It doesn't. The SR-71's record is in a different category. There have already been faster speeds set by rocket powered manned aircraft, and unmanned aircraft. Key features of the SR-71's record are "jet propulsion" - "manned" - and "aircraft". That record is only broken if something meeting the same classification does so. This would only meet two of those, meaning no matter how fast it goes it will never break that record.

Not to mention all those Russian "hypersonic cruise missiles" that are being used routinely in the war in Ukraine.
@-108-7 ай бұрын
There is no such thing as a hypersonic cruise missile. CMs are low speed, low altitude, turbine jet powered land attack missiles (launched & boosted with rockets). That being said, RU's hypersonics are nowhere near unique. Hypersonic (>mach 5) missiles have been around since America's WAC Corporal in 1949 , and Russia's are nothing special. In fact, they are far less capable than any of their US made counterparts. Pretty much every air to air missile is hypersonic, and have been for decades.

This will not be commercially viable unless it can carry over 250 passengers, which is highly unlikely. The problem is found in two words: Gates, and Slots. If you can only carry 100 passengers, it will take take you four trips to carry the same number of one Airbus A350. What that means is that you will need for landing slots and four gate visits. The A350 needs one landing slot and one gate. Also, the hub and spoke model means that if you only being in 100 passengers, your slower planes can't be filled to the same capacity and make your arrival/departure window for the connecting flights. As an executive jet, a hypersonic might have some appear, but the commercial airliners can't really get enough use out of this kind of plane to want to buy it. It is gates and slots that will keep this plane from being successful in the commercial market unless they can get at least 200 seats and baggage, and that would be quite an engineering feat. The Lear Jet could go faster than the Cessna Citation, but even though the Citation was slower, it could land at far more airports and carry more people. When the Citation came out, critics said it just was not fast enough to compete with Lear, but in two years, Lear sales plummeted, and the Citation line became the most successful business jet line in history. Speed is not everything.

Am I wrong it's not making a plane go hypersonic, but more how to make an airframe survive the high air pressure and Temps. The main problems are stopping the leading edges from melting and getting air into the engine. Well air at hypersonic speeds becomes a plasma and a plasma can be deflected with electo-magnetics?? Just a thought!
@Neeboopsh8 ай бұрын
part of the problem of getting to hypersonic is that a turbofan wont get you there, but a ramjet can get up there, but wont run at subsonic, so you need to be able to transition from one mode to the other. the sr71's ducting design allowed mach3 but much over that you get into a static type engine, like a ramjet or scramjet. all the material science stuff and plasma stuff is icing on the cake ;) but getting to hypersonic from a rolling start on the ground, and back into a landing mean you need turbofan engines. missiles can get launched at speed, and just use a ramjet/scramjet, or you can get up to speed via a rocket motor. but a plane is gonna need a hybrid engine or multiple engine types to push past mach4 and need scramjets beyond even higher.

The X15 was air launched by B52, SR 71 and its cousin's were capable of taking off like regular planes. Furthermore X15 was a research craft, SR71 was used in military service.
@AllTradesGeorge8 ай бұрын
On top of all of those factors, the X15 wasn't a production aircraft. It was a technology demonstrator/research vehicle. The Quarterhorse is also a demonstrator, but it's not really the one that will be the record-breaker...it's just proving or disproving the viability of their engine technology under actual flight conditions. When they've learned enough from the Quarterhorse program, they'll move into an actual production program...that's when the record would be considered broken, when a manned production jet-powered craft makes an unassisted launch, breaks the record, and then lands. Everything up to that point is just a step towards an attempt at the record.
