To clarify, when I mentioned satire/parody clause I was alluding to a catchphrase of Doug Walker. I was not saying that parodies are not fair use. My stance, as I directly state moments later, is that making something slightly more funny does not make it a parody. Abridged shows were retelling that are closer to the style of Teen Titans Go than anything else. That was my point.

WhoCanusMaximus there definitely are reverse weeaboos in Japan, but I'd be surprised if they have their own abridged series. Part of the reason they took off here is that these shows are very easy to dub over given their limited mouth animations, which hasn't been a thing in western cartoons since the Hanna-Barbera era. Then again, there are Japanese dubs of Hollywood movies (I watched a pretty good one of Men in Black while I was in Japan) so who knows

I really don't think "Fallen Titans" is appropriate for the Abridged phenomenon. A lot of groups are more active than ever, being invited to more panels across the world than ever before and visibility for abridgers being at a crazy high. Any walk through a popular convention confirms this. Additionally, they form the foundation for several well regulated companies, some of which have creative teams which live entirely off of the work on their channel(and I'm not just referring to SWE or TFS here. Even I'm in this position, for example). It's always been a niche and there are far fewer "hobbiest" abridgers these days(and arguably, the community is more intimidating to newcomers due to the structure that established teams have accidentally imposed as the norm), but it really hasn't diminished that much. I'd argue the community is far more active and engaged with fans than it's ever been, and I say this as someone who's been around since the beginning, quit for four years, then returned to abridging to see it in a better way than it had been before and decided to sat. There might be a mote of your personal engagement with abridged series as a whole obscuring the actual state of the community and its fans. 'course, devil's advocate against myself: I'm obviously bias in the opposite direction. I think that the fact that my life style is afforded by the community is worth noting though. As for your stance, while I respect it, it's ignoring the actual dissonance between most content and its source material these days. It's entirely fair to say that there are overlaps that should be a proper discussion, but not with the brevity you approached them with here. That was the real meat of this sort of argument and you really just stopped short after bringing it up. There's a lot of precedent and cherry-picking on both sides that shouldn't be summarized so quickly, as it reaches beyond just abridging. I also feel your labeling it as "artistic retelling" isn't really something that fits into this sort of conversation. What it is legally considered is important, not what your take on what an abridged series in general is. There are, after all, all sorts of different types and styles to it. Some are very much just affectionate dubs when you get down to it, and some are absurdist parodies. Some remove themselves so far from the source material by editing that they hardly resemble the original in any form. Again, this is to get the point across that you're stopping the conversation short. This isn't a hard "you're wrong!". TL;DR: in my experience the community is stronger than it's ever been, and you shouldn't be so brief and dismissive when talking about so broad a topic. A proper conversation is in order.

they aren't as many abridged series as before but their quality is getting better. Just compare the most recent episode of yugioh abridged and the first. Not only they're develop in sound and editing but the storytelling and quality overall. Episode 81 of YGOTAS not depends on one lines and quip, silly voices as before and now even has some heartwarming and epic moment that someone said even surpassed the original.

personally I never saw what was so important about a bridge. I mean come on. First one guy makes a bridge and everybody uses it. they're like "ooh look a bridge, that's new. So like these other two guys make a bridge. And it's kinda like the first one. But people use it anyway because the other guy is like, "oh Their bridge is pretty cool check it out" And then these three are like , " oo we are going to make the best bridge ever, we're going to combine our talents and be like, "oh look at our bridge, it's totally amazing ooh"." Abridged shows are kind of complicated. Like clearly they don't fall under fair use but if they become popular enough they can bring back the hype for the original show. Like I'd never really had an interest in watching Dragon Ball Z until I found out how funny TFS was. I ended up watching all of the original Dragon Ball show, DBZ, and GT just so I could have all of the possible context. I swear to god about 30% of the time I watched it (well up that for GT) I fucking hated it because of how boring the filler was but when you sink hundreds of hours of your life into something you develop a strange affection for it even if you barely like it. Now I have a Krillin wallet so you know, stuff and things. This probably wouldn't work for liek SAO though since the original is so trash

The one thing that legitimises Abridged existence for fair use is the Dōjinshi market in Japan; Dōjinshi is a Japanese term used to describe self-published works like manga or novels, and it is a widely common occurrence in Japan to the point that it has ingrained itself into the industry. Most Dōjinshi, if not the overwhelming majority of Dōjinshi, are based off of existing properties. And many mangakas, anime studios and publishers in the industry allow unlicensed Dōjinshi to exist because they serve to bring in an outside audience. Why do they do this? You said it yourself, Anime doesn't really make a whole lot of money and the same is true for most media in Japan. It doesn't matter if its anime or manga.

When Abridging was a fad, most of it was abysmal. You indeed mentioned the highlights and those are all great, but I've seen bits of some horrible shit. Not only were most abridged series poorly rendered (the footage looks like pirated copies), edited, and acted, but the writing was some of the worst that I had ever seen. I'm all for preserving lost media, but I am almost glad that I never have to look at these wild misfires again.

Hey, I already had the entire Dragonball Z series on DVD, years before I'd even heard of Dragon Ball abridged! And I still have plenty of Dragon Ball related merchandise in my house, including shirts, and video games. So don't say I don't support the official release. I did the same for Yugioh too. Except the shirts, and the dvds, except for the yugioh movie, Bonds Beyond Time. Which sounds more like a coming together of James Bonds from numerous times than it does a yugioh movie, thinking about it like this.

I'd say there's a spectrum of what could be considered fair use as far as abridges go. Stuff like DBZA is high quality and transformative, but it can genuinely serve as a replacement to the original but when you get closer to MENT territory like none piece, stuff tends be a bit less polished and well produced but they're way more transformative and less likely to be a replacement since they're so bonkers and different from the source material

It being 'transformative' in this way isn't enough. It being 'high quality' isn't enough. How many TV shows do you see that are just other current running series with funny voiceovers? DBZA only continues to exist because TFS have been in touch with the likes of Toei and they have decided to overlook it. The fact DBZA or any other series continues is a courtesy, not a right. They could, if they so desired, nuke the whole series from space and there wouldn't be a damn thing TFS or their fans could do. I mean look what happened with the AoT Abridged TFS did, not only did they have to take it done, they couldn't even make mention of it until months after the fact because the studio was this [_] far from setting the dogs on them. It's their work and it's their decision on who does what with it. If any abridged series remains it's probably because the studio haven't noticed it yet. You are woefully misinformed about what is and isn't allowed. Fair use isn't "We can do this because we've worked really really hard on it". This isn't how things should be you understand, but it is how they are.

Ghost Stories the light novel series was and is quite popular, Ghost Stories the anime however flopped, and you need no other evidence of that than the fact that there hasn't been more of it made for tv. And while the linked thread does link to a few "sources" most of the discussion is based on pure speculation and accusations of a "narrative".

DBZ Abridged is better than the original. Change my mind. Edit: I grew up watching Dragon Ball Z. I find the Abridged version objectively better. It had a rocky start, sure, but with the newest episode that just came out, I stand firm that DBZA is just far more coherent and enjoyable to watch. It cuts down on the filler, addresses plotholes, addresses many issues I had with the source material, and keeps up a consistent level of quality. I have yet to find an abridged series that improves on its source material so perfectly (Barring SAO Abridged). Its a masterpiece of an abridged series and a shining example of how some fans can truly make something they love BETTER.

Something similar to the Ghost Stories situation happened in Latin America with the original Transformers dub. On the last episodes they just started changing dialogs, cracking jokes and even refer to the voice actors themselves in the show. If you know spanish it's hilarious. And it was real, it aired on tv at the time.

Truth be told I always saw terrified companies removing content from KZbin silly. I for one have lost countless dollars playing games I wouldn't have --or buying Blu-Rays I wouldn't have-- because of things like Abridged Series and Let's plays. More importantly, I think, I have SAVED tons of money from seeing how some of these companies reacted (specifically by throwing around take-downs around) and just deciding "You know...I don't think I want to support this company." I don't know, I guess it's just how I am as a customer. The more companies let us do with their product, within reason obviously, the better I view them. Obviously, I don't look at them poorly for not wanting people to make a personal profit off of their unedited work. I don't like things done out of genuine love for the series by fans of the series being taken down because "Theoretical Profit margins". For every customer you lose from something like a well done Abridged Series, you'll probably make it up with another fan. Unless your source material is super bad. But even then, if it's bad it's probably already fallen to obscurity and at that point any publicity is good publicity.

The DBZ Abridged series by 4Star is probably the biggest example of why it’s not fair use, but also the biggest example of why letting these things exist can be a good thing. The Abridged series is a massive part of the DBZ community and has gotten so huge that the DBS card game and even new DB shows and movies not only reference Abridged, but one of the voice actors has been the official voice of a character for multiple video games now.

DBZ Abridged made me realize how much I loved the show that I seemed to have dismissed in the back of my mind for most of my teenage-to-adult life, and it got me invested back into the franchise enough to get me hyped for the new movie coming this year. I think, as long as these companies keep making new products, Abridged series will only continue to serve as gateways to these series.

He watches it and loves it, and when I start comparing the source material to SAO-A he got confused, apparently he'd *somehow* overlooked the juggernaut that is SAO proper & assumed that SAO-A was the actual source material. I would say that DBZA can be considered an alternate source of the story when introducing it to friends who don't like binge watching through hundreds of episodes. But as of now, they've only done DBZ up to the Cell Saga, with rumours that they might end the show once they've finished that. With that in mind, that means that there's still a whole other half of DBZ that newcomers will have to watch the official release, as well as the original Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball GT, and Dragon Ball Super. Side note: I feel as though DBZA was actually indirectly beneficial to Toei Animation when they decided to make Dragon Ball Super. Because of the Abridged Series, the story as a whole stayed fresh in people's minds, making audiences ready for more Dragon Ball. Unfortunately, Toei constantly sees TeamFourStar as a threat, and would rather take them down instead of working with them.

Inconsistencies are what's consistent with the English language though... The plural form of *many* words do not make sense: Deer = deer; fish = fish; house = houses, but mouse = mice and louse = lice; die = dice; goose = geese, but moose = moose and mongoose = mongooses; passerby = passersby; scissors = scissors; bacterium = bacteria; buffalo = bison; child = children; corps = corps; criterion = criteria; foot = feet and tooth = teeth; ox = oxen; paparazzo = paparazzi; sheep = sheep... the list goes on and on... If anything series = series is very normal.

As someone who was into the abridged scene back in the day, a huge part of what made DBZ Abridged what it is was TeamFourstar, the crossover production move of the century. Any good analysis of DBZ Abridged would require a close reading of each producer's solo career. Would make a cool series, but I can't imagine going through all of Lanipator's old content for the project.

The reason people talk about a parody clause is this: "the purpose and character of your use" in fair use. What exactly does this mean? If a work is transformative, it's understood that the purpose and character are far different. This is why parodies get a free pass. And transforming a series into a comedy when it's not meant to be, while wildly changing characters and plot points? That's pretty transformative.

The people who only watch the abridged series never watched or would have watched the original shows anyway. At the same time, there are many people, including myself, who only watched the original shows because of the abridged series. There is more good then harm done by the abridged series. It's free advertising for the original content. With anime especially, the goal is to sell the merchandise anyway, and many people who watch abridged end up buying the merchandise.

Honestly the best thing any of these companies could do is tolerate all of the abridged series, let the market decide which one is best based by views and stuff and then legitimize the production. Any publicity is good publicity and all that. Like, I'd never ever care about SAO past what little I watched but the abridged series has me heavily invested in it. The trick to dealing with all this "unathorized" stuff that companies haven't seem to grasped is just to authorize or get it under your umbrella. Having more good content associated with your brand is a good thing.

I can't really understand viewing Abridged Series as "not parody" or as a viable replacement for the original series. As you observed, many of these series entirely rewrite characters or even storylines, so at least in those cases they cannot be replacements any more than something else in a similar genre could be a replacement; as for parody, idk, maybe parody has a strict legal definition I'm not aware of, but yeah if you asked any random person on the street whether YGO:TAS is parody, they'd say "yes" without a second thought. Ofc, we're both just speculating here, neither of us are lawyers, and that in itself is part of the problem - these laws that are supposedly meant to protect creators are too arcane to actually be understood by creators.
