I recently posted a video on why the 747-8 is a success despite slow sales. In that video, I briefly mentioned that the 787’s competitor is the a330neo. And then I started getting a whole lot of comments like these - people were insisting the 787’s real competitor was the a350.
It seems like this belief is widely held throughout the KZbin aviation community - a simple search of 787 vs a350 yields a whole lot of videos directly comparing the two. But I am here to set the record straight: The 787 and a350 are not direct competitors. Let me explain...

I've flown the A350 across the pacific and returned on the 777 and I found a striking commonality between them. This video makes sense of it all. The 350 is a massive plane. It looks small from the outside due to its styling but it is massive! Cheers!

Go back to the early 2000's so you'll know how the A350 came to be a competitor to the then brand new B787 on the scene at the time. "Cody" doesn't seem to mention that detail in his presentation. The A350 grew in size in time to drift into 777 territory to what people think about competing types from Boeing and AIRBUS. ORIGINALLY: 787 vs A350-800. Then the scene changed with the A350-900 and the A350-1000 even though the A350-900 was going against the B787-9 for a time until "XWB" titles started appearing with stretches of the A350 series. This column is meant for "Warp's" statement above. I meant to add: the A330 series started competing with B777s when Boeing got cleared to operate under ETOPS and in turn AIRBUS's A340s went bye and better versions of the A330 came into play against the 777 series of aircraft. A330s vs B777s. A350s vs B787s.

Very informative. But what it misses is the fact that range now takes priority over the number of seats. I’m a aviation strategy consultant myself and I’ve built plenty business plans / fleet plans for airline customers. And sorry to inform you, but for most of the airlines, the 787 and the A350 are the two options they have to select from for their long term strategy and planning. Large capacity aircraft are going out of fashion (need) for airline consumers, as evident by the fall of A380 and the 777s. As the concept of “thick routes” (point to point) is taking over, the “hub and spoke” model is going out of trend. Airlines want more and more point to point connectivity rather than huge number of seats to a hub airport and then smaller aircraft ops from there. Hence, it eventually boils down to, 1)Ownership cost, 2)yearly maintenance expense and 3)ability to make upto 75%+ PLF on most potentially available routes. So one can choose to ignore these aspects, but it is the reality and airlines are not picking between a 777/777x and A350, but rather between a 787 and A350.

I agree, and looking at the A350's seating capacity and the triple bogie landing gears, which is on the 777, it's obvious that the A350 is a modern competitor of the current variant of the 777 and the future variant, which has been delayed. Boeing truly has to learn a thing or two from the Airbus A330 was first flown in 1994 and was a deeply modified A300 from the 1974 - still when they tried to modify it once more and called it a new plane, everybody thought it was a bad idea. And it was just in 2004. 30 years of basic construction being there and everyone went full boooo. Meanwhile Boeing modifying it's 1968 737 (that heavily resembles the 1958 707 in many features) for the fourth time in mid-2010s (almost 60 year old "bones") - and everybody seems to like the Max (which I personally hate and won't fly if only not in a desperate need). And then people be like "why does the max have so much problems?". It's like... bruh. You can't just stretch a 28.6 meters long plane up to 43.8 meters and pretend nothing gonna go wrong

Another proof regarding what you said is what Boeing themselves are mentioning! They only mention the A350 as the direct competitor to their 777x, but not to their Dreamliner! Regarding the preferences, I haven't flown any of them, but if I have the luxury to choose which one to fly, I am going to go with the A350, because I simply trust Airbus products over Boeing.

Flown on both, like both :) Comfy, modern, relaxing long haul cabin in both. You definitely feel a marked difference compared to the old guard on the same routes. From the cabin it’s pretty clear that the A350 is bigger, I agree with the remarks that it’s more reminiscent of the largeness of a triple 7 cabin and not a Dreamliner. The Dreamliner has always felt very spacious and modern but 767-like in overall size from cabin perspective.

Considering we were quite tired and in Economy.. We really felt comfortable.. Ambient lighting, seat configuration. Air conditioning systems made the 8 hour journey Smooth.. It also helps that both 787 and A350 can cruise at 41'000ft don't recall there being any significant Turbulence at all.

Can't say the same about japanese carriers as they use a different config for 787s (2x4x2) and nobody can deny this is the proper seat arrangement for the Boeing aircraft. I think both are beautiful and fulfill their purpouse over the average.

First time i got a proper and logic explanation and it makes sense - if numbers presented are correct. Personally i flew all planes mentioned and by far the a350 is my favorite. Yes - all the newer planes have nifty gadgets but what astonished me the most as a frequent flyer is the level of silence in an a350 - one can hardly tell engines are running when in air. No comparison so far in my opinion. Thanks for the great explanation!

Hello Coby: I have had the opportunity to fly both planes and I really loved them both. However, the A350 is very impressive with its interior design and it seems it feels more modern and spacious. I flew it from Frankfort to Shanghai right after the outbreak of the pandemic back in 2020 and it was a very nice flight.
@studiosnch
@studiosnch 4 жыл бұрын
Another thing that Coby missed but is also necessary in this thinking is the philosophy behind the design of these planes. Boeing designed the 787 to test the "point to point" concept of connecting routes which was a result of increased fuel prices and decreased passenger numbers after 9/11. Until this time, the duopoly giants believed in the "hub snd spoke" concept of transport: feed psssengers and cargo into a large airport, and then connect these with large planes like the 747, A380, 777, and A330/40. Also most of the 787 technologies were taken from that scrapped Boeing Supersonic project, especially the use of composites. The current A350's philosophy meanwhile, has already been discussed. It was a plane lobbied by carriers to be the next generation of long-haul that gave the benefits of being used in both P2P and H&S setups. As with the question, I can't give a definitive answer as I've only ridden on A380 and 777-300ER. I almost rode an A350, but the connecting flight to that plane was cancelled. In its place, I rode an A321 and then an A380. But I love looking at both 787 and A350! Hopefully when flying can be safely done again I'd like to do it with either these planes.

Technologically the B787 / A350 are competitor, however they are not aimed at the same market segment. The 787 is made to replace the aging 767 and compete with the A330, while the A350 is made to compete with the 777. Unfortunately for the A350 it is because it offers only one engine, I think that this really prevents it from spreading...

Coby you hit the nail on the head with this one. I think people confuse the "rivalry" because the A350 was initially a response to the Dreamliner, but it morphed into so much more. Fun fact the A350 also used the infamous lithium ion batteries that the 787 kept burning up. Once that happened Airbus quietly replaced theirs with the standard (heavier) lead batteries but airlines can still opt for the Lithium ion batteries today (and some have). Cant' beat that weight saving and power output LOL. I have not had the honor of flying on either so I can't comment. But I can say Subscribed.

This video and its analysis is absolutely spot on. A lot of people don't realize the genesis behind the 787. It was borne from the failed Sonic Cruiser concept in which Boeing was promoting faster flight times. After 911 and fuel prices increasing, airlines didn't want a fuel burning guzzler. So Boeing came up with the 787 initially looking more shark like and eventually becoming what it is today. Of course Airbus needed to do something but like Coby explained, Airbus with the A350XWB targeted the 777 which product line was maturing and starting to age. Hence, the A350-900 is direct competitor to 777-200ER and A350-1000 direct competitor to 777-300ER.

It was the delayed delivery of the 787. Had Delta gotten the 787 by 2010 they likely would have taken delivery. But the delay allowed them to defer their purchase decision. Makes a lot of sense. The era of 4 engines jet is ending anyway. There are almost no routes that will demand a 500 passenger jet that can be profitably operated. They have to retire their 747s, and if they are also retiring their old 777s. They really need to fill the gap for the large jetliners, and it will be better to just replace them all with the same new jet that can fulfill all the roles they need and really bank on the economies of scale.
