Sunnyside Asylum ran for 230 years before it's closure in 2011, making it Scotland's oldest asylum facility. In this video, we explore the colossal site showcasing all of the key parts. We are amazed at what we find as there is many details that have survived for over two centuries!

Knights hospitaller, c9nvents, orphanages. The catacombs, the tunnels, the towns, underground. Heavy traffic. Torture. You can run, you can hide. Karma is knocking, because they never die.

I was a patient in Sunnyside in 2011, I was there the day we all got transferred to the new hospital. I was a terrible patient & managed to sneak out the ward and explore the abandoned older part of the hospital, I was mesmerised by it. Sunnyside is now being turned into a country estate and there doing a really good job of treating and maintaining the building. The large hall with a stage has been donated by company to the sunnyside residents to make a community hub and is being restored to its former glory 🙂

For over 20 years my wife and l produced and presented the most unique award winning hospital radio in Scotland. Radio Sunnyside. Our studio was located in the adjacent to the rec Hall as seen here.Yes we were the producers and presenters, and did the final show when the hospital closed down. Ann & Allan Collins Radio Sunnyside

Grew up In Hillside and was brought up exploring Sunnyside. Main building awesome place, Rec Hall snooker and indoor bowls. The Building you call occupational Health is in fact ANGUS House. Occupational health unit was in front of this Building. Chapel of rest and morg. The building you referred to as the Infirmary was called new Hospital building, sadly nearly All gone and New buildings on the site. You never found Ward 8 or Carnegie House with the Zodiac Ceiling. Thanks for the video.

Oddly, alongside the human tragedy of the place, a bear cub once lived at the facility. Brought to Montrose as a cub, the brown bear lived to adulthood before being shot and stuffed and exhibited for a while in the local museum. The poor stuffed bear is now missing, having been borrowed for a party some years ago. The Montrose Museum are still hoping for its return.

great video and well done on the history of the place,, autism, mental health, and all kind of disabilities were taken as a sign of madness,, people were sent here because no one understood back then .... p.s i've attached a wee poem that tries to understand.... The asylum is closed, we were getting freed the kitchens are closed, there's no one left to feed they decided the patients are suddenly fine and now the asylum is replaced by poison vine You used to come and see me every other week the answer to my problems you tried to seek now no one visits me, your all ashamed but your secrets are safe and your presents are framed I wished you would come and take me home Instead I just waited here, I'm all alone no one to talk to so what do I do? will I just sit here, waiting on you? I'm getting released soon, where do I go? i've been here so long now, I do not know tell me why am I here, I committed no crime but I'm ready to leave now, it's the end of the line the scream of the patient is filled with dread I'm was that patient and now I am dead my body is gone, now my ghost is free to roam sadly the asylum sits empty but it was my home do ghosts light candles or sit in a chair do ghosts cry when there's nobody there I waited so long for you to come, I actually died at my funeral can you honestly say you cried but just remember that I could not be saved I'll forgive what you done when you visit my grave i'll stand right beside you while you remember me and you live in the world that I did not get to see

Does anyone actually believe that a civilization would build such a beautiful and magnificent structure for CRAZY PEOPLE? Amazing how all of these mental asylums popped up all at the same time in the mid-late 1800s. We're to believe that these amazing structures were built with technology like horses and buggies. I don't believe all of these asylums all over the world were built in the 1800s. And, I don't believe those who live in this latest incarnation of civilization built them. If you look at how many asylums like this one are all over the world we're talking in the thousands. If you look at the population during those times, there wouldn't be a need for thousands of asylums. It doesn't add up when you actually look at the population data.

It gets the adrenaline going, it's different, be careful. Just go and do it, you will love it...it's addictive What I hate seeing is, damage by kids and vandals, we have history around us and kids smash stuff up.. I, like you, and most urban explorers revel in abandoned, untouched buildings...time stops in those places the moment the last lock is locked.
