Go back to the early 2000's so you'll know how the A350 came to be a competitor to the then brand new B787 on the scene at the time. "Cody" doesn't seem to mention that detail in his presentation. The A350 grew in size in time to drift into 777 territory to what people think about competing types from Boeing and AIRBUS. ORIGINALLY: 787 vs A350-800. Then the scene changed with the A350-900 and the A350-1000 even though the A350-900 was going against the B787-9 for a time until "XWB" titles started appearing with stretches of the A350 series. This column is meant for "Warp's" statement above. I meant to add: the A330 series started competing with B777s when Boeing got cleared to operate under ETOPS and in turn AIRBUS's A340s went bye and better versions of the A330 came into play against the 777 series of aircraft. A330s vs B777s. A350s vs B787s.

Very informative. But what it misses is the fact that range now takes priority over the number of seats. I’m a aviation strategy consultant myself and I’ve built plenty business plans / fleet plans for airline customers. And sorry to inform you, but for most of the airlines, the 787 and the A350 are the two options they have to select from for their long term strategy and planning. Large capacity aircraft are going out of fashion (need) for airline consumers, as evident by the fall of A380 and the 777s. As the concept of “thick routes” (point to point) is taking over, the “hub and spoke” model is going out of trend. Airlines want more and more point to point connectivity rather than huge number of seats to a hub airport and then smaller aircraft ops from there. Hence, it eventually boils down to, 1)Ownership cost, 2)yearly maintenance expense and 3)ability to make upto 75%+ PLF on most potentially available routes. So one can choose to ignore these aspects, but it is the reality and airlines are not picking between a 777/777x and A350, but rather between a 787 and A350.

Very happy to see this explained! I think you’re right, people saw both aircraft types were made from composite materials so made the assumption they’re the same class - but they forget that the 787 replaced the 767 to compete with the very popular A330, and the A350 replaced the 340 to better compete with the 777. Will be interesting to see how the 777x competes with the A350 once the global crisis has tapered off and we can see true results.

I agree, and looking at the A350's seating capacity and the triple bogie landing gears, which is on the 777, it's obvious that the A350 is a modern competitor of the current variant of the 777 and the future variant, which has been delayed. Meanwhile Boeing modifying it's 1968 737 (that heavily resembles the 1958 707 in many features) for the fourth time in mid-2010s (almost 60 year old "bones") - and everybody seems to like the Max (which I personally hate and won't fly if only not in a desperate need). Makes a lot of sense. The era of 4 engines jet is ending anyway. There are almost no routes that will demand a 500 passenger jet that can be profitably operated. They have to retire their 747s, and if they are also retiring their old 777s. They really need to fill the gap for the large jetliners, and it will be better to just replace them all with the same new jet that can fulfill all the roles they need and really bank on the economies of scale.

Great video! Flew longhaul on a 3 month old B789 and a 2 month old A359 on the same day, almost 3 years ago now. I preferred the latter because it was quieter and more spacious. (And yes, at the time I thought they were direct competitors.)

Coby you hit the nail on the head with this one. I think people confuse the "rivalry" because the A350 was initially a response to the Dreamliner, but it morphed into so much more. Fun fact the A350 also used the infamous lithium ion batteries that the 787 kept burning up. Once that happened Airbus quietly replaced theirs with the standard (heavier) lead batteries but airlines can still opt for the Lithium ion batteries today (and some have). Cant' beat that weight saving and power output LOL. I have not had the honor of flying on either so I can't comment. But I can say Subscribed.

Very detailed and logical explanation! I personally haven't experienced the A350. My only 787 experience was with Singapore Airlines which operated the dash 10 type. The plane was modern, comfortable and made the flight more than just a trip. The flight was an enjoyment. After the pandemic I'd like to try the 787s operated by ANA

I have flown the A350 from Hong Kong to LAX, the 787-9 from SFO to SIN and the 787-10 from SGN to SIN. The configurations, seating, service made a difference in my experience. They were all more enjoyable to the older aircraft.

I personally don't care for neither plane. The 777 and its variants is still a better plane than the 787 in so many ways. And the A350 wasn't a good replacement for the A340-500 & 600 even though it is more economical than the four-engine plane. I see the 787 as a replacement for the 767 which nobody seems to talk about.

I’ve only flown the A350 once, but every time I’ve flown in the 787 I’ve been more comfortable than I was in the A350. This was mainly because they were less crowded, which makes sense after watching the video. In terms of looks they’re both really beautiful planes. Also, the diagram at 5:15 blows my mind; not at all how I expected comparisons of these planes to turn out.

Take the A321 out of the equation. It is a mid range aircraft. The 737 is a dead duck. Boeing overeached rather than build a new aircraft. Should have listened to the engineers not the bean counters before the 800, never mind the max. The 737 is an early 60's design, way beyond its lifespan .

First time i got a proper and logic explanation and it makes sense - if numbers presented are correct. Personally i flew all planes mentioned and by far the a350 is my favorite. Yes - all the newer planes have nifty gadgets but what astonished me the most as a frequent flyer is the level of silence in an a350 - one can hardly tell engines are running when in air. No comparison so far in my opinion. Thanks for the great explanation!

Considering we were quite tired and in Economy.. We really felt comfortable.. Ambient lighting, seat configuration. Air conditioning systems made the 8 hour journey Smooth.. It also helps that both 787 and A350 can cruise at 41'000ft don't recall there being any significant Turbulence at all.

If given the option, I'd 100% take retraining for the 787. It's such a beautiful bird, not to mention the bleedless packs and better pilot comfort, it's all around just a much prettier cockpit, quieter too.

I love the 787 and would be flying it for our airline, if it wasn’t for the longer trips. I prefer shorthaul routes, unfortunately our 787 do not fly these 🤨 To me the A350 cockpit is ugly, and the window design looks like you’re in the Spaceshuttle.

A350s are wider and offers the same 3x3x3 seat config. Been flown in both I can say the XWB is roomier, seats are wider and engines is quieter. Can't say the same about japanese carriers as they use a different config for 787s (2x4x2) and nobody can deny this is the proper seat arrangement for the Boeing aircraft. I think both are beautiful and fulfill their purpouse over the average.

The seating configuration is what makes or breaks either of them. 3-3-3 on 787 can be really cramped in some window seats where the wall curves into where your shoulder would be. Meanwhile many a350s also adopt the same 3-3-3 pattern despite the extra width. So from a perspective of personal space the a350 is the clear winner in most cases today. There are of course exceptions like JAL with their roomy 8 abreast 787 and French Bee with the cramped 10 abreast a350.

Their cabin was great though while boarding, the cabin temperature was uncomfortably warm at best (do note that as a Filipino, I'm used to warm weather). I don't know if it's a 787 thing or a Vietnam Airlines thing, but that was the most significant part that I remembered. As an avgeek though I didn't mind as during that time, the 787-9 had only been in VN's fleet for less than 3 months and I was surely stoked to be able to fly on one.
