We always used a glass that left a star impression to flatten our peanut butter cookies when I was a kid on the farm. Dipped the glass in sugar then pressed it into the cookie ball.

I realize this video is now 4 years old, but Im just now seeing this for the first time today! The fork crisscross marks on peanut butter cookies came into fashion in the 1930s. It was 1) to help the cookies bake evenly by pressing the balls into discs, 2) a fork was handy, and 3) popularized by printed recipes in the Schenectady Gazette and finally by Pillsbury.
