form, and flying out of the water. Peach has been gone for a while, so Mario sets out into the forest to look for her. There, he’s thrown into the loop of endless realities. At some point he builds a small house for himself to stay in as his absence grows longer and longer during his search for Peach. In one reality, he stumbles upon his corpse inside the very house, and upon exiting, he’s dropped into the same river Peach almost drowned in. There, he finds the copy’s ghost, haunting the river and possibly still searching for Peach with the suspicion that she drowned. (Add more later)

I've been piecing together the story bit by bit.... I may have the story... Mario and Peach head into the forest to seek out a new home... and Mario starts building the home bit by bit which angers a spirit of the forest... Once completed, Peach encounters the spirit at 15:39... staring at her from the window... Before he possesses her, mutating her... Mario was out and about, hunted by said possessed Peach. He... meets his end by falling off the bridge and slamming right into the house he painstakingly made for Peach, becoming nothing but a red splatter on the wooden flooring. Shown at 15:18. So now Mario's spirit is wandering aimlessly in the Forest... forever hunted by the Spirit/Demon. As such... Peach becomes Demon-Queen of the Forest... and Mario, the hunted KING. 20:18 seems to be a 'first hand account' of such a demon from a survivor who escaped from the forest. And the entire time... Mario did not know about the spirit, hence the message "HE DID NOT KNOW" at 22:45 3:36... it was probably the encounter with Peach vs the Demon... Peach forced to move against her will, slicing open her chest as the demon wanted her to suffer and perish for the destruction caused for her own 'greed.' Her body discovered by Mario, supposedly revealing what she is. The "YOU BUILT IT" aspect probably means that she created her own tomb out of the wooden house.... and after that, committed 'suicide' before the demon before her body was 'repurposed' by it. 5:41.... The demon-queen hunts all creatures together, believing that she is doing the Spirit a good deed by gathering everything that is *HIS* favorite color... RED. Blood... He drained all of the creatures... and victims.. into that pool... that's what I have so far...

many might say this is how to make a scary mario game, but I think it's what to do to make any horror game, no jumpscares. the setting and it's plot can do the same as a few jumpscares.

Here's my theory: Mario was tired of saving Peach, then he tricked Peach into following him to the forest, where he drowned her ("My lungs hurt, please take them out" message), however,after death, Peach became a vengeful spirit (the flying glitched Peach,who murdered the rexes), Mario was not only wanting to stop saving Peach, but he wanted to steal the crown and have the whole Mushroom Kingdom for himself (hence the name "Coronation Day"), because he was jealous of Peach, however, when Mario was returning to the Mushroom Kingdom so he could rule it, Peach's vengeful spirit stopped him from proceeding, and she started to mess with Mario's mind, causing him to have halucinations, the halucinations eventually tricked him into building a house, which was actually his own tomb, once the house was finished, Mario realized that he had died, because he saw his mangled dead body lying on the house's floor, and that he was now in a hell created by Peach's spirit, where he would be killed, revived and killed again, forever as a punishment for his actions, hence the "again?"

Coronation Day: the anniversary of the coronation of a monarch, the day a king or queen is formally crowned and invested with the regalia... Peach was going to be crowned the queen but vanished in the forest, they sent Mario to find her... only for him to go down the same fate as peach, looping the same day over and over. (I might be missing some parts, but yeah that’s just my theory)

Which leads me to believe that this is purgatory for all the Mario’s that died trying to go back to the Forrest to save Peach. He keeps going back to try and save her but he keeps dying and coming here.

To make a long story short, This is basically purgatory in game form.

Theory: Mario and Peach go to these woods. Mario builds a cabin and bridges using the wood of the forest. A w*ndigo-esque entity (the "god" of the forest) gets mad that they invaded it's space and took it's trees. Peach then crosses a bridge Mario built, but it collapses and she dies. The forest god takes her body (or transforms into her) and starts to taunt and torture Mario, playing heavily into his guilt and worry. Since Mario respawns over and over after death, the creature toys with him and feasts upon his organs until it starts to get bored. It leaves the forest, still looking like Peach, and decides to crown itself King and feast upon the flesh of the many, many inhabitants that Peach used to rule over. Mario is still stuck in the charred remains of the forest. Bonus: Peach is still somehow present, the repetition of "HE DIDN'T KNOW" makes me think she's almost begging for Mario to not feel guilty about the bridge.

Something here, is being suggested. All I can make out from this is that Mario and Peach are likely stand ins for multiple people who wander this forest or maybe a married couple who was broken apart by whatever haunted this forest. Maybe Mario is uncovering something from his childhood, or hell, something that he had nothing to do with! Maybe he and Peach wandered into an area of the Forest of Illusion that was forbidden. I’m trying my best to make sense of this game and figure out what it means.
